  • imagine when he slid his tongue on the string his tongue was chopped off LOL

  • @jemmuel97 Haha, he did it with the tongue, so we'll think , " wow, look he is playing with his tongue ! " . But he is fake xD, he is holding the tremolo bar with his right hand.

  • lick the g-string om nom nom nom! :D

  • this guy is a lie !!! steve use the FERNANDES SUSTAINER

  • bull....that`s an Ibanez! Not FERNADES

  • he switched the harmonic mode on when he blew on the guitar so it looked like he did that not the sustainer.. haha good way to make people think you magic xD

  • @sniperpickle he also licked the E string when the note was held on the G. the whammy bar is what changed the pitch not his tonge but .it is the stage performance thats magic...no wait...thats just a fan blowing his hair around hahahaha

  • Yea, I used to have a Fernandez 7 string guitar w/sustainer,and Floyed rose type tremolo (but, got into some hard times, and had to pawn it, for a measly few bucks! It sounded great! and want to get a sustainer pickup kit for my current 6 string! When I had the Fernandez guitar, I loved the way you could change octaves by a push of the tone knob. (sounded like Satriani's guitar!)

  • in live at storia the trick looks more spontanius...

  • Steve you fucking troll xDD!

    Watch his right hand guys

  • sustainiac dude

  • Que hueon mas mula esa huea es cambiarle la perilla al fernandez susteiner ese armonico se hace solo

  • sustaninacs are better

  • imagine when he slid his tongue at the end his tongue fell off LOL

  • How many of you guys think some guitar noobs were at this concert and went home blowing on their guitar strings?

  • so damn annoying with that bar and his goofy ass face

  • Here is how to troll:

1.Put a capo on the highest fret possible

2.Put the sustainer on harmonic mode

3.Turn up the amp on the highest volume

4.Pick the high e string and let it sustain forever

    Problem neighbors?

  • @Proxima1310 rofl

  • @Proxima1310

  • @Proxima1310 challenge accepted

  • With a little help from the net, i managed to build my own sustainer from radio shack parts and some old single coils i had. I think it cost about $30 in parts including the magnet wire to make two. I've been meaning to put up a "how to" step by step vid and honestly, they are almost two easy to make that paying $250 for one is unacceptable.

  • @zer0dahero You should totally post that video! \m/

  • @facespaz sorry to take so long to reply to you. I've actually been meaning to put the step by step process on Instuctables(dot)com but since I'm military, I have very little time to goof off and do a how to vid or an instuctable. Maybe some one else has put up a step by step intructable, I can't be the only guy who has made their own out of radio shack parts for $20.

  • @zer0dahero No problem, as you can see I also rarely check the email connected to my youtube account! thanks anyways man

  • @zer0dahero How many hours did it take you to make it?

  • @TonyAab About an hour of soldering the LM386 op amp, 5v regulator and a few pc board terminals, all from radioshak. I also used a 220uf cap just for the hell of it. Then, a couple of hours putting together the sustainer driver out of a puck up bobbing and 32 gauge magnet wire. I got the initial idea from a guy on youtube to make a 9v batt powered mini amp out of an LM386 and there are a few vids here on how to make the "sustainer driver"Its all so simple, its dumb (in a good way) not not make.

  • @zer0dahero Cool, thanks. I don't get why they are not more common, considering how useful they are!. I'd love to make one one day. If it took me as long to make as working my day job until I could afford one, it might be worth me buying one (on my wages it doesn't ;P) but even then It would be more enjoyable to make one than to work. Thanks for the tips :)

  • he also used a hamonizer right?

  • @TasteForDisaster I think that the sustainer comes with a harmonizer mode.

  • amazing,,, by th way what song this is?????

  • No se supone que Steve solo usa pastillas DiMarzio?!?! =S

  • HE'S CHEEEATING YOU CHEATER

  • @38decembers that is so weird she makes the same sounds for me, too.

    (set yourself up for it)

  • SLIP OF THE TONGUE ;)

  • so gay

  • pure bullshit

  • Does fernandes sustainer work on HSS strat ?

  • did he blow the pickups? and then licked it?

  • @The99genki he made the sound by switching a switch that creates a harmonic of the note currently playing when he blowed it. He then used the tremolo to raise the pitch when he licked it.

  • @LehmannDaHero oh, i see. hahaha.. damn he tricked me when he licked the strings.

  • I´ve just seen the same advertisment but with kerry king instead of steve vai, and it was like... was kerry really playing the guitar or trying to break it?

  • I put the Sustainer on my Strat and it is incredible. I play a lot of Santana so it works like a charm. You can get infinate sustain on any note on any string anywhere on the neck at any volume! It is the coolest thing I have ever used.

  • Lol the old tongue trick...notice his hand on the trem bar ;)

  • @zWhu5tiFFIE not to mention when he breathes on the guitar he switches the sustainer unit to harmonic mode.

  • sustainer fernandes 101 o 401????

    please answer me!!!

  • @snivellingjasonex - 401 :)

  • @snivellingjasonex i have the 401 and am quite happy with it. i read ppl complaining about the way the 101 sucks tone out of the bridge pickup as a result of the kit's circutry so i went with the 401 kit and replaced both pickups. I have no real complaints with it. having said that, i've never actually owned the 101.

  • sustainer fernandes 101 o 401????

    please answer me!!!

  • trey anastasio has so much control over his sustain and feedback its an art, this fernandes thing is pretty cool, but really being able to hold back and control feedback on a hollowbody guitar; i find to be more tasteful and it just seems cooler

  • HAHA when he blows in it, thats fake he's just activating the susbstainer there, and using the trem when showing his tongue XD

Still, the best guitar player i've ever seen for technical skill and showmanship

  • on witch show did he make that solo

  • he pressing the floyd rose when he does the thing with his tongue. I don't think he's actually doing that with his tongue. correct me if i'm wrong though

  • Comment removed

  • @guitarher3 certanily not a sustainiac, 100% Fernandes Sustainer =)

  • @guitarro7 Yup- this link IS on from website :)

  • anyone know how the switches come through the finish and all. and does vai use the dimarzios still or the fernandes pickup.

  • sys much better

  • it looks like he is just using his evo pickup. does this come with his signature white JEM?

  • Homo says what ?

  • lol you all know that you like when he shows off dont lie

  • @MrRockbot of course we love when he shos off ...not when hes trying to lie to us thinking that we are stupid and dont know that we know how to use the fernandez sustainer

  • what a jerk!! sucks when a talented musician trys to lie to his fans...so disappointed. all he does is switch sustainer into harmonic mode

  • @db35m wow. just wow.

  • @db35m WHAT!? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? Wow...I mean I totally thought his breath and tongue had mystical guitar playing and pitch altering abilities. Thank god you came along to enlighten us all Captin Obvious...I pray that you may never infect this world with your seed. So that your offspring will never have the chance to realize what a tard fart you are. And when exactly did Vai come up to tell you he can play the guitar with his breath and tongue...just trying to figure out how he lied to you?

  • @MrShredtilldead ....uhm...yeah obvious to you an me that know what a sustainer does...you moron ....its not that he came up and lied to me you asshole...just look at the video and see how hes trying to sell that hes changing the pitch of the sound by blowing on it and using his tounge.. i bet that if you did not know what a sustainer was youd be like "wow how did he do that.. ill suck his kock to know how he did that"...there are other people that are gullible and aren't music tech saby..

  • why he doesnt blow my dick????? why i mean why?? he could...

  • So that's how he does that I've been blowing on my guitar for a month.

  • Este tipo es mi dios!!!!! IDOLOOOOOO

  • lol youre lying to me, dat is not for the love of god

  • Basically you can play with one hand if you have that thing installed, right?

  • How does it get that Harmonics, that it goes so high without picking the string???

    At 0:06

  • @318825768 notice when he pretends to blow on the string and use his tongue to perform harmonics, he switches the small switch on the guitar. it changes the magnetic waveform to cause the string to vibrate in harmonic....waveform isn't the right word for it, i know.

  • @koniferus420 thanks :)

  • @koniferus420 He also rips on the wank bar for the upward bend.

  • @LeviMan2001 When I blow my friend, uh my guitar, he, I mean it makes those sounds too/

  • @318825768 what he is doing is that his guitar has a fernandez sustainer..watch his finger and he switches the sustainer into harmonic mode...what a jerk!! sucks when a talented musician trys to lie to his fans...so disappointed

  • @318825768 he flicks a switch ;-) How impressive, isn't it?

  • lol does the crowd know that none of that is possible without the sustainer?

  • Great guitar player although his tongue or blowing doesn't do anything. He just flicks the switch. Watch his thump. It's easy to know if you have an FKS 401. Great showman!!!

  • this reminds me of paul gilbert playing sweeps with his ass

  • Can you get pedals to do this. i know there are pedals with sustain like electro harmonix and boss. But can they do that high pitch noise. I havent seen any on youtube do it... if you have a pedal that can upload a video please thnx :)

  • @RockGuitarist09 its not a pedal man its the sustainer system by fernandes( look it up)i bet every one is like whoa how did he do that with his tounge.... he flips the sustainer switch to harmonics and then to get it to slide pushes the wammy bar down....... its cool and all but come on steve you dont need gimmicky crap like that when it has nothing to do with the skill and has no real effect on the sound your guitar makes( guitar magician but magic is still just an illusion

  • @strangehero420 i knew it was a pickup. Im just not prepared to buy a pickup to put in my guitar just for sustain. I'm just curious if any pedals can make the same noise

  • Does the Sustainer driver/pickup function as a "pickup"? In other words, this won't turn my TWO pickup guitar into a ONE pickup guitar with endless sustain, will it? I like to occassionally use the neck pickup for solos and don't want to lose that choice if I get a Sustainer.

  • @Ninjaro It does function as a pickup, you can actually set up it's internal volume from a mini-pot in sustainer circuit board, it can be loud yet very quiet, just like an active pickup.

  • @guitarro7 - Excellent. That makes my decision for me. Will be purchasing and installing in my Ibanez RG2EX1

  • Steve vai is kickass.

  • See his music isn't tasteless!

  • @Yowzow LOL

  • how do you do that??

  • Fernandez 401 sustainer kit.

  • FLOOOOOOOOO

  • How did he do the tounge thing? is it because it keeps vibrating the string which allows him to use his tongue like his finger

  • lol, the tounge doesnt do shit. it's the sustainer. he turns the switch to harmonic mode when he touches his tounge to the string, it's all a trick.

  • @stevsticks I believe he uses the Whammy pedal to change the pitch - you can see him shift his body weight a little as if he's stepping on a pedal just before the "tongue". the tongue is just for show, as is the 'blow', which is just a switch flip as others have noted. All that said, it's damn entertaining ;-)

  • @intrsoul it is tw o switch flips ( three way) one is to sustain and one is to bring out the pinch harmonics in the sustain.... teh pitch shift is him hitting his wammy bar slightly ( look at it again and wou will see it , just gotta know what to look for

  • cheeky

  • LOL man so awesome haha.

  • Sound engineering!

  • Does Slash use one of those too?

    Like in Estranged?

  • matt bellamy does way more things with his sustainer kit !

  • @Mkamalid Though i am on your side here, there's no reason to bash Steve for doing comparatively little.

    M

  • there is a switch on the guitar that allows the sustainer to add those harmonics, and the increase in pitch is cause of his tremolo. He is doing this to entertain, not to show off(well, maybe a little...)

  • lol true. The tongue shit was jus his whammy bar

  • @23Mizchief So paul gilbert style!

  • @edoardomorellimusic Jeez god forbid an entertainer does something to entertain the audience, its not like its his job or anything.

  • you are right, he is an entertainer

  • @edoardomorellimusic o yes and i hate all magicianst to make me belive that i can cut sombody in 2 fuck men its a freaking show!

  • why is this spam

  • lmao

  • Do you have to use the Fernandes pickups to use the sustainer? I also don't have space for the middle pickup. Will this be a problem? I have an Ibanez RGT42MDX.

  • you don't need to use the fernandes bridge pickup, just the Sustainer driver/pickup in the neck. And you don't need a middle pickup :)

  • if u watch closely you can see he flicks the switch

  • I wouldn't do the tongue thingy if it were plugged in with a cable....LOL.

Nothing wrong with the sustainer....I made my first working model of one in 1982 because I had just bought a headphone amp and wanted the guitar to behave as if it were in front of a cranked 4x12 cab.

  • At least he's got the chops to get away with this sort of "extravagancies"...plus he's a cool dude.

  • how the fuck can that thing with the tongue happen?what do u need to ge those sounds?

  • Just watch his right hand. He is fooling everyone:D Very good magic trick though

  • i c! he's changing the pitch with the bar. i get it now. cuz i have a sustainer and i tried it too. haha. good eyes

  • watch him flick the switch as he touches his tongue to the string

  • He doesnt place the tongue on the string, he just pulls the vibrato.

At 0:31 look how he presses the vibrato forcing the sound to get a "sharper".

  • so i read about every comment and cant believe NO ONE brought this up. they're all busy arguing about the damn sustainer.

well, there's obviously more to this song and i was wondering if anyone knows what performance or song this is from? cant find ANYTHING like this.

    thanks.

  • google 'Vai G3 Live Concert' according to itunes :P

  • the iTunes things don't matter. they are random. sometimes they say for the love of god, sometmes other things. they are just ads....

  • "My name is Steve Vai, and I can wank the guitar better than anyone."

  • Oh you are a wanker Vai ! ^^

  • I pity his wife.. He loves his guitar more than his wife...hahah!! Cool sustainer though..

  • why does he lick the string?

  • just for show! the actual thing happening is he flicking switches to control the sustainer! the guitar uses an electromagnet that replaces the neck pickup and makes the strings vibrate, to make "feedback" audible through the bridge pickup.

  • @infectionsman thats the first thing i noticed lol

  • @infectionsman This is true.

  • he blows on the strings

  • cuz hes a pimp

  • He can lick it because he is God on the guitar.

  • He doesn't. It serves no purpose, it's just showmanship. He is holding the whammy bar down as he slides his tongue up the low E string, which he isn't playing so... yah it serves no purpose lol

  • Fantastic bit of kit! Been after something like this for years. Nice playing.

  • So that's how he does it

  • for all the people who don't know what this is it's a fernandes sustainer read the videos name? it's a pickup that "sustains" notes and also has harmonic mode which brings out the harmonics as you hold a note so steve flips the switch when he blows on the guitar for show.

  • after a while when you have a sustainer it just will normally he blows on the guitar just for show

  • im pretty sure it may be the Digitech whammy, that or feedback, doing that is probably just to look cool

  • If you watch his thumb when he blows on the strings, you'll notice that he flips a switch. There are two switches that control the Sustainer - on/off and fundamental/2nd overtone. He hits the overtone switch, which makes the Sustainer sustain the string at the second overtone, which is an octave above the fifth.

  • He's pressing down on the tremolo.

  • toujours plein de cinéma ce mec...

  • he's using a sustainer kit from fernandes, there's no trick, just pure magnetic force induced by the kit. act the same as an ebow

  • when he goes to harmonic he presses on a button on his guitar stil so fucking great srr for bad english

  • That's whack, I'm gonna have to get a sustainer now.

  • Check out my videos on putting the sustainer in!! You can see what you have to go through. Its not an easy job by no means. And if you have someone do it is alot! Figure $250 for FSK-401 prewired which is the way I went and the easiest plust has mix mode which is awsome. Then about another $300 to have someone put in if you dont do it yourself.

Check out my videos. its a bitch!!!!!!!!

  • that tongue thing was the best and least stupid show-off I've seen ever since Hendrix played a solo with his teeth!:))

  • The Tongue thing is all show!! It does nothing Ive tried it.

  • I guess it acts as a harmonic....

  • No It acts as you looking like a total MORON! Because it doesnt work.

It only works for MR. STEVE SIRO VAI

    Its just for show man.

You can do it with a Pitch Pedal.

  • ok..... just sayin:))

  • It works. Same basic idea as taking your whammy bar and sliding it along a string, except that the sustainer is needed to overcome the extra friction loss of using your tongue instead.

It doesn't work without a sustainer.

  • Do you have a sustainer? Do you even own a guitar? By the looks of your channel you dont.

I have one. Believe me when I tell you

It does NOT work!!! Ive tried PLENTY of times and looked like a complete FOOL

doing it!!When your tounge hits the string it stops its from vibrating.

  • its fake he pull on the vibrato with is thumb

  • Ya I think he is switching to the 5th harmonic mode then using his Whammy Pedal. Which is fine. Hay what ever works works. Its a little bit of trickery.

That's why I call Steve the

MUSICIAN MAGICIAN. I love the guy. He bought his first guitar at the same place I bought mine!!! Matthew Music in Roosevelt Field Mall. I live 2 towns from his home town. GOD I feel so special !!!!!!!! NOT.

  • No your right hes using the bar. I still love him.

  • he maybe a poser but hes a fucking legend

  • on 0:06 he blowed to the strings :D:D

actualy his left thumb was on a controller and it created feedback

nice trick but I saw it :D (H)

and lickin' thing also had tremolo arm usage

  • IMO Vai is such a poser! Too bad because he's a talented guitarist.......

  • many ppl can see it that way...

Vai and many others are not posers... they found other ways to enrich their performance on stage. Some people may find it funny or just a visual addition. Dont you make any faces or moves when you re trying to express yourself ? Problem with on stage is.. that you are talking alone and thats why it may seem weird.

  • Explain please, in what way he is a poser. You can't, can you?

  • Hehe... he IS a poser. He openly admits it in a guitarworld gear tour video. His favourite gear is... get this... THE FAN... he's one hilarious dude. Why can't a legitimately good musician be a good showman as well? I don't see anything wrong with that.

  • I think we were talking about two different posers i guess. What Steve ISN'T, is somebody who pretends to be something they aren't. He is, however, a great showman and has excellent stage presence.

  • Ah that poser. He can't be a poser... because he's accomplished too much. That makes him totally legit.
