i dont think the scoring was causing the noise but yes it could be piston slap like i said in my last post slide the wrist pin and the piston back on the top of the rod and pull up and down to check for slop
side to play movement is normal they all do that, if there is no up and down movement your rod is good,it possible that a crank bearing is bad,put the piston on the rod and see if it has a lot of up and down movement it should have very little up and down movement,is the top of the rod smooth or grooved up were the wrist pin goes?i still think he got the motor really hot and stretched the cam chain,did the cam journal get scored to?

Yeah I'll take a look at that tomorrow. I know the wrist pin was snug in the piston. I forget about the part that rides in the rod
