  • Im gonna be real here the game was good but the ANIME was fucking awsome i mean the anime touched on more then the game did they didnt just kill 1 or 2 main character off the killed alot of them off and they did it in a more grim way but while all this was going on it was still a funny anime and it kept u watching i belive if u watch the anime and u didnt play the game first u wouldnt like the game because of what the anime added was alot better then the game.

  • @n543576 Funny. I played the game first, and didn't like the anime too much... "To each his own," dude.

  • @m4a1fox Really so tell me how was the game better?

  • @n543576 Well, for starters "kill more characters" does not equate to "better story". Isara's death was meaningful because A. you didn't see it coming and B. it was the last person you expected to see die. Because of those two things, it had a hell of a punch.

Killing characters left and right, just like actual deaths in war, desensitizes the audience to the loss. When your audience starts to not care when a character dies, you're doing something wrong.

  • @CheapytheHutt well for starters i DID actually care about the people who died because some of them were in my starter attack squad so lets get that out of the way and no i didnt see isar's death coming in the game or the anime so it was still a legit surprise but all the other squads death were meaningful actually for example when favio entire squad was killed THAT was fucking messed up lol and his reaction was like how a real leader would react....except the whole frendly fire..

  • This, was the first PS3 game I ever bought :) Still have it almost 3 years later!

  • @ZebraHeadFanSDG Saaaaaaame, it's a shame it didn't sell too well---one of the best games for the PS3 to this day!

  • sadly SEGA kille this ins less than 3 years by releasing the sequels on PSP

  • @ChicoAzteca Well, to be fair, VC2 wasn't bad... it was just a bit lackluster. And as for VC3, it's only out in Japan ATM, so how the fuck would you know how good it is, anyway?

  • @ChicoAzteca the series is nowhere near dead...Just because a game is on the PSP, does not automatically make it suck; just look at God of War and Metal Gear Solid, no one minded that they were on the PSP.

  • This is musical dissonance almost on par with 3rd Impact in End of Eva...

  • Kinda reminds me of the opening for band of brothers in a wierd way

  • sega actually made a good game in the beginning years of the ps3!? man i guess i should have trusted them after the atrocity that sonic 06 was

  • @IFkOrangel God........ One more idiot than the other, read my post below... and, IT IS developed by Sega you retard, SEGA have a lot of internal studios and this people also worked on titles like shinobi, skies of arcadia, dynamite deka, phantasy star, sakura taisen, etc, i cant believe that post is still one of the best commentary, you really are all IDIOTS

  • I shiver whenever I think back to how overwhelmingly beautiful this game was.

  • the opening video,

reminds me of the awesome old rpgs i love,

    it also reminds me of

Radiata Stories, which was just an awesome epic game,

  • This game was truly a masterpiece.

  • This opening is much better than japanese one.

  • @Basticulis Agreed. It really suits the themes of the story.

  • this game already 2 years?! i just found it and thot its new.. shame on me

  • SEGA seems to be a miss or hit company, sort of like the modern Square Enix, even if SE is more miss than hit these days.

  • @WoWFanX SEGA seems to be great in their RPG department, and good in the 3rd Person Shooter department, most of their games don't really appeal to me...

  • Amazing how they spoil the whole damn game in the opening.

  • @JosedGeminis what did they spoil here, just by looking at the boxart for the game you know Selvaria is a Valkyria, they don't spoil anything here :/

  • Tears well up in my eyes whenever I hear even this :'(

  • @Felipe058 Same here, man. The start of the music, and then the very end where they almost touch...perfect opening to a mind-blowing game. Why can't all games be this amazing?

  • Fucking amazing game. Absolutely one of the most memerable games i have ever played, that says something because i grew up with fallout one and baldur's gate.

This intro reminds me of 'Band of brothers' intro :)

  • dam i would love to get 100% trophies for this, so common sega give us a trophy pack

  • Will they ever stop making games about war? I mean, I really like them, but this will eventually get old. It's time for them to make a game that's NOT puzzles, NOT war, NOT medieval, etc. How about a sci-fi sims or life simulator? My point is, eventually we'll get tired of all these war games.

  • @EnteruserIDhere1 this one actually added its own style and grace to it.

  • @EnteruserIDhere1 the prob is this war game isn't bloody enough.

  • @sara1412 Yeah, but I mean..When they add blood to games like this or cartoon-real games like modern warfare, it becomes completely overdone; Take fallout 3 for example. Yeah, we like the gore. Yeah, it's overdone and gets old.

  • @EnteruserIDhere1 Umm ...

Sci-fi = Star Ocean series, Xenosaga Series, just to name a few

Life simulators = lol hello?! Sims series XD

  • @GrandAngel8000 Hello? Knock knock. I said SCI-FI LIFE SIMULATORS, not sci-fis and life simulators

  • @EnteruserIDhere1 Hello? Knock knock. You said "OR life simulators". The Sims and many other games already fit that critieria. I don't understand how "sci-fi life simulation" would be much different than the regular, other than that instead of houses it would be space ships or something.

Then your "point" doesn't fit too well either. I won't get tired of war games if they are on par or better with this game. There's still a vast majority of video games out there ... so ya. Imagination.

  • I haven't had this game long and when this opening came up, immediately I knew that this game was going to be moving just by the music. I'm loving it so far, it's beautiful.

  • at 0:37 seconds it sounds alot like LOTR grey havens

  • The game almost feels like a fantasy version of Band of Brothers, considering that it's something of a retelling of WW2 to begin with.

  • This is much better than the Japanese opening music.

  • I still kinda find it hard to believe SEGA made this. Way better than Sonic, which I never really liked and has gone completely downhill lately lol. Hang in their SEGA.

  • @GamerWorlock

If you like this, SEGA also published another game 'Resonance of fate' which is also pretty awesome from what i've heard. I don't think its made by SEGAWOW though...

In other news, Valkyria chronicles 2 is coming ;o

  • @OtaCat I'll look into that, and I already know about Valkyria Chronicles 2 :D. I just hope it lives up to the name.

  • @GamerWorlock To be fair, the internal team that made this game and Skies of Arcadia and Sakura Wars are in a WHOLE ANOTHER LEAGUE than the slops who works at Team Sonic and other wishy-washy-quality Sega development teams.

The Overworks/WOW entertainment team also created the legendary Phantasy Star series as well. It speaks volumes for the quality and legacy of that development team.

I get kinda pissy if people correlate the terribad Sega management to Overworks/WOW.

  • @GamerWorlock

Hard to believe? Thats because theres a lot of idiots like you that just play mainstream games.

Try Panzer dragoon Orta, Skies of arcadia, Sakura Taisen, Virtual ON, Gun Valkyrie, Phantasy star, Jet Set redio, SC5, REZ, OMega factor

I love Sonic but I hate when people talk about Sega like sonic was their only game, god.

BTW, if you think Sonic is going downhill, play Secret rings, Sonic rush, Unleashed, Sonic colours, you ignorant retard, you just repeat what other people say

  • @Metashock sega's made some nice games, but none of them have been triple aaa releases like the mainstream games you hate so much. The last time Sega was even close? Uh... Soul Calibur 1?

  • @DShadow911 SC1? Wasn't that Namco?

  • @Metashock u mad

  • awesome game and awesome intro.

  • what is this song called? is it on the OST?

  • @baconboy127

I was kinda hoping someone could answer this, but I still haven't found out where to find this music.

  • @egretdingo actually it's called 'A Love Passed on (Orchestral Version)' it's on the soundtrack.

  • @theAJview

    Thanks!

  • @baconboy127

its called "succeeded wish" and yes it is on the OST

  • Comment removed

  • i love how alicia says "hmmm" after she killed someone. ^^

  • *sigh* its like im crying inside wen i hear this song, i mean these emotions im feeling just playing this game r just, wow. thank you sega

  • I know how you feel. It was such a good game that you felt what the characters meant. Like poor Isara.

  • i love this game!!! i got it 4 x-mas 2. this is a game worth playing!!!!

  • True that!

  • first time loading up the game, I knew it was good from the op video, no over the top music or "viva violence!" and it still made me feel like I was playing a old school game (oldschool meaning just great!)

  • @desertgod kinda sad this stupid view people take against the new generation while loving what is mostly nostalgia based mediocrity. While VC is a superb game there are far more great games this generation than ever before. And not just great action, but amzing story/writing games

  • Definitely one of the best written games for story, and probably THE best written for character development. I mean, it's not like other games where you only hear about the main 2 or 3 characters in any amount of detail. In this, everyone has something they're comming from and going to.

  • Anyone got a name for the song? It's beautiful.

  • i think this is a stupid question but is the game based off the anime or is the anime based off the game?

  • Anime is based off the game.

  • I think both America and Japan kick so much ass. Europe too (though I know nothing of the region but I think its cool). Anyone love Valkyria Chronicles and cannot wait for the sequel respond to the comment.

  • America: who gives a shit (makes a carefree face)

Britain: What ever chaps (smooth Operator 007 face)

Japan: BANZAI!! (do I really need to say it?)

the sequel will have BFS soldiers, (Big Fucking Sword) it now interests my sword fetish ha!

VC 1 had a description for every weapon, I wonder how they'll explain why the soldiers bring anti cavalry swords in war (giants swords other then claymores do exist, they were made to cleave through a man and his horse in one go.... no kill like overkill XD)

  • You mean a Zweilhander?

  • i meant generally any extremely large blade, Zweilhanders are cool, but the ones I meant are GOD DAHM big, the ones i saw in the demo were a "unique" size (think Clouds's sword, a claymore. selveria's lance replaced with a equally large sword :D)

  • A Zweilhander is the largest type of sword. Claymores are based on their shape rather than their size, as most claymores are no bigger than a Katana. Cloud's Buster Sword is more of an enormous broadsword. But swords those sizes never really existed for battle.

I think in terms of the weapons that can kill houses in a swipe, I think you may be thinking of axes, as there are certain axes that can do that.

Also, I'd say Selvaria's weapon is more of a Lancer than anything.

  • *horses, no hand weapon could destroy a house. :P

  • ah my bad, I must've saw a bad example, I did a quick run on google on what that blade was, showed me a "fancy" sword, not big or small, just common length and a fancy hand guard.... anyway yeah, It looks like psp VC now has units sporting rather large blades into battle, wonder how VC's weapon description will explain bringing those into battle lol

can we both agree THAT is pretty awesome? lol

  • I never knew was an anime series. The game is incredible. I love the graphics. they're great. and the story line is awesome. i think the music is great as well.

  • The anime series is a really bad spinoff of this game.

    i rather not watch it

  • the game was made after anime not before it so its the which is the spinoff.

  • The game was released in 2008 in Japan. The anime did not premiere until 2009.

  • The Game Was Released in April 24, 2008, The Spinoff Anime released April 4, 2009, Almost a full year after the game

  • The anime is great, if you actually cared to watch it. The story is pretty identical to the game too, just a few small changes. :)

  • I watched the first episode and they completely changed it.

instead of Alica letting The guy go because of is, He gets locked up in a room by her while the battle is going on

  • It's a small difference, in both the anime and the game she thinks he is a spy at first, it's just a different reaction which amounts to the same situation by the end of the episode.. It happens a few times throughout the anime, but the plot is virtually the same.

  • Oh ok.

I still prefer the game to be honest though.

Interaction is always better than watching something in my opinion

  • Perhaps the greatest strategy game ever made, in fact one of my favorite games of all time. I really want this game, oh and its sequel coming out for PSP (need PSP). I just really want to have this game.

  • Love it !!! Hahah!! So Awesome!!

  • the bast game on ps3

  • I agree. Second is Metal Gear Solid 4.

  • for noobs vallend karkiet chronometer

  • The federation is western and central Europe, not America.

  • because americans ruin everything that includes movies and games and war. if the americans ever got there hands on the anime market it would be the death of true anime because we would only be gettin shit anime

  • I agree. American RPGs have destroyed the market for JRPGs. IN fact stuff like Fallout 3 (while being a really good game) in my eyes is not an RPG. Neither is Mass Effect.

  • An RPG is a Role Playing Game. Fallout 3 and Mass Effect (while I haven't had the chance to play either of them, even though I have the games) are RPGs because you have your own role in the game, where you play as your own unique character and advance in the game at your own pace. Whatever the fuck you think an RPG is, it ain't the real thing.

  • I am not saying these are not RPGs, there is no doubt in my mind that they are. But to me JRPGs have always been the best RPGs, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect just look more like shooters, however they are still RPGs.

  • I personally don't give a flying shit about anime. It only consists of a whole bunch of teenagers with 3 meter long strands of floating hair and titanic swords doing pointless shit. And FYI, America kicks ass, because we keep a fucking grip on reality.

  • Well a lot of people in Japan have a grip on reality. But both America and Japan kick ass... because without Japan we would not have video games in the US after the Video Game Crash of 1983.

  • Then whats with all this anime bullshit about 5 meter long swords that teenaged boys with crazy long hair and twigs for arms can swing around with ease?

  • well that is their form of cartoons as I see it. I like anime (please do not bash me) but I have a big grip on reality. It is for people who enjoy it.

  • I'm not going to bash anyone, but my opinion is that anime is a bunch of pointless bullshit that makes absolutely no fucking sense in the long run. That's also why I never go to that bloody "Otakuthon" convention whenever it arrives in my home down, unless I get dragged over there against my will... But like I said, that's just my opinion.

  • what the hell is Otakuthon... oh well sounds stupid... but the fact that you do not like anime is not irrelevant to how amazing this game is. I highly recommend it. Even if you do not like anime, I recommend this.

  • Do a search for : Zero punctuation Valkyria Chronicles. Believe me, this guys tells the truth...

  • otokan os an anime convention apairently thius guy lives in the same city as me

BUT THE THING COST 60$ per person

  • what the hell is Otakuthon... sounds stupid... but anyway the fact that you do not like anime, does not mean this is a bad game. You should check it out. It is amazing. Even if you dont like anime.

  • i swear i find it childish when people remark and have disrespect on something just by cover, and then after they experience it they become total dick riders for the game, fucking hypocrites.

  • what game station is this

  • playstation 3

  • do u where can I find this music?

I have the OST but didn't have this version

one is the vocal, one is the piano

I want this version, at the opening

  • I finished the game weeks ago...

have to say never heard of it before, neither this nor the anime, but the game is really fun, much better than the anime...

  • 0:40 THAT BATTLESHIP IS CRAZY

  • What music is that from. Is it really in the game? Great music.

  • Yup, it's in the game.

  • @1:54

i thought that was selvaria but its alicia (she has those hair accessories). i know what this implies; no one tell me cuz im still on chapter 7 :P

  • yeah the fact this was in here was a bit of a slap in the face wasnt it?

  • some sarcasim... :P

  • I just watched this video with Explosions in the Sky 'Have You Passed Through This Night's first two minutes playing in the background. It didn't fit perfectly, but it was awsome!

  • Best game I've played this console generation so far. It certainly beats out most of the blockbuster games. I know some of you might dislike the idea of the sequel coming out for psp, but try to get it regardless. It will be awesome. If things turn out good, we might see a 3rd entry back on the PS3.

  • I just... Love this game. I love the characters, I love the style, I love the story and it's WWII/Winter War vibes.

    Brilliant.

  • Don't forget the wonderful canvas engine :) One of a kind. Ever played Skies of Arcadia?

  • Wow, extra points for mentioning the Winter War. I've never thought of that, but the idea of a small country managing to hold its own against another country with an army four times its own has got to be the overarching influence for Valkyria Chronicles. Thanks for giving me a lot of food for thought.

  • Yeah. And the idea of a closely knit, even family-like militia squad is like directly from Unknown Soldier (a classic finnish movie about Winter War). Although it's very very unlikely that the devs woud've seen it. :D

  • Yeah...although the theme of a closely-knit squad in the midst of war is an archetype (universal theme) in literature and movies.

As for what the devs have seen...I've been doing research on the historical inspirations of Valkyria Chronicles, and there are some big surprises proving that it has much more historical symbolism than we think it does.

  • Actually, I meant that like the korpijääkäri-unit seen in Unknown Soldier, Squad 7 takes it easy, jests and doesn't stay all serious even in midst of war.

  • Ah. I haven't seen Unknown Soldier, so I wouldn't know about that. Perhaps I'll search around for an English dub.

  • def one of my favorite game openings ever. the ending credits and the cutscene after that was awesome as well.

    -kwonstein

  • I wouldn't consider VC2 to be this sequel for THIS game. Just another game in the same universe.

Fear not, Sega are clearly planning to gather a large fanbase and turn VC into a franchise (e.g. figures, art books, a price cut of the game, anime) to garner support for... well, must be for new VC games. They wouldn't do all that just to help boost sales of a little PSP game.

  • I always get goosebumps at the start when the picture is drawn and goes into motion. I seriously cannot comprehend how Sega didn't advertise this at all and proudly advertise games like Sega Superstar Tennis. Its beyond me. For anyone considering buying this game you really won't regret it. All it requires is a bit of patience. The reward is well worth it.

  • Well most Americans and western gamers would prefer this OP and most Japanese gamers would prefer their OP because they change the song to target whichever market they are aiming at. If you don't know Japanese or their taste in music then the OP would do little to effect you and get you motivated for the game. I'm not saying you need to know Japanese to like its OP but it does make a difference.

  • The music gives is a ww2 movie atmosphere.

  • I just completed the game. I can tell you, it is fantastic.

There is a little bit of something for everybody.

Just open up your hearts and mind and you will love this game...

I am not into anime nor rpgs yet this game was so beautifully made that it tops as my favourite game so far above Uncharted and Infamous. =)

  • its like an rpg mixed with advanced wars

  • Getting this game in the mail tomarrow, i can't wait.

  • the japanese OP is more suitable as this game was more towards being an anime...

and if you had watched the anime you would understand why i say the japanese OP was more suitable... The story for valkyria chronicle is focused on the main characters alicia and welkin... it is not really intended for the war... but then this opening is yet again not suitable for those type of story...

  • Prefer japanese OP...

the Japanese OP looks more suitable as the American OP is a little dull...

whatever bout this... i'm just saying my view...

  • I have to disagree with you. The US opening gives it a more of a Band of Brothers feel, which I feel complements the WWII feel better.

I appreciate you putting your view out. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and how you DIDN'T say: "The Japanese version is better because..." makes me respect your opinion very much.

  • i always thought PS3 owners were praising this game because it was the only decent looking rpg on the system. i'm happy to say that i was wrong. this game is UBER PWNAGE. that is all.

  • This is a great game. It's a pleasure to play, in my opinion.

  • This game intro is one of the most touching i have ever seen. I hope they do a sequal.

  • The game is quite good, and I hear there will be an expansion released sometime this year.

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but the way the story unfolds during gameplay and the characters attitudes in combat gives me the feeling that they are somewhat removed from actual combat. There are certain times when I can't figure out if they are having an actual shooting war, or just a really intense game of AirSoft.

...or maybe I should just shutup and enjoy the game.

  • i love this thank you so much

  • This is far superior to the Japanese opening; I feel connected to the characters every time I see this. When those photos are strewn across the screen I remember the tapestry of memories these song invoked...it's beautiful.

  • Looks pretty damn amazing. Maybe I should buy it sometime. But can you change the dialogue in the game to japanese? I'm obsessed with original voices in everything :x

  • Yes this have Japanese dub with English subtitle.

  • you obviously never played the game, otherwise you would've known that the majority of the characters are well over 18. the main character, welken, is 22. but hey, i can't blame that someone who can't see past stereotypes lack any sort of intelligence

  • "did you hit a nerve" lol

the character's age is a basic fact. if u didnt even know how old he is (he even tells u) and ur still calling him a teen, u know nothing about the game. its just obvious

  • i gotta say i wasn't sure about this game at first, but after playing its one of the most titles of this gen. to all you ps3 owners who overlooked it because of the anime style SHAME ON YOU!!!! >:(

  • AT the beginning it sounds like the intro of a WW2 game. Call of Duty or Brothers ina rms, i´m not sure which. But the game is cool and the opening too^^

  • I honestly preferred the English dub over the original. Anyone else felt the same?

  • Can chins get any sharper than this? I understand narrow lower jaw is attractive, but this is ridiculous. Also yankzee said the game sucks.

  • yankzee?

  • Yes, Yankzee, or whatever his name is spelled. The guy who reviews games, talks fast and is funny.

  • yahtzee

  • I've played this game and I must say it's one of the game that all PS3 owner should have.Great graphic, great gameplay

you should try the game yourself... all the reviews are different (try to see gamespot)

  • Usually I just watch a game's intro movie once when playing it for the first time and then skip it from then on. But this is the only game where I sit through the entire intro every time. Simply Beautiful.

  • one of my favorite video game openings of all time.

    -kwon

  • its one of the best rpg titles for the PS3. if you have a PS3 don't just try this game...GET ONE. Valkyria Chronicles is one of those games that can be challenging but rewarding, with its nice anime blend of visuals and tactical lineage, an engaging love story and excellent voice work. you'll definitely dig this in for months. ^^

  • Yes, this game is definitely under appreciated. I still have to play it, but by reviews, I can tell that it is. I even found out about it through an IGN list and this was listed under the best game nobody played for PS3.

  • I wish SEGA would release their bleach versus crusade english dubversion game to england/europe and america etc. soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANyways Valkyria is by far the best strategy game i have played and i have to say it is very underappreciated!!!!

  • It's a shame that SEGA is pouring all of their money into Sonic Team because their RPG series are always great like Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia. If only Skies sold more, then we would be seeing a sequel or something.

  • hmmm... funny that since the beggining of the first copies of this game, I somehow knew that thos two in the end of the video would fall in love. Its so predictable, though ill try it since I like RTS and this game combines it also with action so you never know I might like it or not. Anyhow I still like the massive battles other games like Total War series give. Its more realistic.

  • Skies of Arcadia bombed spectacularly though, that's why SoA never got a sequel.

This game came out a year ago in Japan and the Producer is STILL waiting for the green light for a sequel.

Shame on the PS3 mags for not supporting this game.

The only Sega dev team that is making money is right now is Sonic Team.

  • Sega always does great rpgs, and I love the art style. It reminds me of Skies of Arcadia.

  • Love this game alot. Just bought it two days ago, and it's simply amazing.

If anyone has a high quality sound recording of this, send it to me by message. I'd appreciate that ;)

  • But I must say, who ever composed this really knows his stuff. I just barely played the demo and I don't know squat about the story, yet this opening always gives me goosebumps from the crescendo till the end. Actually, once I almost cried. MANLY TEARS REST ASSURED!!!!11

anyway just giving credit where its due XD

  • On the soundtrack I think this song is called "Succeeded Wish", but it has vocals. Which are nice, but I really like the instrumental version more.

  • I was disappointed by the vocals. I really wish there was a non-vocal, high-quality version. If anyone knows where to get it or has it, please pm me. Thanks for the upload.

  • My favorite game
