  • Awesome vintage video

  • Awesome video. R/C racing needs to bring back real dirt tracks like this. Knobby tires, cars sitting high, tries slipping kicking up roost.

Modern off road pro-racing might as well be paved tracks with a few jumps on them. Pin spikes or near slicks, low slung cars. Look at the track from the '11 IFMAR races, it's dirt technically, but more like blacktop.

  • wherer in sydney was this track?

  • @SP2333 this used to be the old st ives track (north sydney) but they changed it a few years ago. personally i prefer this old track.

  • You can see Masami's car over at the rc10 talk forum, very cool, about 95% custom/hand made. Is it just me or are there no doubles on this track? Would make life a lot easier, stil,l awesome racing,

  • Masami is definitely a legend in my lunchtime. B¬) I think he has been world champion with virtually every RC car. And yeah, these cars were fast, but you're looking at top pro drivers. Even back in '89 their rigs were costing big bux.

  • Sweet!

  • wow those buggies were quick even back then, they look almost as fast as 1/8th scale nitro

  • i used sanyo 1400 mh in 1989

  • This was back when the only batteries were 1200mAh cells

  • what was popular back then? I can't remember.. The Panasonic P-170 SCRs? I had 1300/1400mah cells back in those days lasted a good 8min for me using a 24deg stock motor (green machine).. Now the LiPos last forever.

  • It was huge. 10th scale buggies were probably 100 times more popular than it is now and there were 100 times as many rc clubs

  • @timsk the sanyo SCR 1400 the red cells

  • I remember reading about this in Radio Control Car Action. The "Stealth" cars that Masami and the other AE guys ran were extreme prototypes, so much so that AE didn't allow anyone to photograph them without the body on the cars. The other drivers also bitched about the low profile 2.2 tires that were used because they were so sticky.

  • The YR31 tire they used was not 2.2. the complaints were over how they applied to the rules in terms of availability and their 'loose fit' to the 2.0 rim. it was easily countered by fact that losi had a tire not avail to folks outside the team-the legendary x-pattern tire. in fact ae later found that they were faster on the XP when they got their hands on them after the worlds. in the old days of 2.1F/2.0R

    know ur facts

  • 7:54 a stick transmitter!? I raced weekly from 1986-1992 and remember a lot of things, never saw a stick transmitter at the track. wow.

  • The guy with the stick radio is british, in Europe most drivers use those instead of pistol grip. Also, I think they fly aircraft with Mode 1 radios.

  • Interesting. Mode 1&2 for aircraft, I am aware of. Sticks for surface craft, I was not. It just seems not as intuitive as pistol type. The old single stick aircraft radios seem to me to be more intuitive than mode 1 or 2 as well. :)

  • The way I see it, stick radios for surface types seem more apprpriate on toy rc's. As for Mode 1, I guess I'll never understand why Europe and Asia prefer their throttle on the right.

  • @NitroJunkie626

Did not see that much Euro using throttle on the right, but if some do this, it could be due to video games, since Arcade, PCs, Nintendo or other always have buttons for throttle/brake on the right hand, and steering on the left.

"Super Off Road" for example was released in 1989.

  • I used to race sticks then, Masami won the world champs with sticks also :)

  • how long did batteries last back then

  • about 13 to 15 min...

  • Barely make 4 minutes .

  • 4-8 minutes depending on the motor

  • I think Joel "Magic" Johnson belongs to carpet and ovals.

  • I'm sure that Brian Kinwald was watching them. :)

  • where the jumps?

  • Now thats my kinda speed lol

Great video .. Thanks for sharing

  • Masami is amzing

  • NICD's and brushed motors and maybe some PSM radio all around...we've come a long way!

  • well said lol

  • God, they would look like stock cars today.

  • rocket ron!!! what happened to jack johnson??

  • cool

  • the stealth cars owned that race and the master owned the driving

i wanna be like masami,,, the hell with mike

  • Man that was a classic race! Thanks for sharing. That race introduced 2.2" wheels and efficient 3-gear tranny's (2wd) to off-road racing. If I remember right, Joel Johnson ran the only Kyosho Ultima, Booth a Shummacher Top Cat, and maybe 2 drivers with the Losi JRX2. The AE/Yokomo drivers had a big advantage running the 2.2" wheels.

  • awesome

  • WOW what a classic race.

    Thanks for sharing

  • masami is the man!

  • damn Masami taking the 2 and 4wd win... awesome video thankyou for sharing!
