Actually it is true and very true. If you need patents are public record and you can look them up. He used wires in his video however didn't want to do the same at the concert and your toes are still on the ground it's pretty simple actually.

I remember hearing a long time ago that in the video for smooth criminal there was some issue with using wires so he had to come up with an idea so they didn't have to use wires, so him being the genius he was created these shoes.
