This is really sad to see. What year is this from? Obviously towards the end. The drugs just exasperated the real problem which was his mental illness. Bi polar disorder and I thought schizophrenia. People that over excel sometimes pay the price on other levels.
But that music that he plays....that`s great music. That will go on. Aurex Jazz Festival 1982. It`s on `Invitation`, the CD with that painting of Jaco`s with a parasol.
The only footage I've seen of Jaco was definately not like this. He was fully composed, articulate, and had a calm demeanor. I'm referring to the starlicks instructional video he did, where of course, he didn't really teach anything, but was very informative, nonetheless. There's a 15 minute jam with him Scofield on guitar and a drummer just wailing away.
Look this is reality. Don't hide reality. If people get upset, then they are getting upset about something that happened and still happens. Yes there is a constructive side. You show people, musicians, artists, and everyone the reality of what happens to anyone, no matter how great if they succumb to the same vices. I find it entertaining regardless.
Definitely keep this on. This is Jaco in his rawest form. He was a human being who lived his life to the fullest. Unfortunately, he allowed his excesses to drag him down but his successes were greater than his failures. He played in the greatest progressive jazz band ever, made himself into one of the the greatest bassists in the world and created a sound that's been (and still being) copied all over world . This is simply a portrait of a musical genius with his guard down having fun.
he just drunk, so what, i am fucking wasted right now, and i have bipolar..big fucking deal. you expect him to act crazy because he has a 'disease', act crazy, this is who he is, a cat is just chillin with his homies..not sad
jaco was an amazing bass player but he liked a drink..as do we all .. i wish everyone would be comfortable with that fact and stop playing up the skitzo aspect .. it all just sounds like after the fact excuses
I have a hard time believing that Jaco would have any opinion at all re: this video. When a cat is in a manic state as they often are when bi polar or schizophrenic, this is how they are. There is no shame in my opinion. Those who love Jaco know that he was as cool as anyone who walked the planet and the world's greatest bass player.
I would imagine that this is extremely disturbing to see for most fans. I've looked after many psych clients who are "manic" or "hypomanic" and Jaco obviously appears to be in a manic phase. I imagine that he is rolling in his grave right about now... truly humiliating. Perhaps this is good for awareness of mental health issues. But Jaco hasn not given the OK and I can't imagine his family doing so either.
I say you keep this on. For real. I know what yall thinking but this is who Jaco was: down to earth. How many ppl do u know that r like this?? He was one of (if not THE) greatest bassists of all time, but he wasn't perfect. So what? He was who he was on and off the stage. Yeah drugs are bad, but so what? All the young bassists out there that are like "OMG" should instead learn from his mistakes. Drugged or shaky-sober, he was the greatest to me.
I think this film is important as a biagraphical episode and illustrates well Bills book which is also full of wacko Jaco episodes and is ok'd by the Jaco estate. Jaco was this way a lot of the last 7 years. The tragedy is that he was a living national treasure and those things are never taken care of, they have to die first and then everyone can cash in again without taking any chances of the dude wanting a fair share of the cash. IMHO He was seriously ripped off.
Please take these down bro. You should be ashamed of yourself. This isn't about Jaco..it's about your ego. Do the right thing and remove all this stuff. Jaco's family have enough problems without having this stuff rubbed in their faces.
exploit--unfortunate death--I love jaco more than most--my sons middle name is Jaco--no bs--but drugs are drugs---this should be better than any dont do drug commercial

If you don't experience the emotional extents, there's no way you could express them through your music. Its really that simple.
