I had to take my 2000 Sebring to the shop to get it fixed after dying randomly. They replaced the crank position sensor after I told them that I replaced the fuel pump and fuel injectors and didn't fix the problem. They charged me $300 and the car is fixed. There was no check engine light and the scanner did not show any codes. Stupid Chrysler! They need to stop making junk cars and start making lawn mowers.

@LAUMENsaysNO get it scanned and see if any codes have been memorized, cause a ton of stuff can do that, from a weak fuel pump to a weak fuel injectors.

Hey scotty i have a 1999 dodge Stratus 2.4L that has died while driving twice. Both times I was able to start it right up. I have also and issue where while I was driving and the yellow check engine light came on. I felt nothing out of the ordinary while I was driving. But when I stopped and turned it off and then turned it back on the check engine light did not turn back on anymore. Is there a chance that the codes would be saved if I had a scanner read the car?
@jdmordor yes, try that, but if not, see a good mechanic with a high level scan tool and drive it till it drops, and that scanner makes a movie of the data to be analyzed in order to find out what's crapping out.

@erck72 Check your ECT engine coolant temp sensor if the fan does not work. put ac on and see if the fan will work. if it does, then your ect is not good. careful not to overheat your car

@730thegoon fuel filter or bad pump, change the filter and pressure test the pump is that's not it. But if the pressure is good, check for vacuum leaks for that stalling.
Hello Scotty! I have this 1993 Nissan Sentra GA14 Engine. Usually the engine starts smoothly. But after a long drive and I totally stop the engine, I can't get it to start instantly. I have to wait until the engine cools down. Any idea what might be causing this? Hoping for your advise...Thanks!
@ArkiStoks check my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and do that to find out what isn't working. Often a bad dist on that model though, so check for no spark.

@TheKooliestKoolie get the code, there are 2 thousand different ones, so start there. if it has a distributor, they often cause it in that model though
@TheKooliestKoolie that's an evap leak in the gas tank system. basically, pay a mechanic to check that out as special tools and pressure machines are needed to analyze it.
Hello Scotty, I have 94 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 V6 engine. My car suddenly shuts off while driving. Starts back up but usually without gas and shifting to drive quickly dies again. I noticed my air filter has gas on it. Also there is a ticking sound after idling for awhile from my EVAP Purge Selanoid? I think that is what the part is. And its getting to common and dangerous to bring into a mechanic. I have no check engine light on either. I do have a transmission leak but I replace the fluid.
@messagefromgod77 Realize those vans are endless money pits being that old and being chrysler products. First, check the fuel pump pressure and pray it's just a weak fuel pump, cause those junker vans often get wiring and computer problems that will make your hair fall out trying to fix em. Scotty
@akolo25 there are many sensor that can do that, but often in those it's not a sensor but a bad distributor, I change a lot of them out on that model.
@51MontyPython normally you can feel a certain pulse, but to check it correctly, watch my video "how to check out your catalytic converter" and do that test on the cat and the muffler to find if any restrictions exist

I use Duralast sockets, and that same scan tool too! lol I like the duralast sockets because there not as expensive as snap-on but they still use that "flank drive" thing, you can tell cause theres no corners inside the socket.
Hi I have a question: I own a Mazda Tribute 2005 and it dies while driving, while I am at a stop sign or while shifting from park to reverse or to drive. I took it to the dealership and they changed the computer and it was working for about 2 days and it started doing the same. when i took it back they said they drove it for 70 miles and it didnt happen to them so they say they cant help me... any ideas?
@danlinkgan watch my video "Fixing a car that idles poorly" and try all that. And find a better place to get it fixed, those dealers are generally crooks who don't give a crap about fixing your car unless they can make a ton of money. I doubt they drove it 70 miles, set the trip odometer to see if they did IF you try again. They charged you a ton for the computer I would assume, and they were wrong, try get them to make it right (and good luck on that one, knowing how most work.) scotty

@spitinlavaa generally bad distributors do that on Hondas, Or a bad fuel pump. The pump is in the back, if the humming is coming from back there. Scotty

@scottykilmer, I will give the ignition switch a try. I took it to a mechanic today, he plugged in the diagnostic tool and nothing popped up. He also double checked the battery and alternator, and both were fine. He told me that it is electronic part of the ignition, not the switch. I'm not sure what he meant. Please elaborate. Thank you!

@BaileyJao If the alternator is really fine, and many guys test em wrong, then odds are the ignition switch is going out, shutting down power, OR you have a serious wiring or computer problem. Switches go out more commonly. scotty

@kokahemant those switches are electronic and work off the brake light switch. Check power there first, a bad switch or blown fuse will do that. Normally the shiffter itself is fine. Scotty
@kokahemant check all the fuse boxes for a blown fuse, pull them out one at a time, and if they're blown, the metal will be burned at the top and not connected anymore inside. For power at the switch, get a test light and check to see if it lights up and finds power at one side of the brake switch under the pedal, and then see if it sends power out when you step on the brake and power lights up when you check the other side of the switch wire.Scotty
Hi Scotty , my car does not have the check engine light on, no codes, but my car hesitates/lacks power, you would think it would set a code by now... I checked/changed everything as follows: Compression ok , changed plugs, wires ok, injector pulse perfect,spark ok, no vacuum leaks , cleaned out throttle, checked tps, cleaned iac pintle, cleaned egr, changed out fuel filter and air, also new timing chain...... @karlakatie2215 Pay a mechanic to run a dealer level scan tool analysis on the vehicle. That data says tons more than check engine lights that only come on when a problem reaches gigantic proportions. Scotty

@LMLFE Many things can do that unfortunately. weak fuel pumps, bad wiring, bad main computer, or bad power relays .when it dies and won't start, watch my other video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and try all that fast. Scotty
had this problem with 91 f150 rather than replacing alot of high cost parts pulled out volt meter spent a few hours on it found it was the Ignition Control Module, it was overheating due to the thermal grease going bad and water getting in between the surface. with some fighting and encouragement from a grinder cut tool replaced it w/ new grease and not only is the problem gone but it runs better.
Scotty, ive had problems with my 90 ford ranger 4cylinder 2.3l. after replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and ignition coils it turns out my ignition control module is bad. Before I replace it just want to know what could have caused it to go bad?
@scottykilmer scotty, i replace my icm and it made no difference whatso ever, i also replaced the battery and terminals. and nothing ive put more than $500 dollars in replacement parts. i really dont know what the problem could be. another thing, the owners before me messed up the cables pretty badly and i tried cleaning them up and fixing them. there used to be a short circuit and you could hear it if you moved the cable around in the engine bay. i fixed them up and put electrical tape and fix
@LMLFE might of been same thing as mine, thermal grease went bad and water got in there causing it to overheat little tip next time spend some time on the internet researching your problem and few hours testing everything before replacing parts took me about 4 hours to find the info on how to test the ICM along with other things to test and another 3-5 replacing the part only cause the bolts where corroded. but hey replacing all those parts means you don't have think about them for awhile!

@WARRIOR1125 Sounds like the Idle air control vavle, First try cleaning out the throttle body with a old tooth brush and some carb/throttle body cleaner. If that doesn't work it may need a idle air control valve.

Is the correct reading when its on or off or are both readings wrong and i need to fix it? And if so how do i fix it?

@banuelos39 Those things are notorious for bad computer circuits causing such problems.But bad wiring oir battery will do that, especially the 1684 code. Scotty
Anyways, what if a car dies not randomly, but whenever you pull up to and stop at a stop light? I have a 1982 Toyota (carburetor) Pickup that use to do this once in a while, but not it's getting to the point where it does this all the time now. Whenever stopped for more than 2 mins anywhere, the car starts shaking, choking, then eventually dies. I'm thinking it might be a carb or head gasket issue. With your experience, what do you think?
I got a brand new Actron Auto Scanner Plus today at Sears because it's what you use on your episodes. Are these scanners any good and easy to use? Also I have a check engine light in my subaru but its not blinking its steady. My mechanic said dont worry about it but I found the Actron scanner plus for $133.00 on clearance at Sears so I will check the car tommorrow to see what pops up.
Hey Scotty I was a mechanic at some point inf my life but I have not as many years experience as you. Wanted to ask you something , how do you check a Car's Computer? I only replace 2 of those while I was wrenching and I checked them by " tapping" them with a hammer's handle and watch the RPM go up or down. Is there another quick check or trick to check'em?
@guayacan07 computers are cows to check out, the old whack em is one method, but they can break in many ways. You must have worked mainly on japanese cars, cause they rarely break down. American car computers break ALL the time. Scotty

i got a 95 grand marquis with 217k miles on it it misfires pretty often and dies occasionally and it goes through a quart of oil a week but still has good power when it doesnt miss. it has autolite copper plugs and replaced the water pump at 207k do i need a rebuild?
@ssiii Sure sounds like your engine is just wearing out, using that much oil. If it doesn't leak much oil but burns most of it, that's definitely the case. Scotty
what about if you get all these problems, but no check engine light? mine has been shaking violently recently as well. no bad codes. it usually does it on a warm engine, but temp is normal.

@sufieuphi89 Many cars don't trip codes very accurately. BUT, often no codes is a fuel pump or intake manifold vacuum leak, which often won't trip codes. Scotty

Hey Scotty, I have a 1971 Camaro and it shuts off under load. It won't turn on right away, I have to wait 15-20 min or let it cool down and it starts right up? It can idle all day but shuts off while driving. I also changed the dist. cap, rotor, module, wires, plugs and still nothing. It's an Hei dist not point btw. maybe if you can point me in the right direction? Thx man!
@PRPWR Check the compression of the engine first, if it's low, the engine is just wearing out. If you have an electronic fuel pump installed, it could be a weak pump, so check that too. Scotty

@730thegoon fuel filter or bad pump, change the filter and pressure test the pump is that's not it. But if the pressure is good, check for vacuum leaks for that stalling.

Hello Scotty, I have 94 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 V6 engine. My car suddenly shuts off while driving. Starts back up but usually without gas and shifting to drive quickly dies again. I noticed my air filter has gas on it. Also there is a ticking sound after idling for awhile from my EVAP Purge Selanoid? I think that is what the part is. And its getting to common and dangerous to bring into a mechanic. I have no check engine light on either. I do have a transmission leak but I replace the fluid.

I use Duralast sockets, and that same scan tool too! lol I like the duralast sockets because there not as expensive as snap-on but they still use that "flank drive" thing, you can tell cause theres no corners inside the socket.

Hi I have a question: I own a Mazda Tribute 2005 and it dies while driving, while I am at a stop sign or while shifting from park to reverse or to drive. I took it to the dealership and they changed the computer and it was working for about 2 days and it started doing the same. when i took it back they said they drove it for 70 miles and it didnt happen to them so they say they cant help me... any ideas?

And find a better place to get it fixed, those dealers are generally crooks who don't give a crap about fixing your car unless they can make a ton of money. I doubt they drove it 70 miles, set the trip odometer to see if they did IF you try again. They charged you a ton for the computer I would assume, and they were wrong, try get them to make it right (and good luck on that one, knowing how most work.) scotty

@scottykilmer, I will give the ignition switch a try. I took it to a mechanic today, he plugged in the diagnostic tool and nothing popped up. He also double checked the battery and alternator, and both were fine. He told me that it is electronic part of the ignition, not the switch. I'm not sure what he meant. Please elaborate. Thank you!

@BaileyJao If the alternator is really fine, and many guys test em wrong, then odds are the ignition switch is going out, shutting down power, OR you have a serious wiring or computer problem. Switches go out more commonly. scotty

@kokahemant those switches are electronic and work off the brake light switch. Check power there first, a bad switch or blown fuse will do that. Normally the shiffter itself is fine. Scotty

@kokahemant check all the fuse boxes for a blown fuse, pull them out one at a time, and if they're blown, the metal will be burned at the top and not connected anymore inside. For power at the switch, get a test light and check to see if it lights up and finds power at one side of the brake switch under the pedal, and then see if it sends power out when you step on the brake and power lights up when you check the other side of the switch wire.Scotty

Hi Scotty , my car does not have the check engine light on, no codes, but my car hesitates/lacks power, you would think it would set a code by now... I checked/changed everything as follows: Compression ok , changed plugs, wires ok, injector pulse perfect,spark ok, no vacuum leaks , cleaned out throttle, checked tps, cleaned iac pintle, cleaned egr, changed out fuel filter and air, also new timing chain...... Scotty so I finally replaced my ignition control module and it made no difference, still dies and idles very poorly and very short time. I can hear it misfiring and when I accelerate rpm jump up and down and if I let go of gas it just dies I'm tired I've put more than $500 into it and no difference... Help me plz

had this problem with 91 f150 rather than replacing alot of high cost parts pulled out volt meter spent a few hours on it found it was the Ignition Control Module, it was overheating due to the thermal grease going bad and water getting in between the surface. with some fighting and encouragement from a grinder cut tool replaced it w/ new grease and not only is the problem gone but it runs better.

Scotty, ive had problems with my 90 ford ranger 4cylinder 2.3l. after replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and ignition coils it turns out my ignition control module is bad. Before I replace it just want to know what could have caused it to go bad?

@scottykilmer scotty, i replace my icm and it made no difference whatso ever, i also replaced the battery and terminals. and nothing ive put more than $500 dollars in replacement parts. i really dont know what the problem could be. another thing, the owners before me messed up the cables pretty badly and i tried cleaning them up and fixing them. there used to be a short circuit and you could hear it if you moved the cable around in the engine bay. i fixed them up and put electrical tape and fix

@LMLFE might of been same thing as mine, thermal grease went bad and water got in there causing it to overheat little tip next time spend some time on the internet researching your problem and few hours testing everything before replacing parts took me about 4 hours to find the info on how to test the ICM along with other things to test and another 3-5 replacing the part only cause the bolts where corroded. but hey replacing all those parts means you don't have think about them for awhile!

@WARRIOR1125 Sounds like the Idle air control vavle, First try cleaning out the throttle body with a old tooth brush and some carb/throttle body cleaner. If that doesn't work it may need a idle air control valve.

Anyways, what if a car dies not randomly, but whenever you pull up to and stop at a stop light? I have a 1982 Toyota (carburetor) Pickup that use to do this once in a while, but not it's getting to the point where it does this all the time now. Whenever stopped for more than 2 mins anywhere, the car starts shaking, choking, then eventually dies. I'm thinking it might be a carb or head gasket issue. With your experience, what do you think?

Hey Scotti,
I got a brand new Actron Auto Scanner Plus today at Sears because it's what you use on your episodes. Are these scanners any good and easy to use? Also I have a check engine light in my subaru but its not blinking its steady. My mechanic said dont worry about it but I found the Actron scanner plus for $133.00 on clearance at Sears so I will check the car tommorrow to see what pops up.

Hey Scotty I was a mechanic at some point inf my life but I have not as many years experience as you. Wanted to ask you something , how do you check a Car's Computer? I only replace 2 of those while I was wrenching and I checked them by " tapping" them with a hammer's handle and watch the RPM go up or down. Is there another quick check or trick to check'em?

i got a 95 grand marquis with 217k miles on it it misfires pretty often and dies occasionally and it goes through a quart of oil a week but still has good power when it doesnt miss. it has autolite copper plugs and replaced the water pump at 207k do i need a rebuild?

Hey Scotty, I have a 1971 Camaro and it shuts off under load. It won't turn on right away, I have to wait 15-20 min or let it cool down and it starts right up? It can idle all day but shuts off while driving. I also changed the dist. cap, rotor, module, wires, plugs and still nothing. @PRPWR Check the compression of the engine first, if it's low, the engine is just wearing out. If you have an electronic fuel pump installed, it could be a weak pump, so check that too. Scotty
