Love that shot of Notre Dame at 5:49, the flames of hell has descended upon Paris! It makes so much sense how and by whom was Frollo going to be killed. The flames encase Frollo into hell!!
And of course, at Frollo's death, when the latin lyrics translate as "When the damned shall be cast down into the searing flames" and Frollo is just hanging there... so much dramatic irony! I love it!
This is brilliant! They mixed the Dies Irae with various other latin prayers and hymns, and it turned out as just... Epic! Good thing about being Catholic- we allowed the world to keep this lovely language!
I just wanted to say beautifully done. Having the lyrics and translations there with the score is amazing, and tells the whole story by itself (I've seen it enough time to have memorised what the characters have said anyway). I love how you kept in the main audio track, but made the score louder. Well done! It's so moving.
i love when Quasimodo and Frollo are fighting on top of Notre Dame because not only is it dramatic and the music is fantastic but the art on Notre Dame really shines. You can tell the animators really put a lot of time and effort into the look of the cathedral
This movie needs to get re-released in theatres JUST for this scene. I love it, even if the three gargoyles kill the mood it's such an amazing scene! My favourite part is with the molten lead pouring down from the belfries; the contrast and light and shadow is just so beautiful.
@PhoenixEntertain But it makes sense because Frollo was using God's name as an excuse to commit evil and when someone does that, God will intervene because His name will not be misused or used in vain.
I love that when the choir chants words "Libera me Domine" (Free me, Lord), the bells start making sound as Quasimodo is struggling to get free, almost as if it's by divine providence and the will of God for him to be set free and save Esmeralda. I love it.
@timeparadox888 I am a Latin student and this is my favorite example of Latin in a popular movie! and the music is amazing and the lyrics are correlating to what they are feeling:) Love it! and Laitin!!
@timeparadox888 Latin when shit goes down, German when shit is getting fucked up, Russian when shit is going to get fucked up, English when shit gets gay
@bungiecoocoo I totally agree! It is probably the most beautiful language ever! and it should make a come back! it is in use every day! Latin is the basis of English! It is 60% Latin and 40% Germanic! It is also currently taught in Schools all over the Country!
@LordGodsServant Or perhaps he simply is such a kind, decent person he can't just allow another human being to die without doing anything, no matter how bad person it might be. It's a common hero thing.
@LordGodsServant Not to mention he grew up in a church, with the Archdeacon and all. He's a good man and I guess he just can't let something bad happen if there is something he can do something to prevent it.
I do very much love the Latin Language and I find it the most beautiful and powerful, and in all truth I am sadden that the language has been 'lost' but at least it can live on in song.
Oh and did anyone hear the Goofey cry at 4:58 ^^ I thought it was amuseing and a comic relief for this part of the movie.
I never realized how the lyrics fir so perfectly with the events of the film... FUCKING AWESOME! Truly this is one of the Disney corporations most well thought out film, except for the Gargoyles.
I think the film would have been infinitely better without those FUCKING Gargoyles, especially the fat gay one voiced by Jason Alexander. GO BACK AND FINISH DUCKMAN JAY!!!
@AGuyInAHat I agree, Hugo is pretty much the only thing I don't like about this movie. Victor and Laverne are passable, but Hugo is just annoying.
By the way, does anyone know where Laverne's name comes from? I know Victor and Hugo come from the original author (Victor Hugo), but what about Laverne?
does anyone actually realize that the latin translations not only go with the scene but it's also a prayer to God in praise and asking for mercy when He actually comes to get His people???
Frollo is quite possibly the darkest, most vile villain in the Disney Animated Canon, and considering that its villains include people like Maleficent, Scar and McLeach, that is saying a lot. He committed murder ONSCREEN, burned down half of Paris, and tried to murder an innocent family because he THOUGHT they sheltered Gypsies, all the while constantly preaching he's the Lord's servant.
Sickening. His demise was very satisfying, as if God himself was condemning him for his sins.
@TSFF18 Disney's version of Frollo is a corrupted version of Victor Hugo's original version. If you really want to understand the character, read the original novel. You know how Disney ruins things. Also, let me point out that Frollo (Disney's version of Frollo) wasn't really the "Lord's servant". Throughout the movie, we see what a hypocrite he is. He doesn't even care for the church, it's all a cover-up. He even threw the archdeacon to the floor at 6:05.
@TSFF18 Oh I do too. Don't get me wrong. But they never follow anything to the original storyline or keep characters true to themselves like in the books.
Thanks for the translation! Definitely brings more life and depth to the scene. One of the reasons I love this movie is because I LOVE the Latin liturgical music. Favourite out of all the Christian music I can listen to. Excellent work on translating it. And don't worry about the movie audio- sometimes windows movie maker is just NOT worth fighting with.
Besides that this scene is awesomely epic, did anyone else notice the gargoyle changes positions between 8:21- 8:28? First it's above Frollo, then it's next to him, then above etc.
omg can u imagine how dramatic this would have been in real life? like with the bells vibrating and the lava falling from the building... i would have certainly turned to this religion in a snap
This movie. THIS MOVIE. I doubt I'll ever be able to put my love for this film into words (coherently, without hyperbole) but this little video you made wonderfully illustrates its beauty. As many have already said, this scene is already pretty epic on its own, but the translation...just adds a new dimension on the whole thing. I will NEVER be able to thank you enough for putting this together <3
That was a powerful scene before I knew what the Latin meant. Now that I know, it's really....I can't find the word for it, but knowing the Latin makes it so much stronger and more powerful. Thank you for translating.
The swell in the music in the part with the cloak was incredible.
Look up "God Thinks" by Voltaire. Just like the "Eat that Watermelon" song, it may cause offense to first time listeners, but it has a message.
And Frollo's defeat always seemed like a deus ex machina to me. But carefully watch the part where Frollo starts chopping Gargoyles with his sword... And which one he decides to stand on.
And I personally loved having the music in focus with the translations. :D
Many Disney villians have fallen to their deaths, but this fall has to one of the most epic. Literally divine intervention and Notre Dame coming to life, the music just totally clinched it, especially with the subs you so helpfully provided!
LOL at 6:00, Frollo puts his shord onto some invisible belt, and then in the next shot the sword has completly disappeared. Love this movie, and especially this scene, I just noticed that little error and wanted to point it out. The part at 5:40 when Quasimodo pours the molten copper out of the cathedral is freakin' epic! I love the music!
Actually, Kyrie Eleison is Greek, right spelling is "Κύριε, ἐλέησον" and is of course from the original Gospels. This scene with the subtitles is literally more powerful than anything I have ever seen on cinema, animated or not.....
"We just thought maybe you were made of something stronger."
Not everyone likes the gargoyles, but I thought these were their best lines in the movie. There's the funny one (Hugo), the sophisticated yet sweet one (Victor), and the encouraging one (LaVerne).
And dude, I just love how after they 'revert' back to stone, that powerful fiery glow washes over Quasimodo.
I had no idea what that song ment untill now. It matches whats going on in the scene. that is te most epic scene in the movie!!! Thank you for openning my eyes to such a master piece!
2:22 ~ I believe that that translation is supposed to be "Saeculum per ignem", chief. Most of these lyrics are from the soundtrack in the 'Libera Me' movie of the early 90's. Just a minor hiccup, though. Nothing more. Excellent video quality, by the way. This is one of my favorite movie scores! :D
This is why I love Disney during the 90's. They truly put every effort in making their films dephfull and meaning~ful. Thanks for creating this! It really brings into perspectives the "hidden meanings" of this film.
i am so glad you made this! i love blasting this piece out of my car windows, and i always shout "sanctuary" with quasimodo. church latin pronunciations still sound so strange to me..
btw, does anyone know what the text to the very beginning verses of the movie is?
Thank you for making this video! It gives an entirely different dimension to the scene, and I wouldn't have suspected it without the subtitles! They add so much meaning--great work. :)
@Sapientiores That's what I love about that scene. I never wuuld have known it, either, if I hadn't gotten the soundtrack and had read the liner notes. =)
@Sapientiores They completely change the meaning of the scene, I agree! And give it a depth that I didn't know existed. Especially at 3:01ish, when Quasi is holding Esmeralda above his head, yelling "sanctuary" -- the "sanctus, sanctus in excelsis" gave me goosebumps.
I give all the thanks and credit to finally being able to get my hands on the soundtrack and for the Disney people being so nice as to have the Latin translations in the liner notes. Ultimate win. =D
Thanks! Though, there are parts where the soundtrack music is the tiniest fraction of a millisecond off from the movie audio. While working on this, Windows Movie Maker was causing my computer to crash repeatedly, so I had to get it all together pretty quickly.

i am so glad you made this! i love blasting this piece out of my car windows, and i always shout "sanctuary" with quasimodo. church latin pronunciations still sound so strange to me..
btw, does anyone know what the text to the very beginning verses of the movie is?

Ah Damn Latin is Beautiful
I think all the best orchestral songs all have Latin choruses in them, makes them seem more epic

@Sapientiores same here
with the subtitles
I understand the scene even better
and I also understand why the music is perfect
and latin is not my forte
so thanks for posting

@Sapientiores You summed it up exactly. Thanks for saving me the trouble of finding the words :)
