Hockey has periods, not quarters. And they're 20 minutes long instead of 15. A quarter = 1/4 = 25%, so there must be 4 of them for a complete game 1 hour.  Periods are 20 mins, so there are just 3 (if there was a nifty word for 1/3, as quarter is to 1/4 it would be nicer)

Either the reference is not about hockey, or postal service has just never played the game since they think it's divided into quarters..

Ben Gibbard (the singer) is American. If he also writes the lyrics he probably would refer to Association Football as Soccer. Originally Rugby was also called "Rugby Football" so Americans used the part of the word Assoc. to make "Soc-cer" (a person from the association) a separate distinction.  But now Rugby Football is just called Rugby, and Soccer degenerated to any group of people kicking a ball around, so we have this odd argumentative topic between American and English speakers.

I know that. I have a degree in computer science. I was referring ADDITIONAL word like "quarter." You may call 1/4 "a fourth" OR you may call it "a quarter." 1/3 is just "a third." So, in Hockey they aren't called 1/3s. They're called "periods" but that word is also shared by women who are menstruating so I was hoping there was a better word ;^)

There are no quarters in hockey. Hockey is divided into periods. The lyrics do not mention periods. They mention quarters. Hockey is not what he is referring to. He is referring to a sport divided into quarters in which you would have a goalie. You can draw a venn diagram if it helps your confuddled little brain.

I think Ben Gibbard just blew it on the lyrics hahaha. I read that LaCrosse has 4 quarters AND a goalie. But, why would the 3rd quarter be so important? Isn't the 4th quarter more decisive? So, we've ruled out hockey for having no quarters, and football/soccer for only having halves. I think Gibbard probably was one of those kids who incorrectly called hockey periods "quarters" when they were playing pee wee hockey.
