Andy Green, has got balls, I mean, his voice doesnt even crack when the car slides a little at around 550 mph, if that was me the entire car would have been brown and smelly, good luck to Andy and the team for the 1,000 mph plus run whenever that is (I heard 2014?)
@Camerameister - Just to confirm that this is indeed the Final Run 66 ! You'll even hear this from Andy Green himself as he goes through the pre-run checks at 0:25 ::) You can also compare Andy's commentary from this Final Run 66, and the previous Run 65 ( which is also featured on YouTube with the Cockpit View). Valentina
@Camerameister - Andy also says that "this is the 2nd Run on Thursday 15th October" , so together with the reference to Run 66 it seems to confirm that this was indeed the Final Run. I assume the plan was to do "back-to-back runs" but as you know, after this 2nd Run and the achievement of the LSR there was no need!
@kolavalentina Yeah, I heard that. I just wondered if it was in reference to any other runs that day, though I can't imagine why they would have done a test run in a vehicle which was starting to fatigue quite appreciably.
Your logic seems to back it up. I understand that there were only 66 runs, half of which were in Jordan.
@csmcmillion It's an approximation from Rolls Royce book "The Jet Engine", p.219. YT doesn't give me enough space to transcribe the explanation. TBH, I don't really get it either but I accept that RR have their own reasons for doing it that way.
@GotSkillz09 - You're right, and one of the key problems is to stop the car "lifting off" and ensuring that the wheels can withstand the massive rotational forces!
@aleksbmw -Yes! He is an amazing guy with so much "cool"" I attended his lecture on Thrust and Bloodhound last year at Beaulieu, and also met him a couple of times during the course of the Thrust Project in the mid-90s.Now I'm praying for their success with Bloodhound SSC in South Africa next year!
All four wheels made by HDA Forging Ltd in Redditch, West Midlands. Each a work of art in aluminium if you get a chance to see them up close on the car in Coventry museum of transport.
the best of british! andy green and richard noble, absoute heroes. we have still, and always will have, the right fuckin stuff! love you yanks, but, you know!.........
Oh, yes he is!! The car was directionally unstable at high speeds and the steering system via the narrow set rear wheels was not the most effective. The car had no toe in for self centring, so every input required another input to centre the car. Also at a high sub sonic speed range, the car would swing off in one direction, requiring a major correction input of steering. Driver has the nickname in the RAF of "Dead Dog"
I remember some footage of this - a crew followed the tracks it had made. At one point it had lost contact with the ground - it had "taken-off" for 23-30 yards...........
Actually the only time Thrust SSC left the ground was in testing in Jordan at approx 500mph when it hit a bump on the extremely poor desert surface which launched the car skyward for 20 to 30 metres. In Black Rock she stayed firmly planted on the ground as designed.
Absolutely true! Remember this was the final supersonic run, and most of the risks are during acceleration and running at supersonic speed. So imagine the relaxation when you're thru the crux!
i just watched this with with my mouth open in disbelief.Simply amazing piece of footage

@Camerameister What Andy meant was, that was the return run, and for the video log he just explained what was going on.
geovora043 6 months ago
This was the SECOND last run, Run 65. Final run was Run 66 which was when those peak speeds were reached.
No actual horsepower equivalent for jets but 1hp = 550 ft lbs/sec = 375mph. Therefore:
40,000lb st thrust x 763mph = 30,520,000 divided by 375 = 81,386.3333hp
81,000hp.
Bloodhound will produce about 133,000 at design speed of 1,050mph.

@kolavalentina But he says "looking for a return run within the hour". I assumed he meant this was not it.
My understanding was that the final run was the one when he said "Everything is going to be wonderful" which he doesn't say this time.

At 700 mph the air is more like water so it requires an enormous amount or torque to overcome this and a very, very strong windshield.
