I think Eric Clapton has had the better career, but they're both incredible guitarists. When they perform together, they just feed off each other's energy. Its great.
Actually, Hendrix asked to jam with Cream. No one had ever done that before. They said ok, and Jimi proceeded to jam on "Killing Floor" by Willie Dixon and Eric just dropped his hands and stopped playing. His jaw was probably on the floor as well.
Does it really matter who is the best. I just thank God that these guys are still rocking in whatever form. So much trash. Just enjoy it for what it is. Mastery across the board!
Fact is, EC understood that the 'Guitar Hero' thing wouldn't last. He knew this before Cream as there were more technically gifted UK guitarists around (Bernie Watson & Albert Lee), not including Beck et al. EC eventually started to sing, moving into the latest fashion (e.g. becomes a pseudo-folkie in the 70s; pop star in 80s) has also kept the money rolling in; being quite fanciable to women helps.
@anthonythirteen Beck can't sing, whilst after experimenting in the 70s seemingly prefers not to be a sideman to a posturing lead singer, and has an electic mix of music & perhaps didn't get quite the looks from the ladies as he aged.
One makes more money than the other, but both respect each other. I see this tour as EC paying respect to Beck - keeping both men's profile up in a tough world of plastic pop stars.
Both Jeff, Eric and Jimmy Page played in a group named the yardbirds. Jeff and eric play a little different, Jeff plays with his finger/nails Eric uses a pick. Who is better, does it really mater.
this may sound dumb but beck does not look like he has aged like other musicians of his era, whats with his hair? is it his or a wig or does he just dye it black and it is really thin & gray..he just simply looks the same thru-out the last 30 yrs. how is that possible?
just read through some of the pro/con comments on either guitarist.......... seems to me some people confuse guitar technique with musical feeling. having just listened to clapton's autumn leaves from his new album i feel a lifetime's playing 'truthfully' has led up to a defining vocal and a consummate closing solo. clapton has progressed......almost to peter green level.
I read that when Hendrix first turned up in London Jeff and Townsend went to see him then ran round to Clapton and said Hendrix was nicking all his riffs, I got the definate impression Jefff wasn't too keen on him at first, still he's aknowledged him as the maestro he realy was many times since, I love this guys playing, he's a true virtuoso of the strat.
AFTER ALL THESE YEARS BECK IS STILL EVOLVING AND CHANGING. HIS STYLE......WHEREAS CLAPTON ,(WHO I STILL ADMIRE GREATLY)....HAS BEEN STUCK IN THE SAME BLUES PROGRESSIONS FOR DECADES
clapton looks old and tired compared to beck i think if hendrix was still alive hed have gone the way jeff beck has and advanced his guitar style as far as possible and i saw him on the jools holland show recently he played somewhere over the rainbow and was excellent his violinning technique on guitar is as good as yngwie malmsteens and beck uses tapping in his playing where as clapton still plays in the same key all the time and has not advanced in over 40 years beck rules old clapton sucks
I don't know if Beck actually uses the Jeff Beck model strat, but a guitar player I used to play with had one of the Beck model strata and it had a much thicker neck and the type of wood for the body was actually quite heavy. It wasn't as heavy as a Les Paul, but it wasn't that far off. Probably a couple of lbs difference
these guys stopped using gibson guitars because they were too heavy around theire neck but if you want to sound heavy like the cream jeff beck group and ten years after thas what you need
I went to see this concert and it was the most amazing, spectacular, guitar intensive, super, better-than-ever, classic, awesome, rockin', bluesin', concert ever i had ever seen :)
@Carlosmr1984 she moved on and is currently playing with other jazz legends. now he has rhonda smith on bass. vinnie colaiuta also moved on. he is replaced by Narada Michael Walden. Jason Rebello stayed though
@1JAT1 Oh I see, thanks bro (or sis) ...To be honest I liked the previous rhytm section the almighty Jeff had, with Vinnie and Tal (drooling here haha). But this one is good as well.
She's doing tours with Chick Corea - who she was aleady seconded to before Jeff got her on his group - and her own band. It's a shame her 'cuteness' is always refered to over her stupendous bass playing.
@mckendrick4046 Well you're right my friend. (The cuteness thing, but hey, I cannot avoid lookin' at her!)
Didn't know she was working with Chick, that's really awesome! I always thought she would make it big, sometimes her playing reminds me of Jaco Pastorius, hope she keeps rising that amazin' tide!
Yeah, she's been on Chick's group for quite a number of years, now. Chick was her first proper bass gig after she got o the States and swapped guitar for bass. She was with Chick from around 2006/2007 and still performs on his regular group. Jeff only borrowed her fro a while. Somebody else was asking about Vinnie Colaiuta.... well, Vinnie's on Herbie Hancock's group again for the time being. Both have recently recorded 'Space Captain' with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.

Being a bit sarcastic in the last remark. As a guitar player myself for decades, I am acutely aware of the unique talent that both Beck and Clapton bring to the instrument. I recoil from any mention of any player topping another. That's not what it's about. I'm a longtime fan of Beck. I've witnessed many, "Whoa, what did he just do there?" moments at his shows over many years. I have tickets to three of his upcoming shows, so I'm sure I'll have a few more of those moments, to say the least.
There is no competition involved....they are just two extraordinary guitarists playing together and enjoying the ride as well as we do. However, JB is the most impressive guitar player I have ever seen and I am a guitar player..... He is truly unique...one of a kind!!
Did someone come out before the show and announce... Gentlemen, start your guitars? Was this a competition between the two? Just be glad that you had this very rare opportunity to witness two great musicians and friends on the same stage on the same night! The winners, were all in the audience! It's Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck!! It doesn't get much better than that.
Jeff just blew EC out the water, off the planet and out of the stratosphere at this gig. Total mismatch of talents. Thanks to Jeff for giving me a pee break by sending on Joss Stone!!!
Love how Jeff throws in the Purple Haze riff at 2:25 . saw him at the Manchester Apollo last year and I lost my socks because he blew them off my feet with an explosive set of incredible guitar sounds.
This might have been a little "dig" at EC, when the Cream followed Jimi Hendrix at a gig, EC purportedly said "........after seeing that performace (with the guitar) I may as well give up now"
@ericmiller500 could be a shot at Clapton, but I doubt it. Aside from the immense respect Jeff has for Eric, he's said that Big Block is a very Hendrix inspired number, and I've heard him throw in different Hendrix riffs in other performances.
@garmonbozia318 Too true! But I just fancied the thought; as you say there is great respect there and it shows when Jeff looks for the cue from Eric during the sets.
Although some others have suggested Jeff is the greater of the two I still believe this is the mentor and the minor - regardless of their ages and individual abilities.
@garmonbozia318 Why should a Hendrix quote be a shot at Clapton?! EC covered "Little Wing" ever since the DEREK & THE DOMINOES days, he recorded a great version of "Stone Free" on the Hendrix Tribute Album in the 90ies and his live version of "Voodoo Chile" on the live album / DVD with Steve Winwood is killer. Everybody was floored by Jimi at the time. I think by now and at this age both players have overcome any stupid who-is-better-than-who games
@StreetLegal75 -- hee-hee, that is so subtle, i almost missed it !!!
~ whether it was a dig on clapton remains to be seen, ~ and keep in mind jb felt the same way when HE first saw hendrix. in any case JEFF BECK .... IS .......... A ........ GOD !!!!!
aye i was there as well... my first time attending a concert involving the two guitar greats.
beck blew me away with his tone; i was a little disappointed with clapton because i didn't get to see him play layla live, and i thought he looked a bit tired as well. but an awesome show nonetheless!
I think the comments below are a bit harsh. I agree Beck was brilliant and I really enjoyed his set and the work he did on Clapton's. Eric is just a different type of player; he is an accomplished bluesman, steeped in a rich history. Both great, both different, both worth every penny.
I was at the show in Toronto at the ACC and I almost fell asleep during Clapton's set. Jeff Beck will be picking pieces of Clapton's ass off his boots for a long long time! And after the show I had the greatest honor of my life of shaking hands with Beck and taking a picture with him! I've never experienced anything like it.
I totally agree with you. Jeff was fabulous, Clapton was so boring, I went to watch hockey during his set and come right back when Jeff started playing.
