My take on his addiction/recovery issue is that is a construct for artistic purposes,

I am an addict myself currently in recovery and I don't get a genuine vibe whenever he talks about his addiction/recovery I am not saying that he never did drugs but to me he is not and he was never an addict, but I understand that maybe he needed new material to inspire his writing, a new personal drama.
