It was really a no brainer. The Powell doctrine is in direct opposition to McCain's plan to continue a never ending war.

Actually, Powell was the only one in the administration behind closed doors that was lobbying against the invasion, but that would go against the little narrative that you're trying to spin.

Powell was under pressure from the Bush Administration and high ranking individuals in it to give the reports which contributed to the invasion of Iraq. The persons who had no integrity were, and always have been Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, all of whom outranked Powell in every military and political measure. It is a known and established fact that when he gave his presentation to the UN about Iraq collecting uranium, that he himself shortly beforehand said that "This [the report] is Bullshit."

Powell is too smart to run for the presidency. He is no idiot. He understands the scenario and wants no part of the lose/lose situation. What Obama needs to do is to invite Powell into his cabinet once he is elected. I would make Powell sec of State all over again, and give him a chance to correct what he did under Bush, i.e., lying to the UN about WMD. He would also bring a ton of military and foreign relations experience to the cabinet.
