This happend to me last night (the uk) ... was camping in a field and it was a calm warm night .... we heard 2 loud bangs of thunder no rain no nothing... so we got out the tent and stupidly ran for the house ... half way across the field there was a third bang instantly followed by a bolt of lightning just like this one only more brighter and slightly thicker ........ one of the most scariest moments of my life X_X

Yeah I have heard stories of people getting hit by lightning and lived because they had something in metal on them such as a video camera, iv seen a video that was taken by a women and she got struck by lightning while taping and lived... I don't remember why but it had something to do with an earring

You can be 1 foot from where the lightning struck, if the discharge was directed away from you...you would survive. Allbeit, probably burnt, and effected by the static field..and scared shitless.

lol no, magnetic fields don't attract eachother. I think you're confused with particles of opposite charge.

However the magnetic field from the strike can be strong enough to break down any nearby electrical equipment, by inducing a current in the equipments wiring. so camera's can break down from a flash, even indirectly.
