On double play throws from short stop or third base to second base I like to execute a cross over pivot which allows a 2nd baseman with a weak arm to #1.clear the runner #2. have momentum #3 a clear shot during throws to 1st base. I find it much more efficient to split the base in half step on the infield 1st. base side of the base with the left foot & crossover with the right foot which gives me more runner clearance momentum, throwing velocity & closer to 1st.
It depends how the throw from your shortstop or third basemen is. If he throws it to my left I'm able to step across and throw, if its thrown to my right I use the momentum going to my right to step back and make the throw.
The best way to turn a double play as a second baseman if you have time is to get your left foot on the opposite side of the both stepping toward the ball as you catch it, get your right foot plant down and throw. This makes the throw a shorter distance and the time to catch and release the ball much quicker. If you don't have time use step back towards rf or step back toward center. Never use straddle bag unless you are receiving a throw from the catcher on a steal. Ask any college coach.
I do the stepback with one alteration. As I am receiving the throw, unless it is a bad one, I step my right foot back toward right field, then as soon as I catch the ball, I step almost diagonally between first and home and simply use arm strength to get the ball there sidearm. The throw is important, but the transfer and step is everything, that is where the runner will beat you. Plus with mine, I can avoid worrying about the runner getting in the way of the throw or cleating me.
The idea is time it so ur catching the ball as you hit the bag... ur not gonna leave ur position early so you can stand on the bag and then wait for the throw... Should have mentioned that part!
@limes14@limes14 - I'm a dumbass?? Well if ya haven't noticed.. your comment has been removed! Not by me either. So obviously they thought you were wrong! I don't blame them because your comment was nonsense! Your comment was... Don't time it but don't stand at the bag either?? You have no idea obviously! You must be playing a low grade buddy because if you have time to stand on the bag and run on the spot as you suggested then you must be recieving a throw from a young kid or old man!
i play second and the way i usually do it is by timing the ball before its thrown to you by taking studder steps about 2-3 feet away so that i can read the ball after its thrown in case its an off target throw, then i would step over the bag as i catch the ball swipe the bag with my left foot, then throwing the ball as i swipe the bag. everything is in one motion so its really quick.
i play 2nd base and prefer to step across because i throw and avoid the runner all in 1 motion but a few coaches told me to change to the step back those it make a diffrence?
Work constructively on all on all of the pivots, For those with not so strong throwing arms and basically staying out of the runners way with body movement going towards 1st. while cutting down throwing distance to me are excellent procedures to making successful double plays. I prefer the cross over pivot, I know several 2nd. basemen who went from back up status in high school to being excellent D-1 college players by executing cross over pivots.
yeah the only problem with setting up behind behind second base like that is if the second baseman throws a little behind you your going to be off balance, either leading to a weak throw or something in the dirt
i play short stop and personaly i when the ball is hit i round behind second base looking strait at first catch on the bag throw and jump the runner. its not very quick but it gets the job done for me.
this guy is FUCKED UP!! hes way off!! no way in hell he would turn a god damn double play this way, hes gonna get taken out sooo much i dont play much second base but jesus christ i could turn a better dp than this nigga.
With your right foot step to the shortstop and drag your left foot over the bag. When you are catching the ball you should be planting your right foot and then step straight to first base with your left. Timing is everything. If you feel the slide coming jump up with your left foot during or after the throw.
wow dude im 13 and me and my friend made a double play twice in a game, once we missed a double play but we got one out, the next play we got it:), i play 2nd and my friend plays SS and we kick ass at turning it
turn two is really easy. Is not hard like people make it out to be. The easy way for a secound baseman to turn two. Is to put the left foot on top of the bag. Then where ever the SS or 3rd throw it. Step towards the throw with your right leg. As you catch it. Youre left leg will be coming off the bag. So you just follow the step off(left leg) and throw to first. Trust me,is the easy way, smooth and it flows.
last one where the ball is throw out, yea stay there and try to make a throw XD, normally catch the ball TAGGGGGG The fucking runner and IF you can still make the throw and still get him out do that, if not dont waste a throw and possible make a bad one and have that runner goto second.
1:00, haha ok yea try to avoid that, ANY RUNNER THAT IS IN THE GAME KNOWS TO ALWAYS PROTECT THE RUNNER COMING TO FIRST WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR DEAD OUT AT SECOND SO YOU MAIN TASK IS TAKING OUT HIS THROW, that means missing the base and sliding into his ankles with metal cleats and takin him out of the game ^^
what a dumbass let that idiot get hit by a real runner and hes gonna break his fucking ankle. what a retard. if you wanna see a real double play look up bill mazeroski
Guys, its pretty clear that this guy is not a coach. He doesn't even explain who he's teaching. Is it kids? If so, what kid can stand in direct line of the base runner, take no steps to first, throw, and jump. Damn that was horrible! I mean, if you were out there having some fun with your buddies, thats cool but as instruction goes that was about a c-
actually for a shortstop and a second baseman you do wait at the bag for the throw. you dont really need a lot of momentum to turn a double play. the reason you dont time the throw like you says is if there is a bad throw then your screwed because your not ready for a bad throw. if your waiting at the bag you can adjust to any throw. but still this guy is terrible
i disagree, wut i think the most affective way is to stand about 2-3 feet befor the bag, wait till the ball is thrown to u and time it correctly then you move toward the bag as the ball is comeing towards you. timing it so you catch the ball right as your foot is sweeping over the bag and throw it down to first. thats what i do when i play short
There's a big difference from how you turn double plays at short and second base. At second, it isn't usually possible to get in position to turn a dp like you can at shortstop. There are a few ways to do it at second, but I think the easiest and most accurate way is to just stand half a step in back of second, as you're catching the ball, step so that your left foot is touching the back of second, and then throw. It gets you a little bit of momentum. Runners also can't slide into you.
here, u might not like, but how bout this, run up to the bag, bout 5 ft away, time the throw, then as the ball is coming and ur comming to bag, catch the ball when u touch bag and come in and throw, if u get what i mean, u have momentum for throw, u are out of runners way, and have a clear shot to first, have succesfully dun many times myself :)
i dont agree with this one certain position in stance but, yours is way off.... you are not describing what foot touches where and what arm is positioned as well!!!! hell!!!!!!!!! if i was a u tuber i would present the u-tubing industry the fundamentals of how it is correctly done.
as a professional ballroom dancing instructor, youll be surprised how regular everyday movement whether in dancing or pivoting while walking around a corner or in baseball, does enhance natural movement. It is convincing and is natural and makes perfect sense based on my experience.
the instructor is a hack. check out the video of him taking ground balls at shortstop. amateurish. the cross over he executes is simply wrong. he wouldnt get a gig for my team, glenelg, in the south australian baseball league. that is why his videos are "merely" on you tube, ie, no credentials.
Isn't that a plate he's turning the double play on?

This is the rest of my comment below.
It is also of the utmost importance to jockey in and square up to third base while
taking the throw in order to set up for making a good balanced throw to 1st. base.
