At the same time Laika was sent to space, Nuclear tests of both super powers used many animals cruelly and injured people as well. Think of lab animal experiments too. We still suffer each other's cruelties, lies, and great murders, like in the US invasion of Iraq. We are most barbarous, though we like to pretend otherwise. Laika's pain was just one footnote in this history. A minor one relative to cruelty. Probably a result of the presures of the Soviet vs. U.S. space race of the time.

I disagree. Humans have come far enough - perhaps too far already. There are too many people on the planet. Either way, there is no need to experiment any futher on animals for any reason. Im not advocating animal experimentation =o ... but, Gozencos claim or statement or quote at the end of this peice is really outrageous. The mission design involved the death of Laika from beggining to end. To say it was without merit or futile is preposterous; Of course it had merit- and Laika became a national hero, unwittingly. Sadly, yes. Laika was the first of many animals to die in the space race. Currently the space shuttle missions (and the ISS if i'm not mistaken) frequently involve animal experiments.
