YOu can say all you want about my marriage, however, civil marriage is a civil right. You don't have to like it or accept it, you can berate it and vote against it, but as civil marriage is a civil rights issue, we will eventually have our rights upheld. Rights trump votes. Civil marriage and civil rights are not only for one man one woman, but for same sex couples as well. Separate but equal does not work under the US constitution. BTW, CA doesn't have civil unions, it has domestic partnerships for any two persons regardless of gender and the rights granted do not equal the rights of marriage. Would you give up civil marriage to domestically partner up? May the courts uphold the US constitution and thwart the tyranny of the majority by repealing prop 8.

CA constitution guarantees equal protection regardless of gender. The courts ruled any two adult persons have a right to marry. To eliminate same sex marriage would require a state constitutional revision: that requires a special constitutional convention and a 2/3 vote by the legislature. A majority cannot vote away something that clearly requires a constitutional revision. Watch the court and legislature for more updates. EOM

So many people don't get that Prop. 8 was already a remnant of a bygone era. The reason it passed was because older, more conservative voters got forced out of their homes and voted yes. If you surveyed any high school or college-- hell, even junior high students felt strongly about it-- you'd notice how overwhelmingly against Prop. 8 they were. So there is hope for the future-- if Prop. 8 does get written into the constitution, I can assure you that people will try to cross it out.

There are enormous differences between men and women, but there are no differences between people of different races. Men and women are inherently different, but blacks and whites (and yellows and browns) are inherently the same. Therefore, any imposed separation by race can never be moral or even rational; on the other hand, separation by sex can be both morally desirable and rational. Separate bathrooms for men and women is moral and rational; separate bathrooms for blacks and whites is not.

Prop 8 removes access to civil marriage for it's citizens. Civil marriage is a civil rights issue and a majority vote cannot take away the rights of a minority. That is why the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as the County of Santa Clara have filed suit and why our governor, a republican has said this should be overturned. The fair alternative will be to only have civil unions for all couples and leave marriage to individual rites and faiths. Rights trump votes!
