  • yeah...ye-yeah, yeah, yeah..lol is that all the interviewer knows how to say?

  • Why is YouTube always out of audio synch?

  • Please marry me

  • Ok guys, tone it down a bit. Esperanza is awesome but she's not a goddess reincarnated on earth. She's flesh and blood like you and I. Take her off that pedestal a lil bit.

  • @youcef it'd be a lot easier to take her off the pedestal if most women, hell most people, weren't so goddamn superficial, vapid, generic, immature, cruel, and just plain unpleasant. she seems like a goddess because most people are so far beneath her. she's got her feet on the ground but the rest of us are rolling around in the mud and decayed carcasses beneath the surface. she's what we all should and could be, but we're too content wallowing in this crap and don't wanna step up.

  • she is a breath of fresh air...i grew up thinking that i had to DUMB down my smart...for my male counter parts

  • @foxkingj pls never DUMB down ur smarts for no one becus God is the one that gave u that talent so u can shine for all to see, just be thankful to God when u rise to the top.

  • Esperanza Spalding TRIUMPHS when it comes to BEAUTY, INTELLIGENCE, and NOVELTY!

  • She the best think that happen to jazz in a long time

  • Simply Beaugtiful!!

What a classy, and talented lady.

  • Esperanza's singing range is just nuts..eventhough she might not think so...she's far beyond her years.

  • @Skyjuice70

    i agree

  • love iiiit <3 :)

  • Wow yes. She's an intellectual after my own heart!

    *~P3AC3~*

  • Is everyone else's audio/video out of sync?

  • love her! : )

  • I like Her.

  • A next-level human being. Period.

  • guapa !

  • I'm gooked on her music right now and she seems lika really nice person

  • shes all round great

  • she's smart

  • i think what shes talking about is mentor and disciple. it is a major practice in nichiren buddhism

  • Yes!!!!! She is so right! Americans nowadays do not raise their kids to be adults! I've said that so many times before. These kids are babied (if that's a word). That r not prepared for adulthood. And they think they love their kids by doing everything for them. So not true. Sorry for the tangent. But I love her! Her music is great!

  • How refreshing! A youngster who understands the true essence of jazz! I love her!

  • Esta niña va a llegar muuuy lejos. Lo tiene todo~! Felicidades Esperanza, you are a great musician, a role model, and an awesome human being!

  • this chick is my new bass hero...i am a 19 year old upcoming female bassist, and the heroes are becoming closer to me. First Vic Wooten, then Divinity Roxx, now Esperanza, eventually i will become my own hero...

  • Good Luck : )

  • SHE IS ON DAT LEVEL

  • awesome fro

  • Fantastic musician, though the interviewer sounds absolutely bored by her youthful enthusiasm.

  • I'd do anything to take her out on a date!

  • i just love her!

  • she's one in a trillion. the majority of the girls at my school waste their time taking dumb pictures for "myspace" and listen mainstream rap. they're no where near the maturity level Esperanza is at.

  • I fine observation.

  • its almost as if american popular culture is breeding this kind of dumb ass empty and materialistic women. you see, she's involved with the arts, and this gives her a different aura entirely

  • @PUENTENATOR17

That's why Esperanza's a prodigy. They make it all see so simple. I'm glad she's who she is and she's here doing her thing now. Big Up's to her.

  • I am in love!!!...

  • i also wanna marry her. after her concert in bim huis i felt realy dizzy and i just thought about how can a woman be so perfect.

  • la amo groso

  • Amazing. Now THAT'S a sexy woman!

  • SHIT! I know!

  • love what she says! she is really focused.

  • such wisdom from you E! thanks for keeping it real and not playing it safe.

JAZZ! THE NOT SO FINAL FRONTIER

  • With the state of talentless, tone def, auto-tuned, overproduced artists in music today.... She is a breath of fresh-air that the music industry needs. She's the kick in the ass that music needs. I wish her much success. It also doesn't hurt that she's nice on the eyes too ;)

  • this girl is soooo smart...every little young singer should be forced to watch this before they go shake their behind somewhere.

  • i saw her at the smallest most intimate club in NYC with 6 people there. Cachaca. i hate to say this cause it seems so bad , but dude, I wanna marry her too. It doesn't get any better.

  • I WANT TO MARRY HER TOO..

  • I seriously want to marry this girl after watching this video. Everything she says is right on, she's good looking, and close to my age.

  • sorry dude..my boy already claimed her...he said he saw her first...LOL

  • I refuse to beleive it.

  • god she's fucking gorgeous

    and also really smart...

  • Esperanza is a TRUE inspiration to me. She is so young and true to the spirit of the music. It gives me hope that we as young honest musicians have a chance to showcase real heart and soul based music.

  • She's mesmerizing.

  • esperanza i love you. im in love. smart talented sista. where do you find a woman like that at?////

  • thank you

  • what's that song playing in the beginning?

  • very talented musician, and also a very pretty lady

  • i love what she has to say about what jazz was when folk where dancing in the clubs & at concert halls - not just sitting there like - oh we paid our money & we've come to see this "refined" art form - now entertain us! as musicians we feed off of not only those we play with onstage but as well those we're playing to. just like in the black church with the call & response.

    love & light ya'll :-)

  • did this interviewr get a chance to ask a question? other than yeah yeah ...she is very

    itelligent.......jazz newbie....hopefully a

    legend in the making....

  • Look I am having a fantastic conversation with my friend Ed White and mentioned to him to go to this site, all of a sudden that NIGGA' hangs up on me and tells me "Gots to go, she is too hot, I cant speak to you right now" can you believe that jack, he dumped me for Sweet Esperanza, I guess it not so bad, I would have done the same, the girl is INCREDIBLE, pretty, talented and just not enough of what one can get. What I am saying is that I dont feel so bad after all, Viva Esparanza

  • What I think is cool about her also is that she plays the bass, which usually is an instrument only males play and she makes it feminine. She has a very beautiful voice and sounds very intelligent -- I would almost say mature. She talks about being selfreliant which is almost foreign for at lot of women.

    Jesper 28/Denmark

  • She is so cool.

  • I'm not sure if her garrulous rash statement of hiphop being not "real" music is simply her way of expressing it as something less sophisticated or refering its pejorative/commercialized elements not truely representing reality? but isn't that why we're fasinated about music? its ability to portrait both reality and superficial, mundane and sublime? I dimetrically disagree such notion of unreal music, each organized sound works has its rhetoric and eloquency thats genuinely artificial and real!

  • I think she was referring to it's commercialized elements which is why she mentioned the origins of jazz it was people doing what they wanted to do not caring about other peoples opinion and most modern rap is the opposite thing

  • I think what she was gettin at is that in today's society Hip Hop as a whole is becoming fabricated as opposed to it's original induction into the music industry. At first it was a group of people speaking about their struggles and experiences in life over various beats and chords. Whereas now it's reg folk who REALLY didn't struggle or hardly want for nothing PERPETRATING A FRAUD.

  • prodigy is exact. the song called "I know you know" is just excellent. yeah plenty of americans love jazz. calm down. my dad raised me on it in the 90's and although it's not my major musical focus now, I still can manage to enjoy it.

  • absolutely astounding ...fresh...challenging as well as loving lyrics...best new stuff since i first saw jerry garcia. i am blown away!!!

  • This woman is incredible. I am completely in love with Esperanza's mind. I can't wait to get her album. She's correct when she said. The art of music is dying. People in the U.S.A. don't respect Jazz like the European do. As a Bassist I can appreciate her statement.

  • Sorry but thats a stupid nationalist generalization.

Americans love jazz. I just came from a Jazz show of only local bands and I live in a small town.

  • cd sales, download and tickets sales don't reflex your stupid opinion. The numbers don't lie.

  • Opinion? I'm American and I love jazz, and I know tons of people who do. I think it's silly you're trying to compare a whole continent to a country in record sales.

  • I'm an American Also, I just got back from Memphis, Tenn Jazz Concert. There is no doubt that America loves Jazz, but I bet you the average music fan in Europe and Asia could tell you more about Count Basie, Miles Davis,Marsalis and Herbie Hancock than most Americans. Our Music Programs are not receiving the funding. The Music Reading programs are dying slowly

  • I think it's very important to be into all kinds of music. It broadens your outlook on everything. I'm 16 and play jazz, but I can get so inspired by hearing the exact opposite.

Anyway, Esperanza is really something. I'm not really talking about her age or stuff like that, but her attitude towards her love, music. Doesn't matter WHAT age someone is, you just don't see that too much, anymore. But at least I know I'm not alone. She's gonna impact the jazz world hard very soon.

  • I'm going to meet her this year when I go up to Berkeelee

  • for dnp97001, just to name a few you should check out some of my favorites on Youtube;

    Cyne

    Brother Ali

    Nujabes

Tribe Called Quest some of Lupe Fiasco's songs are coo like "Kick Push" and "Paris, Tokyo"

    oh yea check out

"Make You Feel That Way" -Blackalicious

  • Hi, thanks for the list. I just saw Cyne's "Haze" from beginning to end. There was a recurring tune in the background, but I didn't find the whole thing that interesting. I'm not a Jazz enthusiast, but when I hear Jazz, my impression is hey, this requires real musical talent. Jazz guys have to read music and make music on genuine instruments. I don't get that same impression from hip hop.

  • clearly you're musical selections are too narrow to realize the beauty in REAL hip-hop. you don't know real hip-hop and that's sad because you're missing out on a whole world of poetry, rhythm, and a beautiful struggle that is uplifting.

  • Give me some examples of real hip hop and I'll check it out. I'll keep an open mind.

  • Along with some of the artists listed up there, check out De La Soul, Queen Latifah, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Will Smith's solo stuff, Drake, Little Brother, Mos Def. There are lots of others, but once you get into a few you really branch out (like I did).

  • I have the same attitude about rap and hip hop that she has, i.e., it isn't real music. Music should be uplifting. It should give the next generation hope for something better.

  • Hip-hop is real music. Maybe not the popular crap nowadays but that's not all hip-hop is.

  • how old is she?

  • 23.

  • she is beautiful.

  • daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnn she can yak! but she is wonderful

  • Hahaha, that's what I was thinking. She just looks like the type of person that could talk about anything all day. She's really cool, though.

  • i saw her last summer in copenhagen, it was an awesome performance, and GOD she is so fucking pretty

  • im in love! she is all that, her music blows me away!

  • This woman is Real. She is a gifted gift herself and I hope she goes very far. I mean that whole singing while playing the bass (scatting while playing the bass)... Forget about it...! I was done!

  • I like her too.

  • She is not for losers :) Cwebb, she could talk to you :]

  • i would marry this woman

  • u gonna hav to fight me lol

  • Me too, she was a blast to go to school with.

  • OHH man!
