Accompaniment playing is a difficult art,playing lots of chatak te-tes and tirkits are impressive enough but needs to be followed with some real laykaris and complex patterns,only a good Tabla player can judge that,I aint one.Listen to Ustad Zakir playing with Ustad Vilayat Khan or Pandit Jasraj and you can follow the theka nice and clear and he does not disturb the bhav of the Raga.The theka is so sweet it actually adds to the bhav of the Raga,instead of fighting to be the loudest.

There is a respect system in India and our ICM world, which seems to be going...when in presence of maha Gurus like Shaihid-ji one should show respect and not be showey in your playing. Students who are not aware of this civilised behavior will attempt to play solo in front of greats like Zakir-ji. I have seen this happen, especially with people who have not been brought up with this "respect the greats" culture.

i just hope the table Player was aware of the fact that he was at the presence of perhaps that greatest sitarist of all time. Best of luck to him. With Riaz, i am positive he would be very good.
