No offence, my friend, but...I do not think that this is what Schubert had in mind. I agree; singers should not be singing lieder like opera, and it should always be a personal, intimate rendition. However, tempi are meant to be stretched and approximated according to feeling, unless otherwise noted, and words imbued with personal meaning. Music is not the notes on the page but the notes that have left the page and become art. As far as I am concerned, these notes are still on the page.
