The caste system that existed prior to immigratin of aryans was indeed a co-dependent system however as we know from history the 'settlers' (arabs and persians included) all came escaping war and from societies that surived by ruling and labour. Hindu Vedas DO NOT sanction caste system in its present form. The present form of caste system in India is a twisted and decayed version of the original idea. The ancient caste system was just a classification based on abilities and inclination. friend, actually 'caste by birth' really only refers to one's ancestory/heritage (eg in ancient India, the son of a goldsmith used to become a goldsmith & his son in turn would inherit his father's occupation of goldsmithing & so on - hence, on a social level, they would all be from the 'goldsmith caste' - it was the same with all other professions - priest, teacher, king, farmer etc).

and in the 'REAL' sense, every human being's (real) 'caste' is determined by his deeds/karma, not by his 'birth'.In the real vedic sense for eg, a 'brahmin' is a person who is spiritually enlightened...one's birth has nothing to do with this.
