if margaret's mother can afford to call a doctor in so often, why didn't margaret think of sending a doctor to bessy for once? would've done poor bessy more good than margaret's just sitting there and patting her on the shoulder...
@olooshia There was no cure for fluff lung (the sickness Bessy has). The best Margaret could do was make Bessy comfortable. Of course, it also meant she could have sent for a doctor to give her some meds to help her sleep or something...
It is all a bunch of BS, you know they will end up together, from the firt encounter, it was a given...Eliz. Gaskell had that old-fashioned sense of the heroine having to hate the hero at first sight but really she loved him, of course...
Thorton's talk with his mom pre-proposal makes him seem so vulnerable and sweet, and it makes it even more unbearable when he's turned down! I understand her reason's for rejecting him, but still...with his magnificence before her, I can't understand how she said no!
@socertiger13 And beautifully acted. When I read the book, Richard Armitage was exactly how I pictured Thornton. So when I saw this I was like, "OMG!! That IS Thornton!!" They both did a wonderful job in these roles, as well as all the other actors.
Of course he is responsible for his workers dying! And she was quite right to refuse him.
I have not read the novel and I can see that most probably they will end together but I wish they wouldn't. And it is not just the fact that he insults her, you know. I can see that he is supposed to be the 'good capitalist' but do you really think he is that good anyway? Have you noticed all these hungry and sick children around? How dashing a gentleman can seem to you when he profits from their misery?
@KarinReason So because he wasn't out on the street trying to solve the problems of every man, woman and child he's less than worthy? He ran a mill and paid a wage; the workers were right to join together and protect themselves from being exploited but it's a two-way street - overpay the workers above earnings and you go bankrupt, then no one eats.
And "capitalists" are speculators; Thornton was not one of those. Not even close.
@ladygreenlife I know that. All I was saying is that they have to smooth eachothers edges. Margaret is quite abrupt and rude on more than one occasion. And I agree that she had every right to refuse and he behaved like an idiot. I love Margaret and ofcourse she loves Thornton. Those 2 were meant to be.
the thing with the mixed signals is such crap, I'm sorry to say, but just because you smile at someone and asnwer them nicely, it doesn't mean you're in love with them. and i agree that the mother sort of pushed him to propose, maybe if she hadn't told him that, he would have postponed. but in those times it was unconceivable for a woman to do something like that.
but he is rude...he doesn't listen to anything she says and misinterprets everything, when she asks him to talk to the people and try to be reasonable...can you imagine being married to someone like that? The question is why does he actually love her? He doesn't respect her way of thinking anyway.
and yes, i think her no is definitely a reaction to what she's overheard in his house...that would definitely make me refuse(: at least for the moment
even if she was attracted to him, getting married to a man who sees everything that is important to you as trifle, who despises your friends ("you imagine them to be your friends") and doesn't actually understand you would be wrong, definitely doomed to failure. Neither one understands the other, and they both hurt each other. It's exactly as in Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Darcy tells Elizabeth that he loves her despite her flaws, being poor and having a shameful family...
@fdtk77 Yes, I agree. Everyone keeps calling her judgemental but so is he/all the miltoners. Besides which Elizabeth was truly mistaken, Margaret is in fact right. If you think of both sides of the argument- Thornton might be good and fair for a master but it doesn't blot out the fact that the workers are living just on the breadline.
Respond to this video... Margaret and Thornton don't understand eachother completely. They symbollise the break down in communication throughout the whole book/film. He dismisses her views absolutely. She would never have won his respect or vice versa if she had accepted him then.
A gentle spirit is not the equivalent of a weak personality. Clearly modeled by such heroines as Margaret Hale and Elizabeth Bennet. Striking personalities, capable of great personal strength, but still possessing the ability to act as gentlewomen.
SHE is the snub, narrow-minded superior-feeling one... She's Darcy in petticoats, no less ! Her upbringing doesn't allow her to see Thornton's real feelings. Just because he is in trade, can't talk about poetry and philosophy doesn't mean he is unable to love her ! He is just too blunt at that moment ... But having seen the movie a hundred times, we all know it' going to get better !!!!!!!!
Wow, she was harsh! I agree this reminds me of pride and prejudice, but i don't think thornton is like darcy. Darcy totally snubbed Miss Bennet in the beginning of the movie, he had it coming to him. Furthermore, she had been biased by gossip, she thought she had every reason to think he was a beast. But Thornton, on the other hand, hasn't been as rude. Yeah, she saw his "bad" side, but he's pretty much been kind to her personally.
@anitadoubleoseven I think she's caught up in the tempest of her own feelings. I'm sorry, but all the 19th century hotties, Thornton, Darcy, they both insult the woman they love; Thornton tells Margaret that the workers deserve to be set upon by soldiers and that she is low enough to mix with the workers, and darcy insults the 'inferiority of lizzy's circumstances' and forces her sister and bingley apart!! They need to do something about their proposal methods and quickly!!!
i know we all say, :why aren't men like that these days"...i hate to say it, but why should men be as wonderful as Mr Thornton if we do not act like the graceful and gentle women we are meant to be, that is act like margets and elizabeths. a man will act like a gentleman if there is a lady for him to serve. so girls, let's start acting the part!!!
@hijalinda Thumbs up x 1,000!!! Imagine Mr. Thornton's reaction if he read some of these drooling, shameless comments! I get a laught out of his reaction anyway. 100% agree with you!
@hijalinda that's all in good in theory and I agree you have a valid point- fair is fair. But there is a reason our attitudes have change.
In those days women didn't need to accomplish much by 21st century standards. They would act frail and shy so that they could catch the attention of a good suitor- & that's how the acquired rank. Today, we have to be confident, strong, and have a will of our to be competitive in the business world, and establish a name for ourselves.
@hijalinda That's honestly one load of bullsh.t. Men should treat women with the respect we deserve (vice-versa also). our behaviour, proper or not in the eyes of some, should not be an issue. Sexist crap.
@hijlaa I agree, I have been honorable and lady like ,and you will still come across guys who mistreat, and disrespect either way. Alot of the times women are mistreated first which results in such behavior.
@hijalinda You are absolutely right. I will act like a lady with her occasional slip ups when I do sports. But how else can I expect a man to be a gentleman with me if I am not a lady myself.
In my own opinion, Thornton loves Margaret cause she's exactly the kind of person he wants to be, morally upright and caring. Course' he can't act that way cuz of his upbringing & occupation, so instead he acts cruel and cold and hates himself for it. Now cuz Margaret's morally upright, she can't love him because he's cruel & cold, so she won't accept his proposal.
To me, It just seems like a doomed situation of unrequited love and self-righteousness.
He is a slight idiot.. He does the same thing Darcy does with Lizzy.. Insults her and THEN proposes... AS IF she is gonna accept him... stupid woman...
He is a slight idiot.. He does the same thing Darcy does with Lizzy.. Insults her and THEN proposes... AS IF she is gonna accept him... stupid woman...
Personally, I find Margaret's comments about the workers and the strike way more offensive than Thornton's. After all, what business is it of hers to tell him what he ought to do in matters of his own business? I find her officious. There is a difference between moral absolutes and cultural differences of opinion. She doesn't know what she's talking about. So first she tells him how to run his life and then refuses to be a part of it.
Okay, I know that it's hard to imagine refusing a proposal from Mr. Thornton, but in Margaret's defense he does say some PRETTY offensive things. He insults Margaret by saying "Oh that's right, you imagine workers to be your friends," he suggests that the striking workers *deserve* to suffer even though Margaret clearly disagrees with him, etc. Not exactly the kind of romantic talk that would fire ME up about the idea of marrying a man...
ummmm this movie is awesome! seriously i have been grinning and squealing the entire time like a 12 year old girl. why cant men be this passionate today?
At the beginning I was unsure about Mr Thornton, but after the "I don't want to possess you - I wish to marry you because I love you" line, how could I not love him??
whats with these 19th century writers??!!! are they trying to elevate our expectations of men......DAMN IT MR. DARCY AND MR. THORNTON......YOU MADE EVERY OTHER GUY INCOMPARABLE >.< LOL
I don't get the "color of fruit" comment. On first watching, I thought, "It must be something from the book that needs further explanation." Then, upon reading the book, I found that it wasn't even mentioned. I don't get it. Any insights?
@47thUsername Yeah, that line always confuses me too! I think he is just trying to make small talk because he is super nervous. It shows that he is a human instead of the machine she likes to think he is. The second time he mentions the fruit I guess it is because of his shock. But yeah, that is so confusing
@LivingintheShire The closest thing I can figure out is that they are trying to show how in the book that he was constant even after she refused him. I think he had been sending fruit to Mrs. Hale because the doctor told him it would be good for her condition. After Margaret refused him, he continued sending the fruit, but who the heck knows?! I'd love the screenwriter's opinion. Do you know her? LoL
@sleepysian Thanks! It definitely explains the writer's motivation, and I can easily believe Thornton eager of making a little small talk to ease the tension. Wish they had left that bit in though. Though the comment about his mother and sister does seem to slow down the pacing of the scene, so I don't mind that being deleted.
"please stop" Thornton "Excuse me" lol as a man you never wanna hear the words "Please stop" when your talking about your feelings for a woman. That was just brutal on thornton.
Know that I may seem old fashioned, but I am 17 and I love period dramas, like this or sense and sensability. In fact i wish that i was in that time. And also, there was another sexy but at 1:25
i don't what is wrong with me but i love it when two who have feeling for each other fight and argue....it just shows the passion awwwwww my lord i am really loving mr. thornton..
Gah, Richard Armitage was made to play John Thornton. That proposal scene always gets to me. So heartbreaking for him. He laid his heart out for her and she stomped all over it. The scene before with his mother when he reveals his vulnerabilities makes that proposal scene that much gut-wrenching to watch.
She is lying when she says "I do not like you and I never have." Too much pride. If I were him, I would force her to look into my eyes and say that again !!! Your mouth can lie, but your eyes CAN'T !!!!!!!!!
@britneythao Actually, in the book, it is very clear that she truly doesn't yet like him romantically. It takes a good deal of time after his confession for her to notice him and all the good he does for her family and others and THEN she starts to like him.
OMAIGOOOOOOD. Im not a romantic person. AT ALL. But this. This GOT ME. Goose-fucking-bumps as if I was sitting on a giant wheel an Im UP! If you know what I mean. :S
"I do not like you. I never have" .... ouch ! That was really hard. I can't imagine how hurt he should be after this. How can you tell things like this to a such handsome man ?!
@TheAllisP yes...I've wondered many times too. She must've been made of sterner stuff. I'd have just gone "oh. marry me??? of course!!! yes! yes! yes!"
I feel like knocking my head against a wall yelling stupid stupid stupid! She is crazy. He wouldn't have gotten past, "I'm at a loss for words' cause I would've been in his arms!
" my friend betty is dying" and of course that's my fault too" that was sooo funny! she must be out of her mind rejecting such a man! Mr. Thornton, ill marry you..
"I spoke to you about my feelings because I love you. I had no thought for your reputation." - I love that line. It manages to be both insulting and endearing.
@catdebo7 you're wrong: in the 19th century, there were no such things as "wrights" for the workers. In fact the work conditions were awful (that's why Karl Marx developped his communist theory). Mr Thornton is the most human and the one of the few who plays fair
@vegetables88 I don't know...I like collared up Thorny. He's just so pretty in his stiffness. Men in long black coats are just so sexy. But then, maybe a bath, wet hair and all lol!
Nothing against the miniseries and CERTAINLY nothing against Richard Armitage, but the proposal in the book is so much better . . . this feels like a mix between what North and South and Pride and Prejudice. Also, in the book he says that he thinks he loves her more than any man has ever loved any woman and she says that it's blasphemous, which cracks me up.
And I have to say that I do miss the "brilliant smile" that Thornton is supposed to have. He's considerably less like Darcy.
to those who think john thornton is a sissy/mama's boy etc, cmon folks...remember what he's been thru- near destitution, working at a young age, no father, what have you, and his mom's has been right beside him (his sister, i think you'll agree, is useless). 'course he looks to his momma for comfort and advice. she loves him fiercely and been there for him when he wasn't a posh (ish) person wearing cravats and all that. now back to drooling at richard armitage.
he is HAWT..and no matter which era i m born in, i wudn't hesitate one second to say "WHAT THE HECK! YES YES YES!!" to this handsome man... and i don't care how dumb i may sound here...for i'd give up anything to get such chivalrous and noble hero as mr.thornton or mr.darcy in my life!!
gee this woman, all she wants is to tell men they are not worthy.

hijalinda 6 months ago 105
@hijalinda Thumbs up x 1,000!!! Imagine Mr. Thornton's reaction if he read some of these drooling, shameless comments! I get a laught out of his reaction anyway. 100% agree with you!

@hijalinda but margaret and elizabeth both tried to break free of the roles of "gentle lady" forced on them by their time's society...

@hijalinda I completely agree!
icesk8ergal1123 5 months ago
@hijalinda that's all in good in theory and I agree you have a valid point- fair is fair. But there is a reason our attitudes have change.
In those days women didn't need to accomplish much by 21st century standards. They would act frail and shy so that they could catch the attention of a good suitor- & that's how the acquired rank. Today, we have to be confident, strong, and have a will of our to be competitive in the business world, and establish a name for ourselves.
cassandrapowers 5 months ago 5
@hijalinda That's honestly one load of bullsh.t. Men should treat women with the respect we deserve (vice-versa also). our behaviour, proper or not in the eyes of some, should not be an issue. Sexist crap.
hijlaa 4 months ago 3
@hijlaa I agree, I have been honorable and lady like ,and you will still come across guys who mistreat, and disrespect either way. Alot of the times women are mistreated first which results in such behavior.
QueenAkasha23 4 months ago 2
@hijalinda You are absolutely right. I will act like a lady with her occasional slip ups when I do sports. But how else can I expect a man to be a gentleman with me if I am not a lady myself.

@hijalinda firstly you never lived in this time...stop comparing a book to reality!

Wow first time ever seeing this movie. I regret to have passed up this movie everytime I saw but damn is it ever good! This such an amazing movie!
tinkertoes1000 6 months ago
Okay, I know that it's hard to imagine refusing a proposal from Mr. Thornton, but in Margaret's defense he does say some PRETTY offensive things. He insults Margaret by saying "Oh that's right, you imagine workers to be your friends," he suggests that the striking workers *deserve* to suffer even though Margaret clearly disagrees with him, etc. Not exactly the kind of romantic talk that would fire ME up about the idea of marrying a man...

I don't get the "color of fruit" comment. On first watching, I thought, "It must be something from the book that needs further explanation." Then, upon reading the book, I found that it wasn't even mentioned. I don't get it. Any insights?
47thUsername 7 months ago in playlist North and South 3
@47thUsername Yeah, that line always confuses me too! I think he is just trying to make small talk because he is super nervous. It shows that he is a human instead of the machine she likes to think he is. The second time he mentions the fruit I guess it is because of his shock. But yeah, that is so confusing
LivingintheShire 7 months ago
@LivingintheShire The closest thing I can figure out is that they are trying to show how in the book that he was constant even after she refused him. I think he had been sending fruit to Mrs. Hale because the doctor told him it would be good for her condition. After Margaret refused him, he continued sending the fruit, but who the heck knows?! I'd love the screenwriter's opinion. Do you know her? LoL
47thUsername 7 months ago in playlist North & South
@47thUsername The answer is in a deleted scene, which is available on Youtube, just type North and South deleted scenes, easy to find
sleepysian 7 months ago
@sleepysian Thanks! It definitely explains the writer's motivation, and I can easily believe Thornton eager of making a little small talk to ease the tension. Wish they had left that bit in though. Though the comment about his mother and sister does seem to slow down the pacing of the scene, so I don't mind that being deleted.

mo95261 9 months ago 2
Gah, Richard Armitage was made to play John Thornton. That proposal scene always gets to me. So heartbreaking for him. He laid his heart out for her and she stomped all over it. The scene before with his mother when he reveals his vulnerabilities makes that proposal scene that much gut-wrenching to watch.

britneythao 9 months ago in playlist North and South 5
@britneythao Actually, in the book, it is very clear that she truly doesn't yet like him romantically. It takes a good deal of time after his confession for her to notice him and all the good he does for her family and others and THEN she starts to like him.

catdebo7 10 months ago 3
@catdebo7 you're wrong: in the 19th century, there were no such things as "wrights" for the workers. In fact the work conditions were awful (that's why Karl Marx developped his communist theory). Mr Thornton is the most human and the one of the few who plays fair
msinvincible2000 10 months ago 4
I've said it before, I'll say it again: the only thing that could make this movie better would be a scene with a shirtless Thornton. *sigh*
