This is straight killing! Art Porter was one of the best! If you are in Washington, DC on 1/3/12 there is an Art Porter & George Howerd tribute show at Blues Alley 8pm & 10pm!
Look me up on facebook my name is arrington my-work porter or Tumblr - arrington321.tumblr.com im 18yrs old, please checkout out my drawings and give me your honest opinions.... OH YA CHECKOUT MY CHANNEL (to all my g's and beautiful queens haha)
Someone who have a clip from ''Lay your hands on me'' live? It's just the sickest song on the earth B) I think Art Porter could be the King of Smooth Jazz, if he just lived! RIP.
I came upon Art Porter's tune, "Lay Your Hands on Me" by accident while driving on 580 east in Oakland, CA in 1999 on the jazz station. I quickly ran to the nearest record store and found, "Texas Hump," "Lake Shore Drive," and many other CDs. Upon my discovery I found out of his untimely death. Although, it saddens me to hear of his death, but his music lives on today. Truly a great artist.
What a PERSONALITY! Truly one of the world's best. Makes me proud to be from Little Rock, Arkansas. Everyone of his siblings are phenomenal musicians. Not to mention the awesome legend and patriarch of the family, Art Porter Sr.
Art Porter was a client of mine for car service when he would fly in to do some recording during '94 and '95. He was very nice and layed back. I managed to get him to autograph all of my cd's i had at the time before his passing and he loved it. He was on his way to be one of the very best Smooth Jazz and Jazz saxaphonists of this era. I am very glad and proud to have met him and have all of his recordings. He is very talented. I hear some Eric Dolphy when he plays. He is truly missed.
Not long before this Art was appearing regularly at a neighborhood bar in Waukegan, Illinois. His sound was less Sanborn-influenced, the solos more reflective of the tradition of Bird, Stitt, Cannonball and Dolphy. But you can still hear a lot of that tradition even in this more pop, jazz-rock setting. And he was obviously enjoying not just playing the music but playing it for lots of appreciative listeners.
What happened to him? I mean...how did he die? What a lost. He hast alot of musical ideas stored on him. Some Musicians have 1gig or 2gig of music stored in them he has about 60gigs or more.
He was awesome. I miss him very much. Hard to believe that it's been almost 12 years since he was taken from us. God bless him & his widow Barbie...they are together again. God bless his two sons as well.
ive listened to many sax players in my time, alfonzo blackwell, wayman tisdale the list goes on but let me tell ya art your one of the best in your own way!!
