because Doherty has a terrible reputation. maybe there has been addictions before, like John Lennon, Keith Richards, and lots of other guys but John Lennon was loved before people found out about his addictions, they decided to keep doin like they dont see it. Doherty was first really known FOR his addictions. people have pride, theyre not gonna buy "the junkie"'s song.

The problem with a lot of addicts is that the drugs warp their perception in such a way that they don't realise they have a problem and can even think the drug makes their life better. They use the drug to escape from reality and eventually, being high becomes a "normal" state for them...
