Sun-Ra said that one of his main influences was the great band leader "Fletcher Henderson". In fact, I remember one concert where he di the first 5 minutes of Henderson's stuff, before slowly going 'from in to out,..... to far out. So it stands to reason, that even if many folks might not have understood where he was coming from,..... he certainly know, not only where he was coming from,... but also where he was going, and where he was taking his music.
check out the documentary , a joyful noise, and listen how john gilmore(he taught some of ra s concepts to coltrane) was astounded when he realized how musically advanced ra was and compared him to monk and bird and felt he had even PASSED them !!!! schizophrenic my ass, this man was a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!
european animation , i think you are right. i also feel american society kills the creativity in us by demanding MORE OF THE SAME...when something here in the U.S.. is successful, whatever it is, i.e., music, clothing or even toothpaste mass imitation follows.Translation: its more important to be successful than creative....Sun ra , thankfully never bought into that lol
When I think that this was recorded in the 50's, I can't comprehend what went through his mind when creating this wonderful music. Coltrane wasn't even
Excentric or not, musically Sun Ra absolutely knew what he was doing. Sometimes you find some Sun Ra stuff with bit sand pieces that were 10 years ahead of its time or more, in the sense of antedating trends. But then something utterly far out follows. This refusal to stick to a format that can be easily filed, the refusal to work according to the music business's rules, that is something I love Sun Ra for.
After several weeks of Sun Ra in a class I'm taking, I'm still not sure if he was totally insane or ahead of the curve. I think maybe both. Like a lot of ground-breakers, he had some pretty wild stuff in his head... but he really took jazz in a new direction and DID something with his music.
@carimcaskill You could say he is a schizophrenic, but the one part that doesn't fit the definition of schizophrenic is that Sun Ra was successful. Someone who is mentally ill can't function in society, he found a way to function in a society that has lost all beauty and good in life.
You could walk around in this for a whole afternoon. He should be hailed as the genius that he is,but I'm kind of glad he's not. Some things are better kept as a secret.
i give high praise to RA because as a fellow musician, i know how hard it is to sound original and not like another card board cut-out. this brother was clearly light years ahead of us....
@blacknuss6 I must agree with you, originality is what's missing in every genre of music these days, do people still know what the definition of "music" is?
@blacknuss6 I'm reminded of a discussion I had one time about different ways to dance. I talked about dancing in water, dancing with bare socks as a scratch dance on a treadmill, and a couple others. After that conversation I concluded that most people who find it hard to be original do so because they did something in a very particular way that led to no results and were unable to open their mind to the unique possibilites which ought to be easy to obtain to begin with.
I think organists ougth to stay in the church witk all them priests, bishops, the pope and the holy man himself. The organ - i's definitely NOT fit as a jazzinstrument Not even the Count can make me happy when he plays that f-cking instrument!
where you've read that? I remember a blind test with Davis listening to a Sun ra's piece and saying something bad about it, but i'm absolutely certain that it was'nt Sun song
Sun Ra's Stellar Light Arkestra. Remarkable music: at once far out and very dated, like a radio play from the 1950s. I don't feel much, but thanks for posting.
That man is forward.

So this was recorded 1 year after Bird died. Amazing. Just when I thought I had the M.O. of a decade, I find that I was way off.

is this record remastered? sounds too good to be made back in the 50's :)))) or more likely Ra really has been light years ahead =)))

Maybe you should try eating some mushrooms. That might help you to decide.

@sagedemos there is no need to ingest any of that to know a celestial sound when you hear it -- keep your mind clean
