In Surah 4 verse 3 it says that you can marry up to 4 but you have to treat them equally, but it then says that if you fear that you can't treat them equally then only marry one. And later it says that it is impossible to treat them equally so just marry one! BTW polygamy is also allowed in Mormonism, a branch of Christianity.
@aish1990 - (1) 1400 years ago, polygamy was the social norm; it wasn’t unusual for a man (of any religion or culture) to have multiple wives and women/men did not feel uncomfortable in a polygamous relationship because they were conditioned to think of it as “normal”. The richer the man, the more wives he had! Today, monogamy is the social norm and majority of us have been socially conditioned to view polygamy as unusual; thus we are less accepting towards a polygamous relationship.

These days it is uncommon for people to choose to be polygamous.1400 years ago, it was uncommon for people to choose to be monogamous.
@aish1990 - (3) 1400 years ago, when Islam was first established and people only began to follow it, the Muslim men could have chosen monogamy. However, would that have been a wise choice? In that initial phase, their goal was to spread the teachings of Islam (which includes treatment of women with respect & give them their own rights). Polygamy was the fastest way to spread Islam.
@aish1990 - (4) So how to women benefit from all this?! In accordance with the teachings of Islam, they gain the right to receive inheritance, they don’t give dowry (ie. Get “sold”), she can choose to run her own business & keep the money she earns, and she also gets the same education that a man receives. Had she married a non-Muslim man, she would still be in a polygamous relationship & she wouldn’t receive any of the benefits that Muslim women at that time received.
@aish1990 - (5) Would I want a polygamous relationship? No, I wouldn’t, because as a 21st century woman, polygamy is very uncommon (and thus, unusual/uncomfortable) to me. The need to spread Islam through polygamy is also not as necessary anymore, so I don’t feel the need to be polygamous. If I chose to be monogamous, in no way does my status as a Muslim woman diminish (compared to a woman who chooses to be polygamous).

@aish1990 Listen I respect you for having an opinion, but I will now give you some knowledge. In Surah 4 verse 3 it says that you can marry up to 4 but you have to treat them equally, but it then says that if you fear that you can't treat them equally then only marry one. And later it says that it is impossible to treat them equally so just marry one! BTW polygamy is also allowed in Mormonism, a branch of Christianity.

@aish1990 - (1) 1400 years ago, polygamy was the social norm; it wasn’t unusual for a man (of any religion or culture) to have multiple wives and women/men did not feel uncomfortable in a polygamous relationship because they were conditioned to think of it as “normal”. The richer the man, the more wives he had! Today, monogamy is the social norm and majority of us have been socially conditioned to view polygamy as unusual; thus we are less accepting towards a polygamous relationship.

@aish1990 - (2) Islam allows polygamy, however it is not mandatory; we are encouraged to be monogamous if we cant treat wives properly or if we feel uncomfortable in a polygamous relationship. Even when social rules change through the ages, this rule can be followed without changing the word of Allah. A couple can choose to be polygamous OR monogamous. These days it is uncommon for people to choose to be polygamous.1400 years ago, it was uncommon for people to choose to be monogamous.

In that initial phase, their goal was to spread the teachings of Islam (which includes treatment of women with respect & give them their own rights). Polygamy was the fastest way to spread Islam.

@aish1990 - (4) So how to women benefit from all this?! In accordance with the teachings of Islam, they gain the right to receive inheritance, they don’t give dowry (ie. Get “sold”), she can choose to run her own business & keep the money she earns, and she also gets the same education that a man receives. Had she married a non-Muslim man, she would still be in a polygamous relationship & she wouldn’t receive any of the benefits that Muslim women at that time received.

@aish1990 - (5) Would I want a polygamous relationship? No, I wouldn’t, because as a 21st century woman, polygamy is very uncommon (and thus, unusual/uncomfortable) to me. The need to spread Islam through polygamy is also not as necessary anymore, so I don’t feel the need to be polygamous. If I chose to be monogamous, in no way does my status as a Muslim woman diminish (compared to a woman who chooses to be polygamous).

Well if Islam was based on peaceful principles there would not be any real problem. As an ex-christian Lebanese Arab I get discriminated against because people assume I'm muslim, but I've already seen what this religion does to people, what it makes them think and do to others.
