  • "When Michelle kissed him he turned Republican!" LOL!! Loved that line! BTW I loved that movie and my girls loved it as well!

  • 2D is so much better than 3D...Get rid of this 3D crap and bring back classic Disney!!

  • I really liked this movie, and I do hope that it gets Disney to keep their animation studio open. I liked the songs, but I enjoy Randy Newman - and I thought it fit perfectly to use him since he spent a lot of his childhood their. It definitely wasn't at the level of the 80's age (that stuff is just amazing), but it was definitely worlds better than what Disney was producing right before they closed the studio (Pocahontas, etc). I like to think it's in the bottom of the good list.

  • I liked the movie. I do agree that the songs in it kind of sucked. "Almost There" was okay, but most of the songs were extremely simplistic and repetitive. Other than that, though, the movie was great.

  • Utterly agree, fantastic film and the music was brillant, but each character was wonderful so you loved it really because you loved them, especially Naveen :)

  • I completely agree with them. Alan Menken should have been hired as the score composer for The Princess and the Frog. All the movies they mentioned (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) had songs composed by Alan Menken and those songs are AMAZING.

  • Why do Americans still have such an issue with black people? I mean making a big deal about it not being a big deal makes it...well...a deal, doesn't it?

And EVERY video mentiones "a black president".

    SO?

Why do they care so much for the color of one's skin?

  • the thing is the movie isnt about race

again another great story with a little twist

this movies is great for any kid that can live up to. our real life issues whatever that is doesnt matter, nothing to do in a Disney movies

  • I hate the first dude! He's mean! I love this movie! :(

  • Excellent film I stumbled across it for free here thecinema |DOT| tv

  • who the hell popped in at 1:56??????

  • Umm....

  • How do you think it should've ended? Just asking out of curiosity =P

  • Wow, this reviewer never saw Aladin, Little Mermaid, or Beauty and the Beast. Why are we even listening to his opinion then. He's not qualified.

  • @TheAdidasadh

    so true

  • Comment removed

  • wth? prince naveen isnt black?!!?? then what is he?? D:

  • I think its funny that they're actually sitting and debating how this movie was... its a cartoon, already!!

I must be really easy to entertain :-/ LOL !!

  • If you have to choose between 1 - 10, then a 7 isnt a "B". A 7 is 70%, which is a low D.

  • 70% is a low C, not a low D. Is that what you meant? ;p

  • Thankyou, you are correct..it is a low C

  • 70% is 1% higher than an f. but if you go to a low graduating rate school its a low c.

  • A 60% is a D, though. A 59% or lower is failing.

  • Comment removed

  • but really, thats at a low graduating rate school

  • anyway, i knew this would be a less than enthusiastic review... the young turks always manage to slightly piss me off... i guess they're too sarcastic and cynical for me.

  • i'm pretty sure the gator sings ONCE in the movie. there are about seven songs in the movie that i count off the top of my head, not including reprise. i hate when non-musical fans say a movie has too many songs. RENT had too many songs, this does not. and i completely disagree with them... this movie was very strong. Shadow Man is one of the best villians ever. Tiana is the strongest princess ever. the songs are great. I like Little Mermaid, but I don't think it's better. Lion King is, though.

  • @prodigychild1988

    list of songs

    1. down in new orleans

    2. almost there

    3. friends on the other side

    4. human again (gator sings)

    5. gonna take you there

    6. ma bell evangeline.

  • the movie is good just not as good as lion king, or any of the classics. so its not to bad of a disney film, defiantly not their worst or their best

  • I totally agree that Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladding are great movies.

But in terms of the characters and theme it's is dealing with, this film is significantly different from others and I love that.

  • Ahh... the guy from rottentomatoes. I knew he looked familiar.

  • Hmm, I'd rather rewatch princess and the frog over Aladdin right now, but thats me. What really made this movie special, besides Naveen, hottest prince yet! Was the songs, they were too slow or really princessy, they were something almost anyone could sing without feeling too girly. I LOVED the jazz especially. The ending made me want to dance. :)

  • @DimitrisduchessXD

hey Anastasia my name is Aladdin so..

    leave me alone

  • You don't say? Why was the comment even necessary to add as a reply to me?

    A) I'm black, I don't need you to tell me that it's beautiful!

    B) I was telling the guy that this is the first black princess that Disney has used as the lead of the story b/c Jasmine was East Indian (Arab or something).

    C) Everyone came from Africans who were black but if we are going off of what we know today (when Aladdin was out) an call "black", Jasmine was not it!

  • Princess and the Frog was AWEOME. These guys don't know what they're talking about.

  • They are guys...What are they going to know about Classic Disney? xD

  • Like toddler girls know everything right?

  • Yeah, they do, since they look past the random stuff that doesn't make a difference, and lives like there's no tomorrow. Laugh, play, love.

Unlike a stuck up ass, they matter =]

  • I'm so glad that Nawal Zoghbi is going to do the princess's role in the Arabic version in Egypt.

  • I really liked the movie! And I think the reason I liked it so much was because it's been so long since disney has done something like this. It's nice to know that maybe kids now won't just grow up with Jonas brothers and Hannah Montana. I think they'll start making more!

  • Ben hasn't seen Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, or the Little Mermaid?! WTF

  • then hes not a true American

  • ooo thank you. this has been putting me in a quandary : )

  • Dr. Facilier FTW!!!

His song is tight XD "Friends from the other side"

  • Disney did a good job of staying as PC as possible and still pumping out a good movie. It was good, it reminded me that Disney could get it right when they want to. I did like the subtle racial obstacle Tiana had to overcome when the men she wanted to buy the building from referred to her "background". I think it kind of showed that they weren't avoiding the topic.

  • why does race even matter? i don't even know why that guy said "i liked the fact that she was black" it shouldn't even be a matter, i mean was alladin known as the movie with the first middle-eastern lead?

  • It wouldnt matter if things were fair. Since this is the first BLACK princess it becomes an issue! I am African American and personally I do not understand why the prince wasnt black as well!!

  • @cmunnerl very true!!lol i did a video review on the princess and the frog and someone told me i must have issues if it bothers me that the prince wasnt black.lol

  • Oh wow!! It's 2010, I wonder how many years itll take to see our first black prince.....considering the amount of time it took for the first black princess! lol!

  • december 21 2012

  • @Godsgift2mee, I would say that it depends on why it bothers you that the prince was not black.

Is it because it's about damn time Disney had a black prince? Fine, I'll go along with that. It *is* about damn time.

Or is it because the prince being white creates an interracial love interest? Well, then, I'm not on board with that because I couldn't care less whether people date interracially or not.

  • My apologies - the prince is not white, he's just not black, either.

  • @EyeLean5280 yea its not about interracial love that bothers me because i think interracial love is beautiful..but i think Disney had the perfect oppurtunity to make a black Prince when making this movie..kinda like killing two birds with one stone..that sounds kinda weird huh? lol but yea i think it wouldve been nice to introduce a black prince..i think disney should make every ethnicity princess and prince so all young children can feel special..

  • That all sounds like a perfectly reasonable point of view - seems it was the other guy who had the issues.

We're going to see the movie for New Year's. Our daughter's all excited about the first black princess, even though she herself is white.

But she wouldn't have been if friends hadn't pointed that out to her. She's so young and innocent, she took it entirely for granted that having a black president is the most natural thing in the world. It never occurred to her that Obama is special.

  • I think they went with making Prince Naveen's race indeterminable (he looks mixed to me) was to appeal to those that wanted an interational relationship or a Black prince at the same time. Not a bad idea.

  • And neither is OBAMA LOL

  • since they are making up a ratings system, I give it a 7 point 8 turkey.... turkeys .....turks

    :P

  • TYT also do an episode on why 2012 did not have scene of kaba getting destroyed..

    The young farts

  • Where's Ana? I think they needed a woman's opinion on this.

  • I'm anxiously waiting for next year to see what they do with their Rapunzel adaptation... it's supposedly going to be *THE Next Major Breakthrough in 3D-Animation*!!! check out the wiki article...

  • Whoops, meant to write "Cenk"

  • Ha, ha, ha! Cen's end comment killed me.

  • The Prince is from Merdonia. Lol. Is that really hard to remember? They say it like 15 times in that movie.

  • @ ICouldBeBritish: She's not the princess. The story title doesn't really reflect her and the Prince, it reflects the movie as a whole.

  • what is she princess of? there aren't princesses in america...

  • Technically, she is the princess of Maldonia. But i guess she could be nicknamed the princess of New Orleans . . .

  • @SundaysCybele because they already reviewed that movie.

  • @SundaysCybele

    they did...

  • maybe CUZ THEY HAVENT WATCHED IT yet.

  • umm, cause this is something crazy ass redneck christians will argue over, duh lol

  • my kids liked the movie

  • wow i didnt even realize she was black...

  • Ben didn't see Aladdin?! What is this madness?

  • LOL at Cenk rating a Disney Princess Movie :P

  • Disney put in as many black themes as they could without getting in trouble...why do they say it doesn't matter? I wish it was as generic as their other films, I really do but it's not.

She WAS going to be the second house made next to her mother in the rich girls house but many people felt that was too much of a stereotype and got all kinds of bad press so they changed it to where she's just serving the general public instead.

  • isn't micky black?

    Who cares?!

  • Sorry to break it to ya after all these years buddy... He's a mouse... Different species.

  • Wow, micky? really?

Did you really just betray your own stereotypes by trying to play the role of the well-meaning advocate for colorblindness?

  • I'll be seeing this one with my mom and younger sis. We tend to like Disney old-school musicals, so I expect we'll enjoy it.

  • Where's Ana??? Not liking the sausage party.

  • Why can't Ben come down with chronic laryngitis?

  • I haven't liked Disney movies since Alladin. I didn't even like The Lion King. I did KINDA like Mulan. And I suppose I liked Toy Story 2, and apart from that, Pixar included, no Disney movies.

  • @dEdGrimley Mulan was kickass.:)

    Lion King 1 &

  • @dEdGrimley

What about the emperor's new groove? I thought that movie was great.

  • Oh dear God, no... Especially since I used to have to watch that terrible animated series.

  • With all the garbage end of the earth, Vampire, PG 13 kids making out, this movie is a B+ to -A. Hard working BLACK woman marries a PRINCE. Inspirational and Classy. Add the New Orleans flavor, instant classic for ALL......

  • They should have done a Disney animated version of Coming To America, and gotten Eddie Murphy to reprise his role. They should have let him sing party all the time as well.

  • You guys left out Lion King! Songs and animation was fantastic, not to mention storyline. Yes, they took things from Othello and Kimba the White Lion, but it's still one of those classics that's up there.

I agree with your reviews, though. I did not felt the magic from the movie as much as I thought I'd feel. Being a Disney buff myself, that is.

  • He was from Macedonia

  • I'm waiting for Kung Fu Panda 2.

  • im waiting for Shrek XXIIIIV

  • @Mesquissto uhh, don't u mean; XXIX ?..

  • I'm pretty sure he was exaggerating.. But I could be wrong..

  • Not even in the ball park with The Lil Mermaid, Aladin, and the others. Brother Bear and Pixar killed Disney's animation. If this movie had epic songs then it just might have been worthy of being a great. Randy Newman did OK for Toy Story, but he's just not the gut that delivers blockbuster songs for a cartoon! Over all I'll give it a generious 6!

  • did it have big lip alligator moments?

  • TGWTG! Whoop whoop!

  • I think the Price was from Brazil.......or something. I know he wasnt from the middle east

  • I think the frog is supposed to be french.. but he is kinda dark..

  • @sealio9 Algerian-French, maybe?

  • Factoid, france has the has the highest population of black people in europe fyi.

  • well the prince is from a made up place called Maldonia, and the voice actor for him is brazilian i think :/ but he said that his accent was inspired by his father so i dont know.

  • some Disney films are ok... but if you want good animation Disney is not the place to look.. Japan is where Animation is at its best

  • Alladin was the best

  • Totally agree, I think aladin and the sequel was the best cartoon movie they ever did.

  • Well I don't care if its a bad or good movie, I'm taking my niece to see this so she will have a black princess in her mind. Something I never had growing up. Besides kids don't give a damn about ratings. They just want to see cartoons. And Lion King was the best Disney Movie of all time in my opinion

  • I didn't think its much of a great movie...

it's just like one of those new trashy movies like Madagascar, Ant Bully, or Over The Hedge.. where they try to slip in adult jokes which kinda ruins the movie.

  • why do they have a movie critic who hasn't seen aladin and the other classics o.o

if he was joking i couldn't tell lol

  • I'm definitely gonna go see this.

And Bambi is the ultimate classic Disney film IMO

  • You don't have to declare your opinion. It's pretty obvious that it is your opinion in the first place.

  • Ok... unnecessary... but I s'pose that was your point too though huh LOL

  • lol I dont know why the prince was middle eastern, but it's nice to see my people in disney movies. (other than aladdim)

  • The girl was probably Creole. There are a lot of Creoles in New Orleans.

  • Howard Ashman died of AIDS in the 90's. He was one of the two that wrote the better songs of the 1980's/90's Disney films.

  • For anyone who might be interested - one of the reason it was an important movie is that disney re-opened its traditional animation studios for this movie.

  • yep cinderella live action was black

  • she kissed him and he turned into a republican. LOL good one

  • "I would not let children watch them either." Why?

  • your over analyzing a Disney film

  • who cares what adults think about children movies. you guys arnt AT ALL what the movie was made for. DUH

  • OK I understand Ben came from network movie reviews prior to TYT BUT perhaps the show could be better served if he changed his pompous laid back arrogance for a more humble "grass-roots" attitude. We understand He has been to Hollywood and back but you're clearly no Ebert, Travers, or Michael Phillips - So sit up straight, let ur co-hosts finish a goddamn sentence once and a while, and quit being so full of yourself. Just a thought!

  • When has Disney ever kept the story to it's original form? Well maybe the oldest classics, somewhat.

  • How does ben go on not seeing little mermaid and aladdin? O_o

  • I love how Cenk is pumping out memorable quotes late in the year. First "the horses look too much like horses" and now "Obama was the first black president and when Michelle kissed him he turned into a republican".

  • Haha, classic Cenk quotes.

My favorite Cenk moment (not quote) was in the Christian side hug video. He was commenting on Christians fear of erections and how quickly they get them. He gestured a Christian erection with "vroom vroom". I almost died laughing.

  • why would they review this movie??? I kids movies are off the limits. leave it alone, dude. Nice movie.

  • No movie will ever compare to The Lion King. THAT is the disney classic.

  • Seriously Ben ,, you really ought to watch Alladin, if it's true that you haven't.

  • It was an EXCELLENT movie and fits right in next to Alladin, The Little Mermaid and any other classic Disney movie.

It had a tiny "lull" in it... towards the end... other than that - no qualms whatsoever.

And it has one of the greatest - most lovable new characters as well!

My 3 year old son loved it and I did too.

It gets an 8.5/10 from me. 9 and above are reserved for classics and this is just a HAIR away from it IMO.

    Good job Disney!

  • I'd like to see a disney movie where finding a prince is the be-all-end-all goal of life. I'd like to see one where a woman discovers she can be happy and successful of her own accord. What are we burning into our daughters' heads?

  • a B would be 8/10? he said 7/10 a B...

  • are you kidding? or are you stupid?

  • Actually I thought the same thing. I always thought that a 70 meant a C. Please enlighten us.

  • A "B movie" is different than giving a movie a B. Giving a movie a B would be an 8, but didn't Ben say it was a B movie? This describes the movie they saw and that it is in a different ranking system than "A movies." B movies are usually lower budget and so on. A B movie can be ranked a 2 or a 9, or you could give a B movie a B (8).

If Ben didn't mean this then all this typing was for not.

  • Not kidding, not stupid... troll be gone

  • Randy Newman vs. Alan Menken? The Menken/Rice combo was the best Disney had. Randy Newman sucks, can't think of a single song of his I like. Even his theme song for the TV show Monk was annoying (at best).

  • you dink, don't screw up your kid with your backwards views. if you think interracial couples are bad, fine, but don't teach your kids values based on nothing.

  • Uhh.. Kami.. Whats wrong with the lead being black?

  • You've got to be kidding, right?

  • are you kidding? because that is not cool... either way.

  • Are you serious? Race is a cultural construct and you are rejecting a lot of really good people before you have a chance to even meet them because of some arbitrary physical features your mind has assigned to a certain race. I'm sad for you and especially sad for your daughter. I hope she can see throught that BS like I did with my dad.

  • It's interesting. After all this time watching The Young Turks, I'm only realizing *now* that Mankiewicz is a douche. How interesting.

  • the only half deasent thing disney made was

The gummy bears, duck tales and darkwing duck and tail spin

The rest they made is total and uter crap!

    not worth shit! garbage!

and the gummy bears is really the only good one of those...

now days disney only makes the worst kind of crap.

i mean they make crap thats an insult to honest turds...

  • You forgot Chip&Dale's Rescue Rangers.

  • What's the gummy bears? Are you thinking care bears?

And don't forget Bill Nye the Science Guy. That was an awesome educational show. Lets see the disney channel have something educational nowadays.

  • hoooooooooooly shit. bill nye. you brought back great memories. thanks man.

  • Gummy Bears! I forgot about that show. Used to watch it when I was a kid.

Care Bears were classic, but don't tell me you've never heard of Gummy Bears?

  • you guys are great and all, but please don't review movies for my kids again. that was awkward and totally unhelpful.

  • And yet you watched it

  • Hm. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite disney movie. Lion King comes in a close second, I'll give this a check out.

  • I'm liking TYT's review panels lately. They've been fantastic.

  • any bets on the sort of subliminal sexual innuendos that people will start to find in this movie once it comes out on video?

  • A B would be an 8 out of 10...

Anyway, I, for one, loved the movie. I especially liked the fact that Ray the bug totally reminded me of James Carville.

  • What's "amusing" is that you take this bullshit half seriously, but you laugh your pompous asses off at someone who suggests 9/11 wasn't what we were told it was. Double standards much?

  • No I don't remember the green fuzzy guy that you told me about 20 times >:O

  • shwang wang wang

  • Heehee, every dude I know is so in love with the Lion King :D It is great though. Mufasaaa~

As a Disney fangirl I have to say I was very impressed with the movie, maybe even in my top 5 now, but I'll admit that it is nowhere near the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast. I think it's because the songs were barely memorable. But, I did give a crap about every single character, I wasn't bored for a second, and it was beautiful. :)

I thought it was a nice mix of fairytale and real life too.

  • I can't believe they didn't mention The Lion King. That is easily Disney's masterpiece, and truly one of the greatest—if not THE greatest—animated film of all time. It's INSANELY epic, and VERY powerful.

I actually didn't appreciate it until I watched it for the first time in YEARS as a 20-year-old.

  • Beauty and the beast sucked. The lion king, aladdin and tarzan were the best disney films in that order.

  • I was a child during the 90s, so I doubt this new 2D film will live up to the lion king, aladdin, etc

  • Wow that douche bag flinging the papers around saying thst he hasnt seen another disney classic doesn't seem like too good of a movie critic

  • As a kid, I hated the songs. As an adult, I hated the songs.

    THESE MOVIES DON'T NEED SONGS!

Lilo & Stitch: Awesome, had no song.

The Emperor's New Groove: Awesome, only had theme and end songs.

    Seriously, Disney...stop with the singin'.

  • what about beauty and the beast or aladdin or little mermaid r jungle book? so many of these have good songs to it.

  • Meh.

"The Lion King" had a song or two I liked in it...but I really wish they'd gone songless, frankly. The songs are just a waste of time that COULD be spent telling a more interesting story.

  • The lion king is still one of my favorite movies and the songs made it much better. The circle of life, can you feel the love tonight.. good songs by themselves but in the movie they were amazing. Lion King wouldn't have been the same without the songs.

  • Well, that's musicals, some people like em some don't.
