I really liked this movie, and I do hope that it gets Disney to keep their animation studio open. I liked the songs, but I enjoy Randy Newman - and I thought it fit perfectly to use him since he spent a lot of his childhood their. It definitely wasn't at the level of the 80's age (that stuff is just amazing), but it was definitely worlds better than what Disney was producing right before they closed the studio (Pocahontas, etc). I like to think it's in the bottom of the good list.
I liked the movie. I do agree that the songs in it kind of sucked. "Almost There" was okay, but most of the songs were extremely simplistic and repetitive. Other than that, though, the movie was great.
Utterly agree, fantastic film and the music was brillant, but each character was wonderful so you loved it really because you loved them, especially Naveen :)
I completely agree with them. Alan Menken should have been hired as the score composer for The Princess and the Frog. All the movies they mentioned (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) had songs composed by Alan Menken and those songs are AMAZING.
Why do Americans still have such an issue with black people? I mean making a big deal about it not being a big deal makes it...well...a deal, doesn't it?
And EVERY video mentiones "a black president".
SO?
Why do they care so much for the color of one's skin?
anyway, i knew this would be a less than enthusiastic review... the young turks always manage to slightly piss me off... i guess they're too sarcastic and cynical for me.
i'm pretty sure the gator sings ONCE in the movie. there are about seven songs in the movie that i count off the top of my head, not including reprise. i hate when non-musical fans say a movie has too many songs. RENT had too many songs, this does not. and i completely disagree with them... this movie was very strong. Shadow Man is one of the best villians ever. Tiana is the strongest princess ever. the songs are great. I like Little Mermaid, but I don't think it's better. Lion King is, though.
Hmm, I'd rather rewatch princess and the frog over Aladdin right now, but thats me. What really made this movie special, besides Naveen, hottest prince yet! Was the songs, they were too slow or really princessy, they were something almost anyone could sing without feeling too girly. I LOVED the jazz especially. The ending made me want to dance. :)
You don't say? Why was the comment even necessary to add as a reply to me?
A) I'm black, I don't need you to tell me that it's beautiful!
B) I was telling the guy that this is the first black princess that Disney has used as the lead of the story b/c Jasmine was East Indian (Arab or something).
C) Everyone came from Africans who were black but if we are going off of what we know today (when Aladdin was out) an call "black", Jasmine was not it!
I really liked the movie! And I think the reason I liked it so much was because it's been so long since disney has done something like this. It's nice to know that maybe kids now won't just grow up with Jonas brothers and Hannah Montana. I think they'll start making more!
Disney did a good job of staying as PC as possible and still pumping out a good movie. It was good, it reminded me that Disney could get it right when they want to. I did like the subtle racial obstacle Tiana had to overcome when the men she wanted to buy the building from referred to her "background". I think it kind of showed that they weren't avoiding the topic.
why does race even matter? i don't even know why that guy said "i liked the fact that she was black" it shouldn't even be a matter, i mean was alladin known as the movie with the first middle-eastern lead?
It wouldnt matter if things were fair. Since this is the first BLACK princess it becomes an issue! I am African American and personally I do not understand why the prince wasnt black as well!!
@cmunnerl very true!!lol i did a video review on the princess and the frog and someone told me i must have issues if it bothers me that the prince wasnt black.lol
Oh wow!! It's 2010, I wonder how many years itll take to see our first black prince.....considering the amount of time it took for the first black princess! lol!
@Godsgift2mee, I would say that it depends on why it bothers you that the prince was not black.
Is it because it's about damn time Disney had a black prince? Fine, I'll go along with that. It *is* about damn time.
Or is it because the prince being white creates an interracial love interest? Well, then, I'm not on board with that because I couldn't care less whether people date interracially or not.
@EyeLean5280 yea its not about interracial love that bothers me because i think interracial love is beautiful..but i think Disney had the perfect oppurtunity to make a black Prince when making this movie..kinda like killing two birds with one stone..that sounds kinda weird huh? lol but yea i think it wouldve been nice to introduce a black prince..i think disney should make every ethnicity princess and prince so all young children can feel special..
That all sounds like a perfectly reasonable point of view - seems it was the other guy who had the issues.
We're going to see the movie for New Year's. Our daughter's all excited about the first black princess, even though she herself is white.
But she wouldn't have been if friends hadn't pointed that out to her. She's so young and innocent, she took it entirely for granted that having a black president is the most natural thing in the world. It never occurred to her that Obama is special.
I think they went with making Prince Naveen's race indeterminable (he looks mixed to me) was to appeal to those that wanted an interational relationship or a Black prince at the same time. Not a bad idea.
I'm anxiously waiting for next year to see what they do with their Rapunzel adaptation... it's supposedly going to be *THE Next Major Breakthrough in 3D-Animation*!!! check out the wiki article...
Disney put in as many black themes as they could without getting in trouble...why do they say it doesn't matter? I wish it was as generic as their other films, I really do but it's not.
She WAS going to be the second house made next to her mother in the rich girls house but many people felt that was too much of a stereotype and got all kinds of bad press so they changed it to where she's just serving the general public instead.
I haven't liked Disney movies since Alladin. I didn't even like The Lion King. I did KINDA like Mulan. And I suppose I liked Toy Story 2, and apart from that, Pixar included, no Disney movies.
With all the garbage end of the earth, Vampire, PG 13 kids making out, this movie is a B+ to -A. Hard working BLACK woman marries a PRINCE. Inspirational and Classy. Add the New Orleans flavor, instant classic for ALL......
They should have done a Disney animated version of Coming To America, and gotten Eddie Murphy to reprise his role. They should have let him sing party all the time as well.
You guys left out Lion King! Songs and animation was fantastic, not to mention storyline. Yes, they took things from Othello and Kimba the White Lion, but it's still one of those classics that's up there.

well the prince is from a made up place called Maldonia, and the voice actor for him is brazilian i think :/ but he said that his accent was inspired by his father so i dont know.
Well I don't care if its a bad or good movie, I'm taking my niece to see this so she will have a black princess in her mind. Something I never had growing up. Besides kids don't give a damn about ratings. They just want to see cartoons. And Lion King was the best Disney Movie of all time in my opinion
it's just like one of those new trashy movies like Madagascar, Ant Bully, or Over The Hedge.. where they try to slip in adult jokes which kinda ruins the movie.
For anyone who might be interested - one of the reason it was an important movie is that disney re-opened its traditional animation studios for this movie.
OK I understand Ben came from network movie reviews prior to TYT BUT perhaps the show could be better served if he changed his pompous laid back arrogance for a more humble "grass-roots" attitude. We understand He has been to Hollywood and back but you're clearly no Ebert, Travers, or Michael Phillips - So sit up straight, let ur co-hosts finish a goddamn sentence once and a while, and quit being so full of yourself. Just a thought!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
propaganda that hits on two levels. one for the kids, and one for their FUCKING STUPID PARENTS. this show sucks royally. congratulations, you droolers.
I love how Cenk is pumping out memorable quotes late in the year. First "the horses look too much like horses" and now "Obama was the first black president and when Michelle kissed him he turned into a republican".
My favorite Cenk moment (not quote) was in the Christian side hug video. He was commenting on Christians fear of erections and how quickly they get them. He gestured a Christian erection with "vroom vroom". I almost died laughing.
I'd like to see a disney movie where finding a prince is the be-all-end-all goal of life. I'd like to see one where a woman discovers she can be happy and successful of her own accord. What are we burning into our daughters' heads?
A "B movie" is different than giving a movie a B. Giving a movie a B would be an 8, but didn't Ben say it was a B movie? This describes the movie they saw and that it is in a different ranking system than "A movies." B movies are usually lower budget and so on. A B movie can be ranked a 2 or a 9, or you could give a B movie a B (8).
If Ben didn't mean this then all this typing was for not.
Randy Newman vs. Alan Menken? The Menken/Rice combo was the best Disney had. Randy Newman sucks, can't think of a single song of his I like. Even his theme song for the TV show Monk was annoying (at best).
you dink, don't screw up your kid with your backwards views. if you think interracial couples are bad, fine, but don't teach your kids values based on nothing.
Are you serious? Race is a cultural construct and you are rejecting a lot of really good people before you have a chance to even meet them because of some arbitrary physical features your mind has assigned to a certain race. I'm sad for you and especially sad for your daughter. I hope she can see throught that BS like I did with my dad.
What's "amusing" is that you take this bullshit half seriously, but you laugh your pompous asses off at someone who suggests 9/11 wasn't what we were told it was. Double standards much?
Heehee, every dude I know is so in love with the Lion King :D It is great though. Mufasaaa~
As a Disney fangirl I have to say I was very impressed with the movie, maybe even in my top 5 now, but I'll admit that it is nowhere near the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast. I think it's because the songs were barely memorable. But, I did give a crap about every single character, I wasn't bored for a second, and it was beautiful. :)
I thought it was a nice mix of fairytale and real life too.
I can't believe they didn't mention The Lion King. That is easily Disney's masterpiece, and truly one of the greatest—if not THE greatest—animated film of all time. It's INSANELY epic, and VERY powerful.
I actually didn't appreciate it until I watched it for the first time in YEARS as a 20-year-old.
"The Lion King" had a song or two I liked in it...but I really wish they'd gone songless, frankly. The songs are just a waste of time that COULD be spent telling a more interesting story.
The lion king is still one of my favorite movies and the songs made it much better. The circle of life, can you feel the love tonight.. good songs by themselves but in the movie they were amazing. Lion King wouldn't have been the same without the songs.
"When Michelle kissed him he turned Republican!" LOL!! Loved that line! BTW I loved that movie and my girls loved it as well!

Howard Ashman died of AIDS in the 90's. He was one of the two that wrote the better songs of the 1980's/90's Disney films.
sweettater99 2 years ago
For anyone who might be interested - one of the reason it was an important movie is that disney re-opened its traditional animation studios for this movie.

I've never seen any of those Disney films they are talking about and don't plan to.
I would not let children watch them either.

I think the Disney films misrepresent the characterization of different ethnic groups
in stereotyped ways.
Also, the messages are often overly simplistic and silly. Children need to see flms that don't stereotype others and that don't talk down to them.

your over analyzing a Disney film

OK I understand Ben came from network movie reviews prior to TYT BUT perhaps the show could be better served if he changed his pompous laid back arrogance for a more humble "grass-roots" attitude. We understand He has been to Hollywood and back but you're clearly no Ebert, Travers, or Michael Phillips - So sit up straight, let ur co-hosts finish a goddamn sentence once and a while, and quit being so full of yourself. Just a thought!

a few things, why is the nerdy guy talking about this if he hasn't even seen Aladdin Beauty and the beast, or The little mermaid?
Who cares if shes black i agree, but its a slap in the face to the original story, and i think they should keep it to its original fourm.
RedGrobo 2 years ago
When has Disney ever kept the story to it's original form? Well maybe the oldest classics, somewhat.

I love how Cenk is pumping out memorable quotes late in the year. First "the horses look too much like horses" and now "Obama was the first black president and when Michelle kissed him he turned into a republican".
DrQuijano 2 years ago 2
Haha, classic Cenk quotes.
My favorite Cenk moment (not quote) was in the Christian side hug video. He was commenting on Christians fear of erections and how quickly they get them. He gestured a Christian erection with "vroom vroom". I almost died laughing.

why would they review this movie??? I kids movies are off the limits. leave it alone, dude. Nice movie.

No movie will ever compare to The Lion King. THAT is the disney classic.

Seriously Ben ,, you really ought to watch Alladin, if it's true that you haven't.
piotrezzz 2 years ago
It was an EXCELLENT movie and fits right in next to Alladin, The Little Mermaid and any other classic Disney movie.
It had a tiny "lull" in it... towards the end... other than that - no qualms whatsoever.
And it has one of the greatest - most lovable new characters as well!
My 3 year old son loved it and I did too.
It gets an 8.5/10 from me. 9 and above are reserved for classics and this is just a HAIR away from it IMO.
Good job Disney!

I'd like to see a disney movie where finding a prince is the be-all-end-all goal of life. I'd like to see one where a woman discovers she can be happy and successful of her own accord. What are we burning into our daughters' heads?

a B would be 8/10? he said 7/10 a B...

episteme420 2 years ago
Actually I thought the same thing. I always thought that a 70 meant a C. Please enlighten us.
fathead8489 2 years ago
A "B movie" is different than giving a movie a B. Giving a movie a B would be an 8, but didn't Ben say it was a B movie? This describes the movie they saw and that it is in a different ranking system than "A movies." B movies are usually lower budget and so on. A B movie can be ranked a 2 or a 9, or you could give a B movie a B (8).
If Ben didn't mean this then all this typing was for not.

Not kidding, not stupid... troll be gone

Randy Newman vs. Alan Menken? The Menken/Rice combo was the best Disney had. Randy Newman sucks, can't think of a single song of his I like. Even his theme song for the TV show Monk was annoying (at best).

My little girl is mad at me because I won't take her to see this.
The one Disney movie with a black female lead and her love interest is a white guy....that's not okay.
She saw Pocahontas but without my permission.

you dink, don't screw up your kid with your backwards views. if you think interracial couples are bad, fine, but don't teach your kids values based on nothing.

Are you serious? Race is a cultural construct and you are rejecting a lot of really good people before you have a chance to even meet them because of some arbitrary physical features your mind has assigned to a certain race. I'm sad for you and especially sad for your daughter. I hope she can see throught that BS like I did with my dad.

any bets on the sort of subliminal sexual innuendos that people will start to find in this movie once it comes out on video?

Anyway, I, for one, loved the movie. I especially liked the fact that Ray the bug totally reminded me of James Carville.

Who cares. This gets attention because the character is black? Picking based on color is why Obama got elected.

VictimOfBoredom 2 years ago 8
Beauty and the beast sucked. The lion king, aladdin and tarzan were the best disney films in that order.

I was a child during the 90s, so I doubt this new 2D film will live up to the lion king, aladdin, etc

As a kid, I hated the songs. As an adult, I hated the songs.
THESE MOVIES DON'T NEED SONGS!
Lilo & Stitch: Awesome, had no song.
The Emperor's New Groove: Awesome, only had theme and end songs.
Seriously, Disney...stop with the singin'.
BionicDance 2 years ago 2
what about beauty and the beast or aladdin or little mermaid r jungle book? so many of these have good songs to it.
plusmin09 2 years ago 2
Meh.
"The Lion King" had a song or two I liked in it...but I really wish they'd gone songless, frankly. The songs are just a waste of time that COULD be spent telling a more interesting story.
BionicDance 2 years ago
The lion king is still one of my favorite movies and the songs made it much better. The circle of life, can you feel the love tonight.. good songs by themselves but in the movie they were amazing. Lion King wouldn't have been the same without the songs.
