Again, you people crack me up wondering how all this stuff happens! Have you ever thought of reading the BOOK? The Phantom was one of the original contractors that built the opera house, which is where he chose to build his "house by the lake". He is also a genius composer, ventrilloquist, escape artist, illusionist, contractor/designer, and is known for his stangulation techniques. "Keep your hand at the level of your eyes" is so he can't get the noose around your neck! The book is amazing!

Gerard Butler was perfect for this role; his acting was superb-he was ominous and sinister, but masculine and seductive. And his voice was perfect, husky with great feeling, he had a gravelly quality at times, and showed so much emotion in both acting and singing. Michael Crawford would have been 62 years old when he made the movie. And his voice had a sharp edge to it which got on my nerves. They wanted someone young and sexy so that there would be a reason for Christine to "fancy him."

I have no idea why people are blasting Gerard Butler's singing so much. I'm not gonna lie and say it's the best singing I've ever heard, because it isn't, but I've seen the stage version of "Phantom of the Opera" many times, both on national tours and on Broadway, and I've seen actors for Phantom ON BROADWAY who didn't do as well as Gerard did. My guess is the bashing comes from people who really wanted to see Michael Crawford do the role. That would have been cool, but Gerard was still awesome!
