Actually, if you take a look at Wikipedia, it says that guinea pigs naturally, are "exceedingly good swimmers". He's not running around on the bottom and he's not going to drown! If you put a guinea pig in a swimming pool you will see that they swim better than Michael Phelps! Very cute guinea pig!

actually, you do need to be careful about water getting into your guinea pig's nose whether swimming or bathing. they do have very sensitive respiratory systems and get upper respiratory infections easily. it's awfully cute to watch a guinea pig swim (i've had mine swim before but don't do it anymore because i don't want to take any chances of water getting into their noses and then into their lungs to cause a URI)

I don't see why so many people are posting so many negative comments. I did a small animal care course for two years. Guinea pigs can be put in water but not deep water ( a good example is above) It doesn't always mean they enjoy it but it's a good way to exercise them also it allows them to get use to water incase you need to bathe them for whatever reason, You don't actually need to bathe guinea pigs they do groom themselves.So stop being so nasty, the guinea pig is perfectly fine.

My guinea pig, Lucky, who died 5 months ago LOVED being bathed. Yet people keep saying guinea pigs hate being in water.

I usually put him in a very small plastic bucket half filled of water and soap to wash him. He was a very healthy and clean animal. (The bucket, btw, was small enough for him to practically sit in and rest his paw on the bucket's top)

Other people use running water and soap over the guinea pig in the sink, etc.

Therefore cavies don't like open water probably.

I remember when i bathed my little brothers guinea pig the first time, she was so scared.. But after about a year with several baths she liked it =) didnt move.. she just sat and enjoyed beeing cleaned and i think she loved it.

They need to be cleaned sometimes cause they get so oily in their furr.

LOL, my guineapig did this today, i put it in a slanting bath so one end was dry and the other approx 6 inches deep. She swam around for ages but pooped everywhere, i wasnt forcing her as she could get on to dry whenever she wanted, the poop is just cause she needs to poop

You can do it either way. Letting a Guinea Pig Swim is actually good excersize for them. Just keep the water shallow.
