"Rather Ripped" was a GREAT Sonic Youth album, btw. Check out Sleepin Around and Reena. These are classic SY songs. This band stands the test of time. But yeah, Kim's singing is pretty weak these days.
@Triumph72 Oh they definitely stand the test of time, indeed. I just wasn't all that impressed with their last two albums. "What a Waste" on RR was okay. It's just that those albums were more song-based, instead of the awesome racket they made on albums like A Thousand Leaves, Washing Machine, Murray Street, and of course, the omnipotent Daydream Nation.
I hate to be one of those guys, but everything SY do will always fall short of Daydream Nation. That album was its own moment in time.
@Ashleigh18644 I'm a fan of the noisy stuff but also the song stuff. I think they can do it all. Sleepin Around is really a high-energy, rousing, raucous rocker of a song. A Thousand Leaves was very good, as was Murray Street. I haven't heard Sonic Nurse, I have to check it out! But...I will disagree here..Daydream Nation is great and the chalk pick for best album...but my fav is Washing Machine. Dirty and Goo and Experimental Jet Set all contain some of the great song stuff too.
@Triumph72 I will say this though: I was blown away by that late-career highlight they dropped known as the almighty "Sonic Nurse". GREAT songs on that one. Unmade Bed, Peace Attack, Dripping Dream and that Mariah Carey diss track on there were all indicative of SY at their peak. I'm going to go listen to that one, right after I get done watching a bunch of Hope clips on Youtube first...
Sonic Youth is indeed fantastic but I fear they may have entered the twilight of their career, as their last few albums have failed to come even close to their "good" stuff. Hopefully being back on an indie label will motivate them some. I enjoy some of their songs with Kim on Vocals, like "What Was It Anyway", "I Love You Golden Blue", and of course, "Tunic" :D

"Rather Ripped" was a GREAT Sonic Youth album, btw. Check out Sleepin Around and Reena. These are classic SY songs. This band stands the test of time. But yeah, Kim's singing is pretty weak these days.

@Triumph72 Oh they definitely stand the test of time, indeed. I just wasn't all that impressed with their last two albums. "What a Waste" on RR was okay. It's just that those albums were more song-based, instead of the awesome racket they made on albums like A Thousand Leaves, Washing Machine, Murray Street, and of course, the omnipotent Daydream Nation.
I hate to be one of those guys, but everything SY do will always fall short of Daydream Nation. That album was its own moment in time.

@Ashleigh18644 I'm a fan of the noisy stuff but also the song stuff. I think they can do it all. Sleepin Around is really a high-energy, rousing, raucous rocker of a song. A Thousand Leaves was very good, as was Murray Street. I haven't heard Sonic Nurse, I have to check it out! But...I will disagree here..Daydream Nation is great and the chalk pick for best album...but my fav is Washing Machine. Dirty and Goo and Experimental Jet Set all contain some of the great song stuff too.

@Triumph72 I will say this though: I was blown away by that late-career highlight they dropped known as the almighty "Sonic Nurse". GREAT songs on that one. Unmade Bed, Peace Attack, Dripping Dream and that Mariah Carey diss track on there were all indicative of SY at their peak. I'm going to go listen to that one, right after I get done watching a bunch of Hope clips on Youtube first...

Sonic Youth is indeed fantastic but I fear they may have entered the twilight of their career, as their last few albums have failed to come even close to their "good" stuff. Hopefully being back on an indie label will motivate them some. I enjoy some of their songs with Kim on Vocals, like "What Was It Anyway", "I Love You Golden Blue", and of course, "Tunic" :D

@Ashleigh18644 Kim on Kool Thing's fine, restrained instead of doing that off-key feeble-shriek thing she usually does.And Kissability,which she sings,is a fave --in spite of her, as I like its guitar moments.I liked their last one "The Eternal", but 1987's "Daydream Nation" will likely be my fave SY album forever.I agree they may have peaked long ago.

Hope's beauty's 2NDary to her talents as a singer, lyricist&a genius for writing emotive melodies..Still, it's hard to ignore her exotic good looks I'm convinced derive from her Mexican Indian ancestors(almost all Mexicans are part Indian).Ancient Mayan paintings show Indian side profiles just like Hope's face& frontal pics of Mex. Indians show lots of broad,round faces,like Hope's.When I post about this,no one responds,as if they're biased& don't want to think of Hope as Mex./Indian.Why not?

@syndetic You might be right many don't know Mexicans are of mixed-race.Also,since there's lots of US resentment re. illegal Mex. immigrants,maybe some folks who dig Hope,don't dig Mexicans,&so just don't want to think about Hope's background,or contemplate she's from a large Mex-American family! But I find it appealing Hope's exotic beauty may derive partly from her Mex. Indian ancestors & that she perhaps bears some resemblance to some Mayan princess beauty who lived in Palenque circa 600AD!

@Bobjb999 Nationalism and economic competition on our parts [ideally] shouldn't bias our aesthetic sense when weighing whether someone is attractive or not. When I first saw her I actually didn't make the connection until I saw her last name. She's part European (Spanish), as most Latinos are; that should relax most U.S. citizens. If there's anything – anything – about her that turns me off, it's not her ancestry but the fact that Anthony Kiedis boned her :( *sigh*

@headstock48 Agreed.I love "Aeroplane" Kiedis wrote about Hope.I liked it in '95,but wasn't then aware of Hope's talents(sadly).I should have listened closer to Aeroplane's lyrics&taken heed!Like you,I was a Chilis' fan before becoming a(belated)Mazzy/Hope fan.She's now my fave singer ever.She has a genius for melody writing too(melancholy tinged, as Kiedis says).I've uploaded a better recorded,uncensored version to YT (F-words intact)of Aeroplane,acknowledging the song's subject, Hope Sandoval!

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, so don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think the entire song is about Hope. I think she's just referenced. I think the song is about music, pain, pleasure, death, looking for love, etc. as are many of the Chili's songs. It's a killer song. Great groove, excellent lyrics, thought provoking. Rock on.

Hope.A preamble.But he gets real specific after that,imo,with last 2 verses all on how Hope's sad song(s)&voice affect him.Kiedis takes this phrase from sad Mazzy song "Into Dust": "turning into dust".Last verse is all on the strong effect of notes "from the song she wrote".--Which she& which song? The ones referenced in the prior verse,Hope&"ID"!The lines about death are,imo,metaphors for strong effect, a la "Killing me softly with his song".

I love Funky Monks, Favorite things, Suck My Kiss. Great groove, too.

@headstock48 I always liked RHCP too.Maybe I'm biased,but I love the lyrics!He evidently puts thought&heart into his words.-In the context of the rest of the song,the line: "Songbird sweet&sour Jane" seems to have Hope in mind too,imo.For the chorus,"Jane" fits better than "Hope",as it rhymes with "aeroplane".By verse 2, we learn who this "Jane (Doe)" of the chorus is,she's "the star of Mazzy"! -YT spiked my Aeroplane upload,so I uploaded a new one re. Aeroplane but using "Into Dust" as audio.

Hope Sandoval...I seriously want to father her children. She's deathly beautiful, she has the greatest female voice ever, and she apparently doesn't beleive in brassieres or doesn't know what they are because she's like NEVER wearing one in her videos, photos or her performances.
She's not wearing one here, she doesn't wear one in the Among My Swan instruction booklet photos, and she's not wearing one in the Fade Into You video during the scenes where she's standing in the desert. Justsayin.

@Ashleigh18644 The echo in Hope's voice is an electronics effect,not a natural quality of her singing.She always uses reverb,both in studio&onstage, creating that slight echo. I have a recording of an '09 San Francisco(The Fillmore)Hope concert where she asks the audience: "How's the reverb out there? Are you sure? We need more reverb."
-Still, reverb sounds so good on her&creates a seductive,slightly otherworldly sound,only 'cause she's already blessed with such a fine voice&talent. My fave!
