I live in Georgia and I love my state hence my flying of the flag. That was Georgia's original flag before the hippies started crying about it saying it was racist.
I'm well aware what flag that is, and it represents the ghost of a state whose history was rife with treachery and racism. I can only assume that people who are eager to display symbols of that past are happy to adopt that ideology as well.
Just because there was racism in a state does not mean the flag represents said feeling. By that logic, then the United States flag represents the same because contrary to popular ignorance, the Confederacy was not the only organization that supported slavery. The Union did also. Lincoln even owned them himself.
I fly that flag because I love my state and I honor the sacrifices made by a member of my family and all the other Confederates who fought.
But of course it was the Union that took steps to disentangle American and slavery. Granted, the southern states were more economically entwined in that particular institution than those in the north. That doesn't however, change the fact that economic stability meant more to them that human rights and a healthy union. And while I no more would accuse your family member of being a racist than I would the average German soldier of being a Nazi, that antiquated flag represents something dark.
It doesn't matter who was more dependent on slavery. The point is they were both supportive of it. The North was only against slavery expanding to the new western states thus giving the South more political power. Again, they both supported it.
But this is all beyond the point. You are just another slave (forgive the pun) of the media. Do research. This flag is not representative of slavery, but of an army that fought against Northern aggression. To believe otherwise is to be totally ignorant.
The south's dependence on slavery was a defense of YOUR argument, not mine. But the North was concerned with upsetting the balance of slave/non-slave states in westward expansion... so they were worried about the political sway of slave states in general, not SPECIFICALLY of the South. "Aggression" is such a convenient word for southerners to use to sugar-coat the way the Union dealt with traitors. In any case, the media is unconcerned with much of this. It's unclear how I could be their slave.
