the reason dachshunds love to dig is because they were origionally bred as badger hunters, and they were bred long to fit into the tight holes they'll have to dig in order to get one.

Our daschund would dig just a bit at the edge of the fence, enough to get our lab/newfoundland interested. The big dog would dig like crazy, and in a matter of seconds have a hole big enough for the daschund to go under, and poof, he was gone. You could almost see the big dog scratching his head.

My Springer Spaniel "Jerry" used to dig immense, deep holes at the beach in search of rocks. Got so compulsive about it, the dog's teeth got worn down to nubbs from chewing on rocks...dogs will be dogs but its best to curb 'bad' habits, those bad for the dog!
