The first time I ever heard this as a teen, I had no idea what the hell JA was saying I just knew it sounded awesome. Still one of my favorite Fates songs.
For me its a toss up between Spectre and Guardian. I listen to the tracks off of both albums regularly. I also keep Damnation off of Brocken on my mp3 player.
Hey, I have to agree with you yukons95, John Arch was such a wonderful relief to what was out there at the time. This album and the ones before blew doors.
Fates Warning was by far one of the most underrated bands. They are the standard by which all the new metal aspires to be musically. I saw these dudes in Denver at some shitty little club for the Spectre Within tour.. Life changing..
love this song, take me back when me and my little brother us to drive around.. cought these guy in salt lake city. back in the day at the speedwaycafe.

Every time I come these videos there is a perpetual debate of high pitched metal vocalists. People always fail to recognize that Geddy Lee had a large hand in creating the style. And as far as the absolute highest notes sung you cannot surpass Geddy's falsetto wail near the end of Cygnus X1. If you haven't heard it you're in for a fuckin' trip.
No to say that Arch isn't amazing, in actuality I prefer him over any other high pitched vocalist ever, you know that you're going to get great melodic variation when you listen to him, most singers sound exactly the same in every song.
you're absolutely right about geddy lee. he's a great vocalist and can certainly nail some pretty high notes. the whole trio is just so tight, great players all around.
one of the great things about this song is at the start of the solo, right after the line "frost bitten heart", one guitar goes down the high E string, the other one goes up the E string, ending at the same note the other started at. this "counter harmony" frames the following solo perfectly.
Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian one of the best metal best of the 80's. Time changes in the Drumming Ruds changed my Drumming forever. Fates Brings me back to my Youth. Fates will not deter us!
Well, Well, this is a big one. This album changed my life when I was growing up, it meant so much to me and I applied it to everyting that was happening at the time. The Magic- This music has properties that really lite up the world of magic and eternity.. Long live Fates' Long live John Arch.
Everyone else probably thinks ur nuts but I totally agree with you... the thing that got me off the most about these guys was no one else really knew about them and I was able to intro to all my friends. They fell in love with them immediately.

Bruce is the best end of story and i respect John Arch.

i'm sorry i'm "an retarted", but Bruce is not the best. not by a long shot.

@obamasux2008 Ray Alder did on No Exit. Many metal vocalists in the 80's could hit notes like arc, but i know what your saying Fates Warning is godly

@CrushJehovah I think that No Exit is my favorite of the non-Arch Fates albums. But after that I just lost interest.
