I think I heard this haunting music while watching Pretty Baby. It was when she was in the limo going home at the end of the movie. It reminded me of the beautiful video I saw maybe 35 years ago. I Googled it and to my surprise was able to revisit an old friend. I wonder how many: flowers, stray cats, unloved children are also trying to grow up in a grey concrete jungle.
There must be something special about the people who remember and are so touched by this.
This song etched itself into my brain and never left and after decades, I found it again. The song make me teary for whatever reason. Maybe because only with music you can express something so beautiful.
This music mesmerized me as a child, and it still brings tears to my eyes as I remember that feeling. Probably one of the first classical pieces I ever really heard.
OOHHHH!!! I Loved this one as a child, so beautiful and melancholy at the same time...this is when sesame street was the best and before it's time...lovely!
I heard this song this morning while getting coffee at a Panera. I vividly remember hearing this beautiful tune as a young boy watching Sesame Street getting ready for school with my sister. Now that all my kids are finally in school, it brought tears to my eyes reflecting on my life of the growth of a boy into a man and a dad. Thank you for posting. Tears of joy!
I remember this as a child. I've always loved classical music. As an adult. I usually keep my radio on classical or Christian music, because except for some of the music of the 1980s, they're nothing decent to hear anymore
My God, not a day has gone by in my life where this song and clip from Sesame Street hasn't played in my mind. Nostalgic and hauntingly beautiful. Bless you for posting this, it has made my year.
Finding this clip on a rainy day made my day. Despite being a rock-and-roll girl from day one, at age 4 this "flowers in the rain with Vivaldi clip" captivated me. It may have been the first time I cried from happiness. At age 40 it's just as hypnotic and wondrous. It is indeed a crying shame something like this would never be shown on contemporary children's television (including, most likely, the current Sesame Street) because it's too slow-paced and doesn't promote a moral agenda.
it's amazing that we all had the same experience as little kids to this video. As a 5-year-old, no matter what I was doing, I stopped and watched, almost hypnotized, when this video came on Sesame Street. I remember the original video as having more rain and puddles, etc., but this is great.
Remember watching this with tears rolling down your face and making sense out of nothing? Drawing your own conclusions on why the flower was so sad and happy at the same time, this made me discover the mood of meloncholy. Oh to be a child of the 70's all over again.

Me, too! I was in fourth grade and immediately starting playing it by ear on my recorder. Then Slim (Robert Carradine) played it The Cowboys. Still love it and the movie, too.

This isn't the exact one played in the original clip, but it's very close -- I've looked for the artist's name who played the original on and off for years now... not really going to get any hits off of iTunes. :) I wish I could get a pristine copy of the original tape recording, even if it is a little crackly... would put me right back in 1975, when I first heard it. A tremendous hammerblow of grace and beauty -- Sesame Street should plant more seeds like this in young minds. ;)
@mojojojo928 There's another version of this on youtube which I'm pretty sure is the original audio, though the quality isn't perfect- search for "Sesame Street - Sad flower film"
I can add my comment that this song impacted me as a young child and I could always vaguely remember it but not be able to put a name to it. i am SO GLAD you finally solved the longstanding mystery for me. It was interesting to learn how you learned of the title of the piece in the restaurant. It's utterly amazing how music can impact a person, even young children watching a TV show such as Sesame Street. Now if only iTunes will have this song. I hope so as I want to listen to it over and over!!
ive been looking for this in ages, thank you thank you so much for this video... i think i was 5 or 6 when i was first mesmerized with this music and the video. you make me cry beautiful tears of joy.
I too heard this as a child and never forgot it! I tried in vain to find out what it was, and then saw the John Wayne movie "The Cowboys" where one of the boys plays it on the guitar. This inspired me to take guitar lessons and learn to play it from my memory. It was also the last song my mother and I listened to right before she died. Brings back so many memories.
I was glued to Sesame Street since its inception. I remembered this flower, panning to a cityscape, with this haunting piece of music. I NEVER forgot this segment. Eventually, I found out this was Vivaldi and on a whim, I youtubed Sesame Street Vivaldi Concerto. Bravo for posting this! It's good to know that 40 somewhat years later, this is still brilliant
@hayn3s -- Thank you for posting this video. I remember seeing this video years ago on "Sesame Street" and it having a real impact on me. In reading others' posts, I see that I am not alone. Thanks again and PEACE!
@d5ive I was having an incredibly hard time searching for the title to the piece as well as this clip. I instead searched "beautiful guitar classical music Sesame Street" (forgot about the flowers) and of course, nothing. Until tonight - took mom to this Greek restaurant for the first time with a guitar player playing this piece. I asked him what it was and - voila! - my long search is over!!! Talk about fate :) Thanks so much for sharing this vid! Haven't seen it since I was a kid. :))
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I looked for so long for the song and then the video..... even as a little boy, this ALWAYS made me stop whatever I was doing, watch, and listen...... I think it was the first time I ever appreciated something as beautiful... both in sight and sound... it has touched my heart, my very soul even unto this very day................ it sometimes made me sad then, and always does now
I recognized this song over the sound system of a restaurant back in the 90's and asked the manager if he knew who it was. He showed me the compilation CD and that's how I learned the title. @MeIancholyMan who are you?? almost a year earlier it's like you've written EXACTLY what I would have... I would sit transfixed when this segment came on... I know it's not flamenco, but unbeknowst to me @ age 6, this very piece & the visuals began me on an amazing journey of music and ideas, that continue to evolve... G-d bless Vivaldi, Sesame Street, Jim Hensen et al, golden proportion and friends & a family that embrace all of it! lol and thank you hayn3s!! this made my day ::sniff::
@MeIancholyMan - me too! I remember seeing this on Sesame Street as a boy and the beautiful yet sad feelings it evoked. Have been looking for it ever since.
I am touched by everyone's comments about this clip. Like all of you, this segment has lived with me since seeing it in the early 70's. We all seem to have "gotten it," the message of melancholy, sadness, observation, hope... There seemed to have been a clear intention to communicate this on the part of the artists who put it together. With something like this in the world, there has to be hope.

Wow!! This video brings back memories. I used to love it as a child and have always since referred to it as "the butterfly song" on sesame street though apparently there are no butterflies in it... thank you!!

Not sure if anyone knows who played this... but it wouldn't surprise me if the masterful hand of John Williams played this....
not the composer JW, the classic guitarist
classical guitar as this, as Andres Segovia, as the Cavatina by JW in The Deer Hunter always makes me cry...
