Every time I think I can make it through this clip without tearing up, I hear Alberts "You're not allowed to do that..." and it starts to hit home all over again.
@IethargicAnarchist Their time was up. He doesn't kill because he enjoys it. He does it because it's his job and it would be a silly world if people didn't die when they were killed.
@rthompson39 "SOD YOU, THEN," Death said. He turned, and noticed the fish salesman. With a snarl Death reached out and stopped the man's heart, but He didn't take much pride in it.
The Colour of Magic, page 78. Notice that Death himself is the cause, rather than simply taking the man's soul as in later books. Like I said, he's come a long way.
@Jjvalour Actually Death from from the original Twilight Zone series episode "Nothing in the Dark" was very awesome, too. He still did his job, but did it with true compassion for an old woman who had nothing left and was no longer living, just stuck in an endless, horrible limbo of her own making.
This scene just cements how wonderful Death is. TV Tropes makes it sad again by suggesting this is what Death wishes he could do, instead of his other job. :(
Man, I tear up every time I see this scene. Death is by far my favorite character in this entire series. He seems to know compassion better than most humans, and he's DEATH. Says something about human nature, doesn't it?
@FantasticalWonder That even in our own mortality that there is hope for us? That even that which we fear most is still capable of kindness? Surely that's what you mean.
@ariandynas I was just pointing out how ironic it was that the immortal anthropormorphic personification of Death seems to have more compassion than most humans. XD But your points were good too! "That even that which we fear most is still capable of kidness," I like that one. XD
@Nanomachinist: What about Death in The Sandman? She's cute, and friendly. Granted, she probably doesn't sound like Christopher Lee, but you can't always get what you want in death.
@Nanomachinist What you wrote reminded me of something about Death. That he's not all that bad. He relieves the less fortunate of this world of their pain and suffering.
Which already tells us Pratchett's humanist stance on euthanasia - which is not very politically correct. It's amazing how subtle he is about the most serious of matters.
@Nanomachinist If only the characters he's created could go on a crazy adventure to save him from Alzheimer's so that he can keep breathing life into their world... now that would be EPIC!
If this scene doesn't get.....dust....in your eyes, you're not Human and have no soul...
Discworld Death is, IMHO, the *definitive* Death, I can't imagine Death in any other way, when it's my time to shuffle off this mortal coil, I hope that Death is like Discworld Death
@MacTechG4 Terry gets a lot of letters that say that ... causes him to go and stare at a blank wall for several hours i gather ... i do agree with you though such a Death would be a plesant last experiance
@MacTechG4 he is in quite a way. hard to explain other than i had died once before and was brought back. i couldve sworn he said, false alarm, your free to go when i woke up. CPR is a kicker. football player in school jumped into the pool when i was comin up. he was a lineman and landed on my head. KOed me. they said i was out for 10 minutes.

One Person has apparantly no soul.
This scene is just touching. One of many scenes that make the novel and the movie just great and something i need to see once a year. At least.

He's come a long way from the Colour of Magic, where he'd kill a bystander for the hell of it, hasn't he?

@IethargicAnarchist It makes sense; it was in Mort that he really started to catch his lifelong case of humanity.

THERE'S NO BETTER PRESENT THAN A FUTURE.
See, Discworld the only series where Death himself can be not only compassionate, but still Death.
God, I wish they'd make a Reaperman one...Death is (One of the) the best character(s) and Reaperman was all about him.

Death, the finest surgeon for the mortally injured, the greatest comfort of the dying, the kindest of doctors, the reaper man who cares for his crop.

Here's hoping Discworld's right about Death. If there's anyone I'd want to collect my soul when I die, it's him.
