  • Conservatives (Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell): $42 billion deficit. Result: 1993 Election. The Liberals, led by Jean Chrétien, won a strong majority in the House and formed the next government of Canada. Conservatives suffered the most lopsided defeat for a governing party at the federal level and managed to hold only 2 seats in the parliament.

Liberals (Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin): $12 billion surplus.

Conservatives (Steven Harper): $56 billion deficit and rising. Result: 2011 Election.

  • It should be said that, because we are already running a deficit, the government is BORROWING money to fund those corporate tax cuts, and the rest of us tax payers are paying interest on that borrowed money. Imagine taking out a loan yourself in order to give money to a profitable corporation (because only profitable corporations pay taxes). It sounds crazy, but that is exactly what Stephen Harper is FORCING us to do.

  • Sigh, Canada has one of the lowest corporate taxes, this is a GOOD thing.

A low corporate tax is incentive for international corporations to do businesses in Canada.

When international businesses expand into Canada, they will hire a lot of Canadian workers and open up a lot of job opportunities.

Stephen Harper is not stupid, do you really think he would lower the corporate tax if all he'll get out of it is loss of public support and increased cost of living?

  • MY CANADA!!!!!

  • Bush did tax cut for the rich for eight years and we all know how that turned out. How about we cut taxs for all ppl making under 70k a year and rais the minimum wage.

Enough with tax cut and corporate welfare.

  • Nice try, USA has the highest corporate tax rate in the world, how's that working out for them? Liberal policies down south are sure working out good aren't they?

  • cancel the tax cuts and increase their contributions to the health care. Its their factory's and careless attitude to the environment that leads to a great percentage of sickness While we are on that line put all the green tax burden on their shoulders as well. Its their factory's quest to protect their bottom line that is destroying the planet, not you and I ,and our vehicles.

  • I remember the good old days when gas was like $.70 and I'm only 18!!!!

  • Do you remember when they got rid of incomes trusts because they said they werent paying tax, so why are we now giving a tax cut to corporations.

Why not spend the money on paying off the 50B we spent on a few banks and cars.

  • Is not my Canada for sure, and if Harper is not kicked out this will turn into America as we can expect to kiss bye bye to gun control, bring the death penalty back, outlaw abortions and make our health system illegal. Harper is just waiting to show his real side and we must not allow him to do so.

  • If you live in Ontario you are probably having 'de-ja vu' right now. Kevin Paige is shining the light on these reform/con crooks and hopefully people will listen.

This is exactly what happen in Ontario, the numbers just didnt add up and real economists challenged them and sure enough the 'balanced books' ended up being a $6 billion deficit. Lying Jim Flarhety, Enron John Baird, Fake lake Clement are all in place. Add Harper and the reformers and god help us.

  • Its about time the liberals started fighting back. Harper has been left unchallenged for too long and has done enough destruction to our country both internally and internationally to last several lifetimes.

To all those agreeing with the tax breaks for the corps. name me one time that this proved to be the case. It just doesnt happen and shame on you for being so easily fooled.

  • As someone once said: The trickle down theory only works for eavestroughs and fire hydrants.

  • The trickle down effect sooo 'republican'. Give billions of $ to the multi-national corps. and cross our fingers they keep the money here & help everyday Canadians. Really Harper really. Thousands of real Canadians that are hurting wish you could show them this kind of generosity.

  • Frankly, I'm surprised the Liberals allowed free commenting on this video.

  • some of you are confusing income tax, and corporate income tax. why? i dont know.

however, i cant say allowing corporations to use that many to not create jobs, but rather, offer and sustain outrageous wages for their officers that far exceed the corporations average salary. who here analyzes any business's balance sheet to see how many worthwhile full time jobs are created?

  • If you live in Ontario and notice that EVERYTHING you do or buy is way more expensive, you have no one to blame but McGuinty and his taxes.Thats going to hurt the federal libs. Your provincial and municipal government's have their hand in your pocket way more than the federal government. All three are way too bloated and over-paid. We need to reduce govt sizes at all levels by at least half. They're all a bunch of useless bums. Go get real jobs and contribute something meaningful to society.

  • You have to realise: lower corporate taxes allow for more jobs. More jobs means lower unemployment and a better economy.

  • @brettcaven This is not, however, the only way to stimulate job production. If you consider that our rates are already quite competitve if compared to say, the US (We have a flat 18% [perhaps a scaled rate would be better?] while the americans have a floating rate that starts at 15% and goes up to 35% for companies making more than 18 million a year) there are perhaps much better ways to borrow and spend money that directly impacts the people intended.

  • An interesting ad, not sure it's entirely accurate but hopefully it works well.

  • Now this I like! There has been enough corporate welfare for a while. It's time to halt the increasingly rapid transfer of wealth from average Canadians into the hands of a few and privileged at the top. Trickle down economics has NEVER worked. Stick it to 'em Iggy!

  • @ckilgour Great, that's exactly what regular Canadians needs: savings for shareholders. Forget about that. I need those tax cuts more than they do. I need them to pay for my retirement, and to pay my mortgage, and to pay for my kids school. I think those shareholders can get by with one less BMW in their five car garage.

  • @cecinestpasunmail If you're saving for retirement, chances are you have an RRSP or corporate plan. In either case, your pension plan is likely heavily exposed to the success or failure of Canadian companies. As corporate Canada goes, so goes the stock exchange, and so go our collective pension plans. Most shareholders of corporations do NOT have 5 Bimmers. They are regular folks who either own a small business, or invest in stocks or mutual funds.

  • "Giving YOUR tax dollars to the largest corporations?"

What kind of accounting is that? Tax cuts simply allow taxpayers to keep more of THEIR OWN money. In the case of corporate tax cuts, the benefit will be that the corporation will either be able to re-invest to grow its business (creating more jobs) or pass the savings on to its shareholders who, after paying tax on the dividend, will be free to use that money in the greater economy.

  • @ckilgour The Conservatives want to proceed with these cuts while Canada is running the largest deficit in history. That means Canada would be borrowing on behalf of all Canadians to finance these cuts, and Canada will be in deficit longer, while individual Canadians pay higher income taxes - if they have a job.

As it stands, your trickle-down argument doesn't go very far. The Harper corporate tax cuts are a recipe for the rich to get richer while the middle class foots the bill.

  • @DougaldLamont The trickle down argument is only an ancillary (and I agree debatable) benefit. The principal benefit of lowering corporate taxes is so that we keep the industry we have and encourage more industry to come to Canada. That increases employment for all.

  • Corporate profits are up while hiring is still down. It's the common man that needs help Mr. Harper not your corporate friends.
