@toastedhippo You might have notice that we used a sequenced drum and backing loop. Ty had a hard job with the piano arrangement because the backing was just looping round in a 2 bar loop, but the arrangement was more complex than that of a two bar loop.
@blairbooth So at 3.07 he went out of sync. Because I had worked on the arrangement I knew it very well with all its idiosyncrasies and Ty looks to me to count him in. He missed the cue, I played the string run and cued to sing which he did with me on the BVs....Billy was lost and smiles, then recovers with a big vocal truly Wild & Terrified!
@blairbooth I feel like a proper tit now, but thanks for clarifying this. Bizarrely though, had it not been for that major/minor 3rd clash, it would still have worked. Please don't take offence at my comment - i've played this song more than any of my other favourites recently and it is absolutely brilliant. You were all amazing.
@toastedhippo Nah, I didn't take offense on the contrary I find it amazing your the only one who has noticed or at least mentioned it! You know I said to Billy, that with a couple of tweaks and just marrying up the piano arrangement with the loop it all would have been much simpler.
@blairbooth Funny, during the rehearsals we knew it was a problem and the guitarist said, 'I just follow' it's your problem. Luckily the cameras were off me, during the point at which I was trying to conduct Ty back in!!! Ah Bless, great times! And you most certainly are not a tit!! All the best, Blair
@toastedhippo SOOOOOO Much Missed Is Our Billy...........BRILLIANT Video"s.......And CHECK Out What Ive Written On the "Pain In Any Language" Clip On YT......Tell me What You Think! Will Await Your Thoughts!!....Continue to RIP Billy x
I saw The Associates in the second half of the 80s, a few years after their peak - hence the audience was interested, but not prepared to be automatically adulatory. Their excellence and his amazing aura and vocal power had the crowd in raptures long before the end of the band's set, and howling for more long after their encores. Unforgettable.
This shows in another way entirely just what a huge talent BM was...and taken far, far too soon.
He is crying out to God in this song, how prophetic that he really was suffering and probably tired to deal with his emotional pain but took and overdose of pulls after his mom died. This song has passion, his cry out to God was real and from the heart,
Only after listening to this about 20 times, did i go and look up the words. This song is a cry out to GOD for a man who was struggling with his choices in life. Knowing that Billy took an OD of drugs, this song is all that more significant. It was sung from his own real pain..
Tragedy to lose such a talent.I was in Dundee when he passed. Was numb for weeks.I still drag the auld records oot and blast Billy's angelic, other-worldly voice, into the atmosphere !
Absolutely beautiful. Billy is one of the finest singers this country has ever produced. I never saw him perform live...I did have tickets to see The Associates in 1982 but it was cancelled, and never got the opportunity to see him again - a big, big regret.
I remember recording this show because i knew billy was going to be on it. The performance blew me away..but i lost the video years ago and thought id never get to see it again...thank you so much for posting this it brings back so many memories.
Absolutely spine tingling, sigh inducing, transcendent beauty from Billy- nobody hit the certain spot he did while singing. So gorgeous it hurts to think that this sound is now silent, but it's a blessing to continue to dive into the music.
What a great voice!! Im tryin 2 learn more abt Billy Mckenzie/The associates my uncle has told me loads about them so any input wud be good!! Thanks!!
Thank you again and forever Blair, what a wonderful reminder of Billy's brilliance, but it also took great musicians to bring out that *sparkle* he had,and you did that with spades, long live Billy MacKenzie, alive in our hearts, forevermore, thanks to the likes of you :)
This song is so beautiful - each time I listen/view this viedo I love it more & more.
Gosh, Billy you are missed...It's been more than ten years since his passing and I feel his love every time I hear his music. What an incredible legacy he left his fans...Love is eternal.
Well, I'm not going to rest until more people recognise the originality of this man. Thanks to BBC Scotland for the retrospective some time ago. Just listen to the man. For me he's up there with Frank as someone who gives meaning to song.
Billy Mackenzie was too out of the spotlight for his/our own good so its much appreciated to view lesser known songs like this. Better than the album version
Well done to the keyboard player imitating the xylophone on 3:18 for cocking up. The pianist clocks it and looks up shortly afterwards.

very very hard to make timeless music, and people like Billy, Mark Hollis, Ian Curtis managed to do it so so well
