  • THIS DIESEL CAT LASTS 4 years and costs 5000 USD

buy a clean diesel as a used car I DARE YOU!

  • Ted is my hero

  • I'm not impressed by the Jetta TDIs emissions or oil economy. I say oil economy because diesel uses more oil than gas.

  • Diesels are a lot cleaner than gasoline engines; I can even say that about my 27 year old Mercedes 240D. CO2 emissions are much less than with a gasoline engine. Diesel engines also have an efficiency of 27% while gasoline engines have an efficiency of 17%. Which do you think I'd rather drive? My nearing 30 year old Mercedes which gets 35-40 mpg.. it does fine by me. :)

  • DIESEL DIESEL DIESEL DIESEL DIESEL DIESEL DIESEL

  • Way to use environmentally friendly coffee cups, hypocrites.

  • HOW ABOUT puttin a cofee filter on EACH of the TOUAREG's EXAUST pipe's???, the new TDI is clean...but not that clean!...and did u clean the BENZ's exaust before running the test?....idiot...the exaust pipe of the BENZ has ton's of reziduu on the exaust......TEST IRRELEVANT!

  • Major fail that nobody saw this before. Since the touareg's exaust is not a true dual, the pipes come out form a common resonator in the back, so if you clog one hole, the exhaust goes thru the other.

  • hey dumbass put the coffee filter on ahead of the diesel soot particulate filter and the new engine will be DIRTIER

  • Wow, no contest, you win the stupid comment of the day.

Since you seem to know nothing about cars, no it would not be dirtier -- even without the particulate filter. The new TDI engines use a common rail fuel injection which atomizes fuel for a more complete burn, therefore less soot and other emissions getting released in the exhaust. Look it up.

Please know something about cars before you comment.

  • I am a fully certified volvo and cummins diesel technician, and have ran a new 2009 common rail hino diesel engine in the shop without the DPF on the exhaust and it will smoke you out of the shop in 15 minutes. And a 1995 12.1L volvo diesel engine will run for 2 hours before it smokes you out. I would appreciate it if you would take the time to remove the DPF and find this out, please make a video of a new diesel car running with the exaust disconnected and if you are right i will believe you.

  • Well I didn't make this video so it'd be hard for me to prove you wrong with another video.

I don't doubt what you're saying or that you know your shit -- but given that both engines are PROPERLY TUNED, a new TDI Clean Diesel with common rail injection should be much cleaner than an older design even without the particulate filter.

ps I don't have a tdi or a vw I have a volvo so keep em running. Though it sounds like you work on commercial engines. ltr

  • they should have had ted drink the coffee, then we could have seen if the old diesel melts your face or something.

  • everyone drives diesels in europe

  • Anyone else notice that you can see the Mercedes running, but yet, they don't show the vw running?

For all we know, it's clean because the engine wasn't even running.

  • Or maybe you "see" the Mercedes running because it's kicking out smoke and is loud as f*ck and you don't *see* the VW running because it's clean and quiet. Who knows? Put a filter over the exhaust of most modern cars and it'll prob be clean. The point of the vid seems to be that diesel isn't dirty anymore like it used to be. I had a Rabbit diesel once and holy f it was a smoker.

  • Yes, but my point is, they should show the vw running...since they didn't I have a hard time believing it.

  • You can do this test yourself. Put a coffee filter over a new gas car's exhaust (as long as it's LEV) or a new TDI diesel for 10 mins and neither will show anything. Put a filter over an old diesel and it will get dirty as hell. I think that's kinda cool.

  • But it the fine print says not to do this test (0:35).

I don't doubt that it's possible...I just find it funny that they make it a point to show the old diesel running but don't bother with the new one.

  • Everything fun in life involves ignoring the fine print.

Not sure why you think the new one isn't running. Have you driven a new TDI? They're very quiet. The reason the Merc's filter is flapping is because the exhaust output isn't as smooth as a new car.

Any new gas or clean diesel car will have a clean filter. Any diesel that doesn't have a particulate filter will have a filthy filter.

  • Well that's not really fair, they were testing it against a 1980 something mercedes. Really, it's a demonstration as to how far we've come from our past diesels.

  • Listen Being a Long Term Diesel Technician, u Folks need to focus on Gasoline versus Diesel Emmissions Only. The Public gets the Wrong Perception also :( GO VW & Mercedes

  • the point isnt to compare a new and old car. the point is to prove that diesel technology has come extremely far since its first uses in mass produced cars. why is everyone such a hater on VW?

  • Jeezus thank you someone has a brain.

  • Obviously if you compare a 2010 Touareg with a 197X Mercedes... Makes no sense...

  • Umm.... duh, of course a New Volkswagen will be cleaner than a 30+ year Mercedes...

  • How is this in anyway a 'Dare' not very daring to me? Also i would hope that a car 30 years newer is going to be cleaner. what a pointless test.

  • idk why people are saying the other car is old and thats why it's so smokey, okay take a new diesel american truck and see what happens with that...they smoke brand new...

  • Say yes to dirty diesel

  • So lame... MB stopped making non-turbo cars in '82. So this is at newest a 27 year old car. It has no catalytic converter, no electronic anything etc, etc.

Lets compare how many emissions are produced in creating a new car. How much oil it takes to make all the plastic in the new car, lets make that pompous ass drink a cup of that.

  • It's W115-chassis something, can't really see the trunk badge but most probably it's a 300D which makes it a 1974-1976 model

  • Not that Im anti-diesel, i love them, dont want anything but another diesel ever again. I can re-tune the ECM im my duramax to be as clean as that Tourag if i wished. And thats no fuckin joke! Its been done.

  • What a fucking joke,

You know all underground mining equipment is either electric or diesel powered, because a GAS/LP/etc. engines posion the air with carbon monoxide, yet diesels produce NO carbon m. Most diesels are relativly clean. What makes no sense to me is, lets put DPF filters on new diesels so the exhaust is a tad bit cleaner but at the cost of burning 2X more fuel than a non DPF diesel, thats fucking stupid, what about global oil shortage.... huh what?

  • OMG you are clueless.

DPF gives you 95% less emissions you call that a tad bit?

Reg diesels put off Carbon Monoxide under load. Look it up.

2X more fuel? VW TDI has a Guinness record for 58+ MPG with the DPF.

And Audi is kicking ass all over the place with their diesel race car cause it gets better mileage.

I'm waiting for the Audi S4 TDI it's gonna rock the world.

  • I've never seen smoke come out of the tailpipe of my '83. I probably also get better mileage than that Toureg.

  • Diesels age like fine wine. You can by the two buck chuck made last year or you can buy the $300 20yr old reisling.

  • I'll have the Classic Mercedes Coffee any time over that androgynous piece of overly high-tech tasteless coffee..

  • I'll have to second, third, and fourth that!!!! I love my 300D's.

  • yeah and people love being behind you when you blow smoke all over the place

  • ... What? I'm sorry, but in my TDI, I only blow smoke, and when I say blow smoke I mean haze, when I'm flooring it. How often do I floor it? Very seldom. I have a 2003 ALH, which is quite decently modded for power and yet, I still have very little visible smoke at WOT.

  • Two things, that car was not designed as a clean diesel. Also its modified. It kinda invalidates your point dont you think?

  • The point is, that I drive a diesel car with power modifications, stock turbo, and a partially clogged intake manifold and emit smoke only a WOT.

  • If my memory serves correctly ALH is fuel injection upgrade? If it is injecting too much fuel for the amount of air, you will have unburned fuel exit and if you are at WOT, the cat will not burn it in time and thus smoke. It will burn clean if it is stock, because the is the way it designed to be clean.

  • @dh3790 ALH is the engine code prior to the PD engines.

  • How bout you get behind me and see how much I'm smoking. (not much) A properly tuned diesel will hardly smoke at all. It's the overfueled ones that are smoking, which is unburnt fuel.

  • Comment removed

  • How bout I don't get behind you you big pervert. And don't even think of getting behind me either. So sick.

  • You know what I meant, sicko.

  • Diesels have never had high CO emissions.

Can a diesel really be clean? Yeah, after you add a $3000 particulate filter and catalytic converter to the exhaust!

  • Ya, no joke! Take all the DPF crap off that VW and it will do the same thing!

Even a so called "dirty diesel" is still cleaner than most gas engines.

  • That car is almost 30 years old. Let's put the TDI up against something built within the past 2 years.

  • TDI rocks !
