She's not playing Mimi, she's not feeling the character. Besides that, I don't like her voice - but that's personal taste i guess. She can't handle this song, this role, this play. Rent is too intense for her. She's allright (maybe even good, if you like the voice) in casual plays like HSM in stuff, but not in this. Certainly not this, I wonder if she knows what she's singing about, really. Nice try, but no, it was a mistake casting her for Mimi.

In fact the entire performance she was on and off, on and off constantly. She was good for some parts, then kinda sucked for others, it was constant. And on stage you are supposed to be ON the entire time. She needs practice. Nuff said.

And yeah this was her first time back on stage after 11 yearsand yeah it was probably due to first day jitters and a combination of nervousness. I could see that and I'm not entirely made of stone. But still a mediocre performance is a mediocre performance. In fact this production of Rent in general was kinda underwhelming all together. I give her props for trying but I agree with everyone in saying that she was an utter miscast for the role.

It was pretty mediocre. And I wanted to like it. I really did. I gave her the benefit of the doubt at I wanted to like her performance. But I didn't. And it pains me to say that. What's sad though is that there are parts in the song, like in light my fire where she is on and off. Meaning that she at least had the potential to play the role right. But she fell flat.

Not that it's an excuse but a filmed version of the song where you can just pick up from where you messed up is different from singing live un-edited.
