  • This piece is definitely played WAY too fast for me. I play this piece, but it should be slower, like, A LOT slower, lol, not as fast as a Rag or something. Rachmaninoff plays it like his own piece, aggressive, in a good way, and very adrenaline-y.

But Rachmaninoff plays at TOP speed, it's amazing! I just think this piece is meant to be played as it is- a WALTZ.

  • Perhaps if Rachmaninov had named this splendid recording Chopin / Rachmaninow waltz in E minor many melomanes could sleep more peacefully ...

  • i love this fast playing and omiting repeats of rach. the piece got an integrity.

  • I dont care if Chopin wanted this piece to be played slower. the only thing i CARE, IS THAT HE MAKES ME FEEL SOMETHING. Cause music is maded to feel, and not to say the others: -hey you're not playing like a stupid piece af paper says.

  • @fakelove7272 I aggree with you about the magic art of recreating music from written papers . If the pianist is a great composer like Rachmaninov was , he can better trasmit to others his personal life feelings even when playing other musician's compositions.

  • I think the reason that he played so fast is that we can hear the "HIDDEN MELODY". Listen to the first part, for example.

  • I think that although Rachmaninoff was amazing the piece is suppose to be slightly slower. bUt other wise I like how the begining is played very fast.

  • Maybe it is not Chopin, but virtuosity is double edge sword: every one wants to show own skills. However, thanks for posting it.

  • Yes he can do it, but is not Chopin.... A virtuoso would perform his own or others’ pieces publicly in a technical way, showing off his talent but sometimes their performances were too far away from what the compositions required. Is very impressive but not Chopin.

  • @panmarkos

It would be better to say that Racmaninov here is far away from what we now suppose must be a Chopin's waltz performance. .No Chopin's records playing his own music available. Never forget that Racmaninov was a great composer and not only a pianist .

  • @allegroconmoto Grunfeld, Sauer, Rosenthal, Koczalski, and other pianists who recorded this early on take it a good deal slower. As much as I love Rachmaninov's playing, I think he's over the top here and outvoted by many other greats, some with close links to Chopin.

  • it's too fast but he can do it.. so what?

  • stand firm and don't fear fits of giddiness !

  • I'm looking for the sheet music for Chopin waltz in E minor

  • A mi personalmente no me gusta la interpretación, no es solo por ser muy rápida, sino que además el tempo se vuelve irregular y se nota falta de precisión, y pierde carácter.

  • Cierto, cierto

  • This is way too fast, but of course this is rachmaninov.

  • yes he can play fast or slow depending on is aestetic purpose and not for virtuosity ostentation

  • Rachmaninoff not only has been a great pianist but one of the most important pianists of the history of piano playing.

  • i can understand that but i never found his interpretations of certain pieces very exciting.

  • thanks heaven he as recorded a large part of his own compositions : I am sure between these jewels you will find something that will excite you.

  • yes i have heard many o his own recordings and my most favorite would have to be piano concerto no.3

  • o.k. listen to the piano concerto n 4,the etudes tableaux op 33 and 39,the sonata for cello and piano and thePaganini variations ...

  • I think his Chopin miniatures are the best out there. He plays it at this speed while maintaining all the elegance and he can keep the left hand legato with no pedal. I see how you can think it is to fast though.

  • Only Rachmaninov could play a 3 minute piece in 1:46 lol. A bit too fast for my taste, but definately played brilliantly.

  • @BenGabbay i'll suggest one more song where he plays much faster than suggested tempo...that too is an excellent song...the maiden's wish by chopin/liszt....

  • @BenGabbay

Most of the repeats were skipped; the only sections that repeated was the part around 1:10 to 1:20 and whenever it showed up before that time.

  • I think he was brilliant, but it is too fast!!! i love this piece however :D

  • a splendid ironical interpretation that run at break-nek speed and ends with four chords as a conclusive grimace !

  • A little too fast and the left hand is played a little too strongly.

  • That is too fast.

  • it depends on the peculiar Rachmaninov's expressive goal never amiable or sugary in Chopin's waltzs.

  • Superb!

  • Certainly one of the best pianists ever! Bravo! TY.
