I can see why Norah uses her mother's last name. She gets so much criticism as is, but if she used her father, Ravi Shankar's last name she'd always be unfairly compared just like all famous people's children. She may not be a famous sitar player who worked with The Beatles like her father, and she may not be the average pop star, but she's amazing in her own way-
fantastic, i wish Norah would start making her own songs like this. i liked her debut album, but can't say the same about her last 3 albums. she's definitely talented, intelligent and musical though, i think it's just a matter of time/age before she starts putting out real gems
Jesus in this song is actually used as an expletive. As if speaking to crying woman/man/kid "Jesus... don't cry". Or as if to stub your toe; "Jesus, my toe".
Jeff Tweedy made the comment before singing the song at a live performance "Jesus the expletive, not the person".
The irony of using Jesus is one of the best things about the song, I'd say. It's a buddy song about sticking with someone who was down on their luck. There's a nice dichotomy there with the idea that people lean on Jesus. I get the feeling that Jesus is a metaphor in the song for the people we think will never break.
@jhgb89 I'm not sure you know what you're talking about... actually, I AM sure that you don't know what you're talking about. You didn't listen to the words.
Wow, Great video, brilliant quality, Norah's on fire. Anyone know if this is a cover, or a song penned by Norah? Watching that in full screen, i felt like i was lucky enough to be there.
jdsmith9, I totally agree with you - she is the greatest female musician of all time! I was privileged to see her at the Orpheum in LA 2 days ago - was totally blown away!!! She is so AMAZING!!! I can't wait to see her live again!!!
@austinlopez84 Actually, that's not entirely true. She does write some of her own music. True, she doesn't write all of it, but it's wrong to say she doesn't write her own music period.
The beauty in song writing and poetry is that there is no ONE meaning but what you interpret out of the words and melody. what you hear in your heart even when it doesn't necessarily make sense. I suggest you close your eyes and listen to it over and over gain and see what it speaks to you... will be far more interesting than any of us trying to analyse it
Rather than literally talking about Jesus the person, the songwriter is using "Jesus" as the expression people use when they are overwhelmed and don't know how to deal with a situation. At least that's what I get from it.
Norah covers Wilco! Very cool. Would have preferred to hear her play it on the piano or Wurly, but that's ok. I just love her voice and style and love the lyrics to Jesus, etc..
Norah I heart <3 YOU! :) Let me know if you ever need a shaman to go on the road with ya Shaman Ziggy

I was under the impression she was addressing Jesus
Jesus, don't cry
You can rely on me honey
therefore it's really not in vain if i'm interpreting correctly
also, it's "in vain". it would only be "in vein" if it was floating through your blood or something.
but perhaps I am wrong

Thank you, i heart radio, for ruining the end of the song with your stupid noisy logo.
You couldn't hold off 'til she was done singing?

didn't like this song. it's putting Jesus' name in vain. don't like that. but that's MY opinion.

@jhgb89 I'm not sure you know what you're talking about... actually, I AM sure that you don't know what you're talking about. You didn't listen to the words.
This song has nothing to do with Jesus.
tombuttner 1 year ago 2
@tombuttner she mentions Jesus's name, doesn't she?
jhgb89 1 year ago
@jhgb89 Yeah, and how exactly does that qualify for being "in vein"?
And even if it was(which it wasn't), who cares, its a song. Get over it.
Oh, btw: Jesus was Jewish.

I love Norah, but I dont understand this song at all, doesn't make any since to me. can somebody explain what the lyrics mean please???
JAQ4 1 year ago
@JAQ4 I think it's a simple play on words.
Rather than literally talking about Jesus the person, the songwriter is using "Jesus" as the expression people use when they are overwhelmed and don't know how to deal with a situation. At least that's what I get from it.

@JAQ4 So I guess you could say it's a "play on words". My favorite line is "Our love is all of God's money".
