Esse Mallamoozoo é uma viúva frustrada e não entende nada de F1. Como pode dizer que Mansell era o terceiro melhor piloto da década de 80?? Só podia ser fã do Senna um cara que não entende nada de F1 assim.
Not really- chassis technology has advanced so much in past 15 years, that cars are infinitely smoother these days than 20 years ago- a dry race without stopping is almost like driving an entire wet race without stopping 20 years ago- so tyre wear is not an issue any more- even without pitstops. (It will be slightly more an issue than last year but nowhere near what it was 20 years ago.)
You give him TOO MUCH credit - he is the most over-rated driver of all time(probably top 10 but that's all)
Schumacher it must be said was good at adapting to different handling characteristics.
BUT that is tempered by the fact that in his era, so-called imbalance (understeer/oversteer) was of a much milder nature - technology had narrowed the range of characteristics a driver had to deal with. Furthermore - being in the refuelling era - preserving tyres was eliminated from the required skillset of drivers - Schui in the 80's would have been a tyre wrecker and not as cmpetitive as in the 2000's.
A crucial factor rarely considered, is the characteristics of the car. Prost with a slightly understeering car was a match for Senna over a whole race (not qualifying though). BUt Prost with any other balance characteristic was not quite there - whereas Senna could drive any goddamned thing - slight or huge understeer or oversteer, dead neutral (most difficult) - Gugelmin once said "If we were racing double decker buses Senna would still win."
indeed - Senna was from another Universe - can't be compared. Someone once said "Schumacher is the best human driver but Senna is God". I don't agree with the Schumacher bit - but the quote is really saying Senna was superhuman.
I think Prost is the best human driver, by far, then a very close call between Mansell and Schui. (Fangio and Clark I never saw so not included. Villeneuve not considered due to early death - but possibly had the speed of Senna himself, if not the whole package.)
Mansell was definitely the 3rd best driver of the 80's - on his day he lifted his game to push the 2 all time greats Senna and Prost - so he was certainly good - but he wasn't at that level consistently - thats the difference.
One has the feeling Mansell ran away from partnering Prost again in 93 much as Prost ran away from parthering Senna again in 1990.
But that may have been a mistake - with many wet races in 93 - Mansell still on a high may have actually beaten Prost, who was winding down.
2 things. First I think Prost was scared of Senna. Senna out paced Prost on many occasions when they were teammates the first time. Having had the previous year off when Senna was at his peak would have meant a lot of work on Prost's behalf. 2 Prost was a smart man. Smart people don't make the same mistake twice. Ayrton Senna forever!!!!
I wouldn't say was "scared" of Senna in the whole mean of the word "scare".... I'd call it UTMOST RESPECT rather than fear.... As Ayrton himself privately told to his friend Bruno Galvao: "This French.... He's Fantastic!... He's The Best!". I don't think Senna was scared at all, but He KNEW PRETTY WELL that his real match in F1 was Prost..... So I'd say that none of them were that "scared" or something similar, but both knew that to beat each other, They had to use all their weapons....
But do you remember that under pressure, He used to crack quite often while Prost always stay cool. Adelaide 86 is just an example, He lost it not because He had a puncture (in fact He had) but due to Prost's trick going to an unplanned pitstop so as made Goodyear engineers tell Williams that Mansell could go on the track safely because Prost's tyres were still in perfect shape. But Prost's tyres were in perfect shape, not Mansell!!! These details separates a hell of a driver from a genius....
A picture tells a thousand words and a video tells a whole book!
If anyone thinks the modern drivers are as good as the 80's and 90's drivers - just watch this video c/w in-car video from the Abu Dhabi race 2 days ago.
CASE CLOSED!
The sport has become a disgrace to the memory of its former greatness. After more than 25 years I am finished with F1. Because it is no longer real driving - it's just a walking zombie- a pale shadow of its former self. The cars are just go-karts now. It's over!

Prost, many proclaims, victory no one in '91, nevar a clear victory ahead Ayrton, in Estoril the only time ahead ayrton win by Nigel, two years in Ferrari failed by the professor, better 1 Mansell than 100 Prost
Prost in 1989-90 did victory only when Senna was out; the only driver to beat him was Mansell(Hungaroring 1989 Estoril 1990) Mansell ever Humiliated Prost Piquet Senna during the fight for the victory. Cesare Fiorio the head of Ferrari team had put Prost as fiurst driver, but he was wrong
I agree Mansell was more strong than Prost, he won 4 titles predominantly thanks political agreements, Mansell 2 world titles F1 and Indycar with total supremacy
Prost won 4 titles, and was runner up 4 times as well..... Those titles he lost, were lost by 0.5 points (84), 2 points (83), 6 points (90) and 7 points (81). Almost 8 times World Champion!!! Can you explain why Mansell (with only 1 F1 title driving one of the best cars in history of F1) is above Prost??? Nonsense...
Indeed mate - Prost 8 times 1st or 2nd in 12 years - Schumi just 9 times 1st or 2nd in 15.3 years.
And Schui with the best car more often AND TEAM ORDERS 11 of those 15 - Prost NEVER with team orders and team mates like the mighty Senna and Mansell, and Lauda and even Hill - 8 World Championships between them. My god the more you think about it the more mediocre Schui's paper stats look. In context - they are not nearly as impressive as Senna, Prost, Clark, Fangio
Nigel lost titles himself 1986-1987-1991 because errots of box williams, also 1993 grabbed by Prost over him; Mansell is above Prost for me because he (Nigel) show speed, overtaking that Prost never exhibited; he did races that remain in the history in the book of F1; Jerez 1986 Hungaring 1989 Silverstone 1987, and by the way the best car in the history is the McLaren Honda 1988-1989-1990
omotigre2004, I did never said that Mansell was a bad driver because He wasn't. In fact I consider him as one of the fastest drivers in F1 history, balls of steel, very nice to watch. Maybe I enjoyed his charges even more than Senna's, Prost's or Schuey's charges, OK? he was plenty fast, no worry. But in motoracing, speed is just another thing among all the things required to be at Senna's or Prost's league......
i want to put this in a single opinion prost have enjoy ferrari, at the first atempt of the year in brazil he turns ferrari to get 1 second faster per lap on the very beginning of the season and he won that race dont forget that my friend ferrari if they are smart had then turned to prost from the very beggining ,mansell fast but make a lot of mistakes, include 1991.
Alesi's had some brilliant drives, I agree. His best year was probably '95. His pass on Schumacher at Adelaide was one of the best. He had a wonderful chance at a win in Monaco, too, before his Benetton let him down.
Actually, Benetton had successfully poached Schumacher from Jordan by the time the Italian GP rolled around. I believe that was Jean Alesi in the sister Ferrari that Prost passed. :)
yeah, it should be like in the early 90's where teams could choose the configuration they wanted for their engines to use. i think 3.0 liters should come back. it's F1 after all, which means high speed in corners but also in straights. in my opinon, V10 are the engines that should have been limited to 19k rpm, not the V8's. it would be so nice to hear a mixture of V8's, V10's and V12's again.
Its not coz they are now same spec that makes them boring (thats actually good as a sport if everyone has similar machinery) but because they are so easy to drive compared to the brutal beasts of the 80's and 90's.
incredible stuff and nice overtake. notice the rev counter as he pumps the throttle at the beginning to keep the engine alive. drivers don't have to do that these days.

In 1980's cars, particular turbos, without regular tyre replacement pitstops- I would have my money on Alain Prost over Schui everytime.

@mallamoozoo Easily... Senna, Mansell,Prost and Alesi would COMPLETELY OWN SHUMI!!!

Just been thinking about it and Prost probably had the hardest time of all F1 drivers over the quality of his team-mates:
80 Watson, 81-82 Arnoux, 83 Cheever, 84-85 Lauda, 86 Rosberg, 87 Johanson, 88-89 Senna, 90 Mansell, 91 Alesi, 93 Hill.
Quite an impressive list!
Over the course of a season, he beat them all but Senna. Can you blame him for not wanting Senna in the same team in 93?
