I played against these guys every year, 87,88,89, don't believe what the movie says, they were not small by any means. In those years the oil business in Texas was huge and Permian would recruit top players to Odessa, offer the parents good paying jobs just to get the kids to play at that school.
@eastwood13 -- Hmm. I was there during those years, and can tell you that your claim is pure BS. I was on the 1989 team as a sophomore (ended up leaving), and was 5'10" and 230 lbs. I was the BIGGEST kid on either the JV or varsity. We did not have large players... at all. Your "recruited players" theory has been debunked so often, I'm amazed that someone would even bring it up again, TWENTY years later.
@Agslions So you're saying as a sophomore you were the biggest kid on the team at 5' 10" 230lbs? ...I'm calling BULLSHIT on that!
I was 6' 2" 185lbs in high school and Permian had kids taller and many pounds heaver than I. As far as the recruiting go's, I don't think the boosters would let you in on the inner workings of their recipe for success, no team is that dominate for that long without some shady under the table deals.
So, just curious... which players were "recruited"? Would love to debunk this one again. -- Also, yes, I was the heaviest kid on the team (Chad Williams, the starting DT on the '89 team, was also 230 lbs). Naturally, there were taller kids, but nobody was heavier. The entire O-line on the '89 title team averaged 195 lbs. Only in the past 8-10 years have I seen Permian average 250-lb kids on the line.
i noticed that NO ONE put the video of Permian vs Marshall when they came to East Texas and took a pretty good whoopin, but its all good...AND southernpride903 had it right, This clip was a bit one sided and Marshall wasno bitch back in the day
@jadyn0606 - Again, as noted below... this clip was put together as part of a Permian season retrospective in 1989... it will be one-sided as it's from the Odessa CBS affiliate.
@southernpride903 - This clip was part of a season retrospective that was put together by the local CBS affiliate at the time... of course it's going to be "one-sided".
The last time I saw Permian play in person was against Houston Yates about 20 some odd years ago and Yates ran to the left, to the right, around, and over Permian and won by about 5 touchdowns...so much for MOJO!
Oh, look. Yates wins a state title over a down year for Permian. Meanwhile, Permian has like 6 state championships and is still relevant. Congrats on your one state title LOL
for all you non fans the real game was 14 to 9 permian was actually winning whole game untill dallas carter had an amazing comeback. And no they werent jerks like in the movie
I have the 1989 Marshall highlight tape. They lost to Permian earlier in the season, but the multi-hundred mile trip probably took it's toll, as it did to Mojo the year before. This game, the game was tied/close at halftime and the Marshall QB went down with an injury.
katy is pry the most nationaly known team in texas and has the best program... other than permian because of the movie... and i hope u knnow that in 88 they lost in the semis the movie is way wrong but still one of the best
lmao.....no yall are not..but yall are a good team for a 4A team. UIL should let yall play Euless or Odessa. In order to be the best in texas/or nation you have to at least played at a national game or won it. So far the two best teams in texas are Odessa Permian(6state 1national) and Euless Trinity(6state2national) oh and south lake caroll. Sorry for the upesting news.
Seriously who gives a fuck? You can be big and still suck ass! I'm 5'9 140 and play QB for Skyline! Now what.
