  • Right, always amazing :)

  • I assume this was on a U.S. TV show. Which one, & any idea who the backing band are?

  • @DickHBox no its THE TUBE from UK Channel 4

  • @DickHBox

Marc Ribot on guitar, Greg Cohen on bass, also I think that's Ralph Carney

  • @evskin506 & @nubient. Thanks peeps. The Tube, another casualty of the suits, like the the John Peel show. Where now can we find the mix of musical genres that these programmes broadcast? Late Junction on Radio3 does very well, but the hours are being being reduced all the time.

  • @DickHBox looks like Francis Thumm on percussion too. This is the Waits army. That stellar cast of characters that helped push his sound forward. But yes, I hear you. Industry is killing the arts and only a drastic change will give us what we want, which is of course, simply good music to be spread and be given a stage... I think.

  • @DickHBox

seriously though, what is with Tom's voice for this show?! It's just CRAZY! He sounds like a demon with emphysema. Especially on Sixteen Shells. Listen to the line "pawn shop marimba" and just look at how the band reacts to the sound of it.

  • well the first song is from swordfishtrombones! Great video though

  • @shawndimery The third song is also from Swordfishtrombones! Only the middle one, Cemetery Polka, is from Rain Dogs.

  • @gabe25591 Yeah I posted that comment after only getting halfway through the video! I realised after

  • @shawndimery Yeah, not a huge problem though, as 16 Shells and In the Neighborhood are the two best songs on Swordfishtrombones! Add them to the tracklist of Rain Dogs and you have yourself a 11/10 perfect album!

  • Most of history's greatest talents are not appreciated for their contribution until many years and decades after their death. For those of us with a keen sense of what defines a true original... we are all blessed to enjoy their talents while they are alive. The rest of the world can sit and spin on the trivialities of Jersey Shore while I enjoy Tom, Bob Schneider, Beck and the other few million that never make double-A rotation on some crapy-assed Clearchannel station.

  • Tom is the best, fuck the rest !!!

  • Just outstanding

  • The first and third songs are from Swordfishtrombones: '16 Shells' and 'In The Neighbourhood'.

  • The first song is from Swordfishtrombones.

  • Long time since I listened to Tom. Aahh the bitter-sweet memories ( or should that be mammories) of youth.

  • Fan since I was 14 - 50 now...you do the math(s)!!! Trouble is he doesn't get out on tour enough so I've seen him live...yet. Saintsboy

  • Tom waits, james hetfield, and the reverand horton heat: i find these three dudes kind of look alike.

  • @TheBalloonHoax All three are awesome.

  • That's Awesome!

  • BADASS

  • Genial, ich habe ihn sogar live sehen dürfen

  • wow, this is so good

  • saw him edinburgh in the 80s a few times good times beefy is playing with zappa r.i.p.

  • geil

  • I love it at 3:21. That's exactly what i would be doing if i was there

  • Genius.

  • What's the name of the very first song in this clip?

  • Comment removed

  • @Zuhzuhzombie "16 shells from a Thirty-Ought Six" off of Swordfishtrombones

  • Terrific going back and seeing these when Waits was younger. And with each passing year he seemed to enrich his performances of these songs. Not many performers make these things just get better and better with each new recreation. Wonderful clip.

  • lol i wanted to hate but really i love this shit lol. the audience doesn't know what the fuck to do lol

  • I know everyone has already said it, but it's amazing that songs with such avant-garde arrangements can still boogie. This arrangement of Cemetery Polka is even more ominous and savage than the one on Rain Dogs and yet it still makes me want to bust a move. Absolute genius.

  • @boredcrab2 16 shells is DEFINITELY from swordfishtrombones

  • what year was this concert??

  • Unbelievable ...

    I was at this venue ... ( Playhouse ,Edinburgh,Scotland )

His whole act blew me away ....

Been a fan ever since ...

On stage, he messes around with the standaed lamp ...

    Fuckin hilarious ...

of course we were all stoned ...

Tom played into the crowd, as he do , wot a show

  • I really don't know why people mention Frank Zappa so much. He apparently was a real ass to Tom Waits and had him be the opening act at his concerts just so Tom could get the flack from the audience and everyone would shout, "WE WANT FRANK" and throw shit at him. I don't think that puts Frank in a great light, at least not for me. And I have never cared for Mr. Zappa besides.

Tom Waits is himself. He doesn't even try to copy anyone. He has influences, but everyone does.

  • @LandoftheShanks you blame Zappa for something some audience did to Tom? Zappa was an ass to Tom waits because Tom waits was his opening act? you make big leaps of thougts and make hasty conclusions.

  • @tchoco actually i go by what tom said in an interview. how do you know it isn't true? you don't. so how can you make the "hasty conclusion" and "big leaps of thoughts" when you have no proof it didn't. think about that before responding next time.

  • let's hear it for the band as well here. only performances prior to waits on this level was zappa. may he rest in peace (only if he wants to)

    bravo.

  • @ThePrincessmouse You can not praise Tom without acknowledging his excellent side men/collaborators. I pull out my copy of Marc Ribot's album now and then.

  • Tom Waits is so much better live. And that's saying alot 0.0

  • For seeing him perfrom is like, well, Makes me think he did 5 years in the Kansas state pen, and really enjoyed it.

  • Every time I watch him perform I get the fever man and wanna' get up and dance.

  • Such savage beauty,

  • exactly.

  • This is just brutal and intense

  • @haraldtheman

    yes, and...

  • you can see the progression from this to the big time stuff..

    wow

    amazing...

  • Great. Really just Great.

  • This clip comes from 'The Tube', which was a successful live UK music show, that ran in the eighties.

If you've never heard of it, it's definately worth checking out - specially for Iggy Pop's appearences.

  • fuckin love cemetary polka

  • Yes !!

  • It is amazing that Tom made such organic music in the middle 80's, when most other popular artists used electronic instruments, like the synthesizer. Really unique for the time it was made, and it still is today.

  • isn't 16 shells off swordfishtrombones?

  • Yes, it is.

  • Right. It is.

In fact the schould be titled "" songs from swordfishtrombones and 1 song from rain dogs." or simply; the mazing tom waits ;D

  • @boredcrab2 hah it is.

  • @boredcrab2 So is "In the Neighborhood."

  • Is this available on a DVD anywhere?

  • The last song is from sordfish trombone.

  • Hi theBPlog! I have a question for you. I really love Tom waits and all his songs, and I was wondering, do you knoe if there's any footage of a tom waits rehearsal? I'd like to see him rehearsing with a band, trying out his songs, I 'd really like to see that

well thanks an greetings from argentina!

  • i love that rain Dogs album... that Cemetary Polka reminds me of Schlitzie the pinhead. Gooble Gobble One Of Us.....

  • tom's the man

  • em fa see ma... pow...right!

  • Where's this video from? It's just an awesome Tom Waits performance.

  • woow! no words!

  • the dopest man on the planet

  • man the drums sets the mood! i love this vid!!!

  • Dunno a thing about Tom Waits but I like the first song here.

  • Last of the real Beat poets

  • First of the real beat poets!

  • Haha. Never heard of Ginsberg, Corso, Ferlinghetti?

  • Well, of course I have! I was just saying, in terms of the original spark, Tom has 'em all beat by a country mile...

  • Not to take away from Tom's ability as a poet and a performer, but I completely disagree with you m0zc0re. You wouldn't know "beat" if it bit you on the ass.

  • Ah... see, I would respect your comment if you didn't devolve into petty youtube meanness...

There is this new concept called irony. It doesn't come across so well without vocal intonations sometimes.

  • @boxcarbluz

    absolutely.

  • Beautiful, Brilliant, Timeless Man, Tom Waits, For sure!

  • most original song in the world

  • Wow, this version of Cementary Polka is epic, you could imagine an army marching into battle while it plays over :)

  • its "16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six"

  • There's 3 songs on this video, cementary polka is the second song.

  • Alter ego and vaudeville make this guy awesome - thank YOU, Tom

  • 2 songs from "Swordfishtrombones", 1 from "Rain Dogs"

  • what concert is that?

  • it was a tv show called the tube, it used to be on channel four in the uk, and was hosted by Jools Holland, its on wikipedia :)

  • wow I love how there is so much going on!

It so well put together and well timed.

    MAGNIFICENT

    remids me of Zappa

  • rain dogs was the first record i bought by waits...its one of his finest and this live is awesome too!

  • Same for me :o)

I still own it (on vinyle). I had made a copy on cassette and used to listen to it on and on in my car :o)

  • can't you people just enjoy the music and the talent of this guy? comparison and 'ripoff' talk sucks major ass.

  • who gives a fuck who's the originator? waits rocks. period.

  • I've been a Beefheart fan for over 40 years and a Tom Waits fan for over 20 and this is NOT a ripoff. They just come from the same muscial place. You wouldn't understand...

  • @MartijnHover agreed. Captain Beefheart was dada and anti-rock while Tom is like cabaret surrealism.

  • @MartijnHover why would we not?

  • @Valholm This was aimed at hochfczundjuhe's post. I am sure you would. :)

  • I love him

    @MartijnHover

  • vocally similar but then Beefheart sorta ripped Howlin Wolf so??? Who's totally original????

  • Great band and outstanding music from Mr.Waits and his crew. Thanks for posting.

  • "Rain Dogs" was more of an umbrella term for anything from Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones. This is music from he wrote when he moved to NYC

    Hope this helps

  • first and last are both from swordfishtrombones...16 shells doesn't not have a home

  • i thought 16 shells was from swordfishtrombones?

  • You're correct. 16 SHELLS FROM A 30.6 is originally on SWORDFISHTROMBONES and later BIG TIME.

  • the 3rd song is not from Rain Dogs, it´s from Swordfishtrombones :)

  • hahahahaha!!! YES!!! RIGHT ON, MAN!!! THEY HAD NO CLUE WHAT THEY WERE DOING, THEY WERE JUST OUT FOR A GROOVE!!!

  • anyone reccomend a tom waits album for me in the blues/rock genre

  • Mule Variations has some great rocking blues like "Get behind the Mule", Real Gone is like Blues meets industrial-like noise + percussion, crazy shit.

To be honest Rain Dogs is a great place to start, perfect balance between accessiblility and creativity :)

  • "Heart Attack & Vine".

  • yeah mule variations would be best for you but orphans has some great shit on it too

  • dont forget 'bone machine'

  • This is one of the best Waits videos out.

  • he so good at setting moods with precusion

  • reaaaaaaaaal good!

  • he has some alternate lyrics in Cemetary Polka after the verse about uncle phil. approx 5:52-6:05

    any clue what they are?

  • Always amazed how this man can take something created with such Chaos and dissonance and make it seem so melodic and harmonic

  • This is incredible video :) pure raw power! enyone know there is a full lenght video in better quality to see? greetings :)

  • Is that You, Lord?

  • I was about to post the very same, dude!

  • he has returned for us! :D

  • Hey this is pretty upbeat! A much more melodic version of 16 Shells than the version I've heard before. NOT WORTHY!...

  • what songs are these?

  • 16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six

    Cemetery Polka

    In the Neighborhood

  • Cemetery Polka is the only one from Rain Dogs. the first and last song are from Swordfishtrombones

  • This is amazing! It really has a spiritual whisper to it that touches my soul. It is an honor to hear him sing.

  • 有難う〜Thanks, Tom Waitsはいいですね〜

  • This is in-effing-credible. Thanks Tom for kicking so. much. ass. Hell yes.

  • That awesome, loping beat from 16 shells sounds even better live. I especially like the groove that percussionist is in.

  • This is the best live Tom Waits I've ever seen. Not even 'Rain Dogs' from Big Time beats this...

  • cool caveman goof

  • the best ever version of sixteen shells and ribots solo one of the best bits of guitar ive ever heard

this was on the same episode of The Tube as REM playing two songs off the Fables album...

and now were stuck with Jools Holland? just wrong

  • I like this version of cemetery polka better than the album version becuase it makes the song just a lot darker, and when he screams in the microphone I couldn't help but laugh. Mr. Waits was my inspiration to start playing piano :D

  • Mine to start playin' guitar ha ha. He really is an incredible source of inspiration.

  • Awesome! Brave, raw music. Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome stuff! Love the percussion, the bass, the voice, the whole band!

  • Now THAT... was a truly evil rendition of Cemetary Polka...

  • Great rhythm from Mr.Waits like a good spirit he improves with age.Love him just love him

  • tom waits tastes best with whisky...and vice versa

  • Love this version of 16 Shells, better than the album version I think.

  • Why is Tom Waits so awesome?

  • cause he wears a hat

  • Pure genius...

  • First song: 16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six (swordfishtrombones)

Second Song: Cemetery Polka (rain dogs)

Third Song: In The Neighborhood (swordfishtrombones)

  • there aint no pretty girls in france!

  • Actually Frank was Tom Wait's father

  • Anyone know who the personnel are?

  • Tom Waits is very good But this is a Bad video

  • Thats what makes this one so good! :O

  • In the land of Tom Waits, Tom Waits is king!

  • the last one (in the neighborhood) is taken from Swordfishtrombones too

  • Everybody compies someone... even beefheart, he ripped off the growl of several delta blues singers and added a touch of the avant garde.

  • wait... I am a big Waits fan, but you have to admit he was kind of ripping Beefheart when he started using the "growl".

  • First Song sounds like Captain Beefheart.

  • excellent performance. I don't know how his voice is not destroyed!

  • actually the first song here, is the first song from swordfishtrombones

  • no man. the first song in swordfish called "Underground"

  • oh yeah, you're definitely right, shit. where is this one from? i have it...is it from mule variations then?

  • ah, it is from swordfishtrombones! but it's the 5th song.

  • His voice is amazing, sounds like it's practically exploding out of his throat.

  • idolo!!!!

  • wowie zowie how does he do that -the guys a magicisionmusician

  • First Song - 16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six off of Swordfishtrombones

Second song - Cemetery Polka off of Rain Dogs

third song - In the neighbourhood off of Swordfishtrombones

  • yea but it's all part of the three album opus that is "Rain Dogs"

  • No it's not.

  • yea those three albums were connected, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it loosely follows the story (not chronologically of course) of Frank, a sailor in the war or something like that

  • and so's the last one.

  • the first song is actually from swordfishtrombones, but it's still dope.
