  • Spending the early 90s in college at U NC, obviously they were a staple of college radio. I only wonder what happened to Johnny Quest after the accident. Two great bands.

  • I love thos band, this song and the album which showed how brilliant these talented guys are. Relating to the Connells..does anyone know what happened to the wonderful video someone made up for "Set The Stage"??? I loved that creative video showing this cute character plugged into the wall and longingly wanting and trying to get out of the window. The video is gone and wish it was still on You Tube.

  • Used to catch them in Myrtle Beach at the Purple Gator and Afterdeck back in the day. One of my all time favorite bands. Hope the boys are doing well.

  • One of the ultimate club bands. There was nothing like hearing them live at a venue where you could literally reach out and touch them. Fortunately for their fans, they never got too big so that they would be forced to play stadiums.............

  • I loved this group! Saw them at the boathouse in Virginia Beach in the 90s! I miss this kind of music!

  • if you liked connells, you should hunt down a copy of lifeboat, the s/t lp from north carolina's lifeboat. it's a great 1985 album. the connells were so good live. saw them in charleston, sc, back in '89.

  • I was at the Charlotte show too! They still put on a great show, makes you feel like a kid again! Got to hug Mike after the show, YAY me!

  • Saw The Connells in Charlotte last night. I still love their music and this is still the show closing song.

  • Wow - overcome with memories when I listen to these guys. They will always be the kings of college radio in my mind.

  • i have "one simple word' on vinyl Lp...:)

  • @DjJohnnyM68

Yeah, exactly twenty years ago, maybe to the month, I bought this one and had a few prior ones (Fun and Games). Saw them a couple of times! Great memories!! Go Indies!

  • YES! YES! YES! Much of The Connells catalog is now on MP3 - Amazon.com has them. Yes! Yes! Yes!

  • old skool :)

  • HaHa....Archers of LOAD....that's awesome...if I was them, I would switch between usage of LOAD, and LoaF...like maybe on the weekends, or for holidays, etc.

  • hahay...listening to music such as these makes me feel nostalgic....music in the early and mid 90's, really cool sounds...the band's front man appeared in the movie"Bandwagon"...^-^

  • Blame the music industry , If the return in accounts is small,it doesn't matter how great the talent, but hey thank goodness, for youtube to harness all the music we love and put it out there to enjoy and compare with todays unrelenting void of trite shite.Kids,we need a new music revolution,it's about time, bring on the Damned!

  • long live the album "One Simple Word"...20 years old maybe

  • @castertunes1967 : 20 years old maybe not to the exact date, but it was a 1990 release on TVT records. Let's hear it for southern indie bands from the 90s.

  • i loved 120 minutes

  • @forenergy : Ditto

  • this music is timeless but the video, not so much.

  • So glad I just discovered this awesome band. Isnt Archers of Loaf also out of North Carolina?

  • @jacktheripper300

Yes. Archers of Load, and Superchunk, and Polvo

  • those days at the boathouse in norfolk, va...never forget them

  • those days at the boathouse in norfolk, va...never forget them

  • Takes me back to CH.

  • The MTV logo just makes me smile, it brings me back to a time when I was young and my dad let me watch Beavis and Butthead and everything was right in my world, and MTV played good music like this.

Too bad they got fucking ass fast, and now real MTV is consigned to a sub-channel (MTV Two).

  • my god i miss this music

  • Ah-h- Walnut Creek..90's miss them!

  • @elleJify... Walnut Creek in NC!! The 90s! Yes! I was a teenager and that's where I lived then!!

  • If I remember correctly, they were the first band to play at Walnut Creek when it opened. Great show. I miss these guys.

  • @jillibeangirl Yeah, Wikipedia agrees.

  • @jillibeangirl

It looks as though they may end up being the first band to play the new downtown amphitheater too.

  • @ParadoxBaklash Really?!? I thought it was the backstreet boys who were opening the place. If The Connells are playing in Raleigh, I'm there!

  • @jillibeangirl

Backstreet Boys are the first "official" on June 6 there's a rumor going around that the Connells may do an unofficial soft opening on June 4. I have seen nothing official to confirm that though.

  • Great music is timeless. Great band !

  • miss you

  • I NEED a shirt like that!

  • Connells were one of my favorite groups. Original indie rock back when it still was.

  • Hear,hear!!!!

  • wow great Blast from the Past!

  • The memories come back in a huge way.

Thanks for posting this UNREAL Connells tune !

    Awesome !

  • the Connells are awesome... they should get new radio play.... put them on Coffee house . Their music is great!

  • this is an option for North Carolinas official rock song...

  • The Connells were one of the great bands in the 80's that were played on college radio. Now the music coming out is mostly c(rap). Every time I see the Jonas brothers I want to shoot my

    TV set.

  • you gt something against jonas brothers???? they are so good............. (sarcasm)

  • @dukeofsnatch hopefully the bullet will travel through the TV and get the bastards.

  • my cousin dated the lead singer Doug in high school. and, btw, go heels.

  • great song brings back memories of a great time in my life in North Carolina

  • "She was a bad dancer until she learned to shimmy." The very first time this pure pop gem came out of my speakers I... Had never heard anything like it, and haven't since. Long live TC.

  • Love it

  • awesome song

  • Does anyone know if there is a video on here for "Slacked Jaw"?

  • this song rules and mark pellington is an amazing director.

  • america, create more songs like that for this summer!

    wouldye? :P

  • This song reminds me of some great times in North Carolina.

  • If you dug this band....it was and always will be a place in time.

  • Great Band Who were just amazing live. So underrated.

  • I had the good fortune to have played both Jimmy and Betty in this video. I was a very young actor and it was some of the best fun I ever had in my career!! These guys were awesome to work with and the director on this is Marc Pellington, very accomplished now.

    Ilan Kwittken

  • I remember watching this video from taping 120 Minutes. As an impressionable 19 yr old kid watching this I definitely remember seeing you in this video. Your eyerolls are etched in my memory! Take care.

  • Yes, I saw you on 120 Minutes as well and thought you were fantastic! Great job!!

  • In my opinion their best song but heck all their songs kick butt

  • I echo that sentiment ..its their best

  • Oh man. . .this takes me back. I used to freaking LIVE in Boylan Heights. They were gr8 =)

  • What happened to these guys? , heard bandwagon was a movie about their lives

  • They're still around playing shows, and they just released a new album not too long ago.

  • They played a show at my high school in in 91 and two bands at the school opened. They were such cool guys. Our student pres at the time was a big fan of them and spent the remaining class surplus on it.

  • they definetly deserved more attetion world wide i think

  • That wasn't Baylor in Chattanooga was it?

  • My first Connells song. The first guitar slash got a tear in my eye. That's how good they were.

  • Music business should have a rule that allows you to spend only a 100 bucks on your music video to improve the quality of todays music.

  • Thanks for posting all of these wonderful clips!

  • They were big in the South. They were so normal. They didn't act like "rock stars'.They would have beer with fans before their shows. The Connells rock.

  • Great college band. Used to see them in Atlanta all the time. Cotton Club, Masquerade. Awesome memories!

  • I didn't hear of the Connells until 74-75 came out. You never really heard the Connells name here in Ireland or saw these videos on TV. I bought Ring at the time, and even now still listen to and love it.

These guys are so under-rated, what a band!

I'd love to get more albums from them though... may get scouting on the internet or somewhere to see if I can pick up all their albums

  • The best times ever! Just divorced and lost everything. I ended up going to ODU in Norfolk without a care in the world. Great band, awesome memories. Listened to 93.7 The Coast! Whatever happened to that radio station?

  • Total Memories of College, ninties for me, what has happened to the music scene!

  • Brings back memories. They rock! I was big into Sex Police (John Plymale and Norwood) Also Queen Saturday, and Dillon Fence. The good ole days. Mostly at the Mad Monk- Wilmington NC.

  • One of my faves in college. . .I first saw them opening for 10,000 Maniacs in '87 at The Cotton Club in Atlanta.

  • great band broughton 88 ncsu 88-92... saw them many times ....remember also johnny quest ... the sex police..they played our sober graduation party from high school project graduation .. monster parties on frat court..

  • Yeah the Sex Police were awesome! I saw them several times at clubs in Johnson City TN. Anyone remember Plain Jane Has a Date? I saw a great band in JC once called Shatter Proof. I can't find anything on them now but I remember they were great.

  • Cool. I saw them at a place called Quarterbacks (I think that was the place) in Johnson City Tn back when I was in college (early 90's). I still listen to this cd every once in a while.

  • I was at that show. This guy Jason was with his buddy Squirrel. They threw beer on the lead singer and they quit early. It really sucked!

  • Its all coming back to me now. I forgot about that. I still had a great time (I think).

  • That is what makes these guys special. That fact that they were not oversold or over exposed. Soulja Boy is a joke and will be forgotten in 15 years. The Connells made their impression which is why we are back here on Youtube listening to their great music.

  • These guys played one of our fraternity parties back in the day--they were totally laid back off stage but had talent to burn when the amps came on.

It kills me that utter s**t like "Crank Dat Soulja Boy" gets heavy play and these guys never blew up like they deserved.

Still see them from time to time down here in Raleigh, and they always bring back great memories.

  • Lighthouse in Elon 90' I was there!! I still follow there music and see them live today, but nothing compares to run they had in the late 80's and early 90's. Brings back great memories.

  • i first saw these guys at a really big frat party at georgia tech in the fall of 89 or 90, i can't remember, but they did play this song. damn that was a long time ago.

  • They were my favorite band in college at JMU in Virginia - and, I too, don't know how they didn't get huge. Love Connells!!!

  • I am a huge fan as well -- still have my "Fun and Games" cassette tape -- saw them play the gym at JMU with the Hoodoo Gurus! Then would road trip to see them play live!

  • Loved the Connells and Hoodoo Gurus - "Come Anytime!"

  • Both these bands were so underrated. I saw the connells open for Hoodoo Gurus at a concert in like 88' I think. They played in Greensboro, NC.

  • agreed just like Dillion Fence

  • I remember those guys. I've a cassette EP somewhere.

I met them through The Connells and Rob Stickly.

    Great band.

  • totally dillon fence! I saw them at Duke on my 21st bday. although Duke sucks.

  • c99999992003,

Wow, I would have loved to have seen that show...I saw the Connells a few times, but would have LOVED to see the Gurus.

  • Hoodoo Gurus blew the roof off. They were amazing. It was the magnum Cum Louder tour. They played like 3hrs. The last encore was Good Times. I'd kill to be able to re-live that concert again.

  • Wow! I can still taste the pre-grunge frosting. I remember listening to One Simple Word and getting high sometime in early '91 in Virginia. It's amazing that so many people outside the south never heard these guys!

  • Longing for the early 90's at the Lighthouse in Elon!

  • I've known "The Connells"(personally)since the mid 80's.

    I've never seen this video.

    Thanks!

  • I take it you are from their neck of the woods like me. Do you a remember a band named "Psycho Sonic Cindy" that use to make the rounds in the area in the early '90s?

  • I'm not aware of them. But, I'm willing to find out about them.

    I'm from Chattanooga, TN.

    They are from Raleigh, NC.

I met them when the album "Boylan Heights" was released and we became friends.

I lost personal touch with them in late 2001 (sending Christmas cards and phone calls and such...I was in the UK)

I still consider them great friends and hopefully, we'll cross paths again soon.

Thank you very much for being a fan.

  • ...Great song from an incredibly underrated band....

  • one of those great bands who decided not to sell out and kept their dignity and creativity in tact....definately in my top 20 all time bands

  • ...Yes, they are one of my favorites as well...miss seeing them live...:)

  • wow thanks...that really takes me back to before life went horribly wrong....

  • hahahahahaha!!!! it can't be all that bad now, but I know exactly what you mean. Geez! It's kinda like a time machine listening and seeing this stuff isn't it?

  • Yeah it is...speaking of time machines, The Reivers are doing a reunion show here in Austin Tx on Feb 9th and 10th at the Parish....been waiting a long time for this one!

  • Excellent song. Thanks for posting.
