Lived in Wellington from 1982 to 1984. I can remember seeing breakdance performances in D Block at Tawa College during lunch hour circa 1984. This video certainly brings back memories of that time.
And actually, I've noticed that our 80's era (I'm from the c/o '85) gets a whole lot of props from the young crowd on YouTube. It makes me sorta proud, ya know (and old!! lol).
But really though, I think our 80's were sorta "post-modern" in it's music and movies. I say that to mean that, for example, if a song like Planet Rock (1981) was unheard of until now, it could pass as a brand new release. It established a cultural trademark for the future.
I understand what you mean how the music and culture was ahead of its time.
I'm 25 years old, and I always loved 80s music... it was an awkward, catalysmic change for me when I was 8-9 (at '91 & 92) when Top 40 music was heading toward grunge, alternative and gangsta rap. Only with the internet am I rediscovering 80s songs I thought was my imagination since I was so young!
With electropop overtaking hip-hop in the Top 40 scene, it seems that the lighter/dance synthesizer sound is leading not only pop (Britney, Lady Gaga, Rihanna), but all genres of music...similar to the 80s.
(For example, in rock:
80s: Stevie Nicks "Stand Back", The Cars, Kenny Loggins "Footloose" & "Danger Zone".... & Glam Metal
late 00s: Katy Perry "Hot N' Cold", Metro Station, Kelly Clarkson "My Life Would Suck..."

"You see children, that's where today's hip-hop moves came from" LOL
As much as people think there too cool for the 80s, there's a lot of cultural trademarks of the 80s that are subtly still present today.

wxyzdetroit,
Cultural trademarks, indeed.
