My phone does this, too. However, it will only do this if i deliberately reenact what you did. I do not get the same issues the way i normally handle it. Usually i hold it as you do except my palm does not touch the phone the way i hold it. Also, when i am making calls i do not notice such a thing. I am using Verizon, who also provides service for iPhone and overall i am happy with my phone and it's good to watch out for technical issues. If this is the only issue with it, i have yet to see them

This even happened when I blocked the antenna on my old old Sharp G25. It doesn't have to necessarely to be a smartphone to have antenna issue. At least Apple was truthfull enough to go public about the issue, I didn't see any other brand with same antenna issue doing the same thing. It's normal to have so many attacks on iPhone when it has a problem, since even the haters are expecting for the iPhone to be perfect. But nothing is perfect.
@crizl2007 yeah, other manufacturer's didn't because it's not that significant. apple spoke about the problem, but what did they do? nothing. they only put the blame on others. Nokia N97 mini doesn't have an antenna issue, which apple claimed. They're only trying to be the best and then laugh at others. the sad thing here is that it will soon hit apple itself.

thats because you have at&t. They tested it and only 1.8% of verizon users get their calls dropped, and at&t 4.6% calls dropped. that being said that just means that at&t's network isnt as goo as verizons.

Just got one, have the very same problem, it is a design error that Apple eventully have to pay for through class action suits. They actually admit it to a point on the phone. Best solution for us owners is to put a case on it until they have to replace them after they FIX the new ones. That is going to cost them billions, but it is their fault for releasing the phone with this design error. Do not let them tell you it is not a problem like the rep tried to tell me today on phone with them!
I'll start by saying i'm currently using an iPhone 4 myself, and I do love it. On a serious note, I understand that some people see this as an issue and it's quite pathetic that apple would release such a product with a problem like this. (Note, i'm talking for the americans) This problem is extremely small where I live, Sweden. It's AT&T's shitty ass network. But ofcourse, the actual antenna is the same on all cellphones, so it's still there. Summary: Don't put your key like that when you call.

Why would you spend $299 on a phone and then toss it in your pocket with your keys to see how much you can scratch it up? Key is a stupid demo. I'm pretty sure a wire would do a great job too but like the key the iPhone wasn't designed to be used with a piece of metal across it. As for the hand, some people have the problem some don't. I can make it happen but I have to clamp my hand down to do it and I've never had the problem when I was actually using the phone.

I tried this, an I started with full signal, an it went down to 4 bars, an no lower. An in my hand it didn't move at all.
But I have a full case, maybe that has some effect.

Just got one, have the very same problem, it is a design error that Apple eventully have to pay for through class action suits. They actually admit it to a point on the phone. Best solution for us owners is to put a case on it until they have to replace them after they FIX the new ones. That is going to cost them billions, but it is their fault for releasing the phone with this design error. Do not let them tell you it is not a problem like the rep tried to tell me today on phone with them!

I'll start by saying i'm currently using an iPhone 4 myself, and I do love it. On a serious note, I understand that some people see this as an issue and it's quite pathetic that apple would release such a product with a problem like this. (Note, i'm talking for the americans) This problem is extremely small where I live, Sweden. It's AT&T's shitty ass network. But ofcourse, the actual antenna is the same on all cellphones, so it's still there. Summary: Don't put your key like that when you call.

DArlicz, you know nothing! IT is NOT the AT&T network, it is the iphone 4 design. My iphone 3g had no problem like this, just this new iphone 4.

And the antennas are NOT the same on all cellphones, the Apple tech admitted that the iphone 3g/gs had an internal antenna and the iphone 4 has external antenna, the parts that your hand touch....A DUMB DESIGN!

its really not that big of a deal, i covered both sides with my hands in a shop where they had an iphone 4 for just out of curiosity and the reception didnt decrease at all. and i think that even if the reception probem wouldn't have existed, more than half of the iphone users would have bought a bumper anyway, just so that its safe from scratches and other stuff. i'll definitely get an iphone 4 for in the next couple of weeks.

@sleepyteins a key completely grounds out the antenna causing the signal to drop to zero. he uses a key to exaggerate the effect. The human hand can vary from about 10 kilo-ohms to 10 mega-ohms and so the effect with be drastically different from person to person. If your hands are wet, or you use alot of moisturizer the effect will be much worse;

Why would you spend $299 on a phone and then toss it in your pocket with your keys to see how much you can scratch it up? Key is a stupid demo. I'm pretty sure a wire would do a great job too but like the key the iPhone wasn't designed to be used with a piece of metal across it. As for the hand, some people have the problem some don't. I can make it happen but I have to clamp my hand down to do it and I've never had the problem when I was actually using the phone.
