Thelguy, christoper is speaking the truth. Our generation doesn't know even 1% of life back then. We think its all technology and fun and games. Second you step out onto the field. You dont know what you have done and what you are doing. There are two quote's that i strongly live by:
2. In peace the sons bury their fathers, but in war the fathers bury their sons.
3.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
dude i can do Wat i want to and PS.your life is worthless so go fuck off! i want to relive iwo jima and experiance all of it to keep it on as i tell the story to friends and such,i want to be one of those men who are now worshiped as a great person as they fight for freedom for their country and so on...
I may be ugly and british but how am I jealous? Why would you want to put yourself in that situation? So you could watch thousands of men die around you? You don't realise the amount of shit these men went through during the battles and for the rest of their lives. You really need to think a little before you speak.

You just send like 3 of the same messages in a row...noob. Also, I get your patriotism, but believe me you would most likely be killed and if you weren't, you wouldn't be a tuff bad-ass Marine like those Americans Propaganda Film, you'd be on the beach shitting your pants. Just like anyone else would be. Also, the kid is from the U.K. who cares? go eat McDonald's you fucking bitch.
show me a war that did not have an economic/material undertone.Young americans are brainwashed to kill and maim fellow human beings just so their americans can have time to argue about men marrying men, drive 100,000dollar cars, fornicate with the next neighbors wife and call other races/tribes by derogatory apalates.why cant true valour reside in not going to war and learning to just get along without eyeing some other persons resources.Sad that the world has come to exist on mutual suspicion.
For a start then, go and listen to the 1961 speech by Benjamin Freedman and listen to the other interviews with Daryl Bradford Smith at iamthewitnessDOTcom. I can't explain it in 500 characters.
Indeed.I just cant imagine what those Marines felt as they approached that beach oncethe Japsopened up. One thing I do find interesting is about all the attention the flag raisers received.Though they did a great thing, its a shame that other werent recognized for their valor. Marines like Douglas Jacobson who killed over 75Japanese! Or Hershel Williams used aflamethrower to take out 7 pillboxes.A total of 27 medals of Honor were giver to Marines and Seamen at Iwo.Something to think about...
It's always easier to judge and pass criticism after the fact; especially generations away and from the comfort and safety of your homes; game controller in one hand; hot pocket in the other. Give me a damned break! Go volunteer for Afghanistan with one of the Marine Corps units there and then come back and talk your smack!
you are so right you cant talk unless you have actually expericened it i am a rifle man for the australian defence force i have not been to war yet but i am getting shipped of in about 3 months to serve for 6 months so all you idiots that knock war go play your video games cause u dont what you are on about i am goanna miss my family and pary i come back alive not dead
High Five, nickrules68!! And take care of yourself over there. I am going to subscribe to your channel; so if you get a chance to post something, I will follow your progress. Kick some ass, nick or as the U.S. Marines say, "Get Some!!"
You show your ignorance. This was in response to being attacked on December 7, 1941. Using your logic, anyone who were to punch you in the mouth would not experience your defense. why do you make such a post and prove your ignorance to the world?
Wow, this is just a great video. I recently read the book, Flags of Our Fathers, and this video helps me get a better view of what the Marines had gone through on Iwo Jima.
can someone answr this for me. wouldnt it be easier if the americans would just cut off supplies to the island so that people will all just starve to death. like 100% cut off of supplies, even if they have to wait for a year until everyone has starved to death, at leas tpeople wouldnt get killed. at least attack some other palces that arent so heavily defended.
i never thought i'd be able to see what it was really like. and actually, this 37 day campaign took more casualties than 5 months of fighting on Guadalcanal, in which the Navy Fled, leaving The Marines to die, but by December of 1941, the US Marines became the first ever conquorers of the Japanese Imperial Army. =D
Hats off to our greatest generation! They took more casualties in a few days than we have taken in more than 3 years in Iraq, but they kept fighting till they won!
I like how the narrator says "over 12,000 of thier men were killed during which they slaughtered 2,000 of our men"..look how the term slaughter appears to be used for the wrong side.
That's because the Japanese were more brutal. Some japs pulled a man name Ralph Igatowski into one of their caves and cut him in to pieces, and left him there. His best buddy, Corpsman John "Doc" Bradley found him hours later. When the time came to talk to "Iggy"'s family, Doc told them he had died quickly. Without pain.
Both sides were brutal. The difference in the pacific theater is that both Americans and Japanese believed each other to be barbarians, so torture and atrocity was common for both sides.
The reason for the use of the term "slaughter" isn't difficult to understand...Americans were prejudiced, plain and simple. A gallup poll taken after the war indicated that 13% of Americans believed the entire Japanese race should be exterminated. Makes history a little less pretty, but its the truth.
Yeah. They should have fought one of them really cool, romantic, picturesque, kind-hearted, decent, warm-fuzzy, lovey-dovey battles instead. Yanno, the same way every other war-time battle throughout the history of the world has been fought by people in countries other than the U.S.A. I'm sure all you people outside the U.S.A fight your wars with the utmost respect for your enemies and treat them with nothing but kindness and love, right?
I'm guessin' none of you idiots have ever been in combat of this nature. Niether have I, but my grandfather fought in this very battle, and I have an uncle that fought on Omaha beach, and they used to tell me stories.
When you're young like them(teenagers)and you're in intense combat like this, sometimes hand-to-hand, when the enemy won't give up, and is trying to shoot you, stab you, blow you up, strangle you, throw rocks at you, pummle you with sticks and pipes.....
.....and basically is trying to kill you any way they can, you're scared shitless to the point of pissing yourself and kill EVERYTHING in sight or that makes a noise until no one is trying to kill you anymore, and you can get the hell out of Dodge and go back to your home, wife, and kids.
There is no thinking involved when it comes to how much respect you should show the enemy, or how politically correct you should be. You don't have time for that shit.
The entire island was basically one giant bunker. The famous quote that the battle of Iwo Jima was like "throwing human flesh against reinforced concrete" is very appropriate. Of all the battle of WWII, I think this is one where I certainly would NOT have wanted to be there, on either side.
another one was that "the Marines were ON Iwo Jima, the Japanese were IN Iwo Jima" and "We gave our tomorrow, for your today". And i would give anything to have been there, and to have died with those brave young boys on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. God Bless The United States Marines. *Salute*
