As a kid i remember watching a sad music video to this song with a solider dying and when is says here’s to you my trusted friend he is talking of his dog I can’t find this video anywhere on the net dose anyone nowhere to find this ?
Reminds me of my childhood when I hear this song. Two of my friends were riding their bikes when a drunk driver killed them both. That was back in the Summer of 1975 when we were all 11 years old. They were brothers.
I miss you John. Your alchol wverdose was a long time ago. You were only 21 years old and had your whol life in front of youl I wonder what you would be like today. You were a great wonderful brother. I will see you some day.
I agree. I feel this is one of the best songs about summer although it only mentions spring. The words and melody are great. Sadly, this song is forgotten today . Whatever happened to Terry Jacks? So many great artists had 1 hit and then were never heard from again. Poignant and meaningful lyrics unlike most of the junk written today. Thanks for posting.
Terry Jacks offered this song to the Beach Boys to record. Mike Love in his wisdom decided it was too much of a bummer song for the BB's. Terry did it himself and it was a #1 hit.
@Raider577 Terry was producing it for the Beach Boys but Mike Love was acting like an A hole & Brian was outta his mind...Terry just did it himself. The Beach Boys demo version is on youtube. Check it out.
@harwicke Well either someone is lying(beach boys or Terry Jacks) or got their facts wrong. Because I saw a documentary here in the UK about a Belgian poet/singer songwriter called Jacques Brel (spelling might be incorrect) Acoording to this programme he wrote or at least wrote the lyrics or melody and Terry Jacks covered it. His version I think is on You Tube.
@Raider577 Yeah, I think it was an old song in a different language, and Jacks up dated it. He changed it, and tried to get the Beach Boys to record it.
@harwicke I have just checked Wikipedia(though they are not 100% reliable) They say Jacques Brel melody
was used but an English translation from the French was done by an American lyric writer. Apparently it had been covered before in English before Terry Jacks even recorded it. Though his is the most successful and known version.
this song means alot tome. when i was 9 i met my best friend jen. when she was 10 she waskilled and the next day a few of her friends and i listend to this song. it makes me think of her.
