Although I agree with A.E's response, I do not agree with how they formulated the response. From this rabbi's point of view, their answer must indeed seem angry.
After all the dust settles, we have only two choices. Either the universe brought itself into existence, or something outside the universe, an external cause brought it into existence. The problem is how something could brought itself into existence? Isn't possible, therefore the cause must be external. The only thing present was energy. The God of the Bible is described with the same attributes of energy before energy was described. The existence of God is the best explanation. Open your eyes
I am an atheist. I actually agree with the statement that 'atheists always seem angry'. I do however, feel this is easily explained and furthermore is understandable. First, atheists are only identified as atheists when they are debating/discussing religion/god. It is at this time that they 'always' seem angry. Why? 1. as an atheist, it is infuriating to be looked down upon and considered foolish when it is so obviously the atheist argument that is the logical one.
2. it is infuriating to watch as people's basic rights are taken away because the majority of our society still lives by the arcane moral standards outlined in the bible and they see fit to impose those morals onto the rest of society.
3. it is infuriating to watch people die for and kill over whose imaginary friend is the most real
4. it is infuriating to see scientific progress stopped because it threatens the church.
I think atheists might seem angry in America where they are having to fight as a discriminated against minority.
In countries where atheists are not in a minority (I live in one) then they don't seem so angry and we don't talk about religion merely so much... No need to.
@blahblahreadabook Aww, I'm sorry you're so ANGRY at GOD that you feel the need to be so PROUD as to not repent of your SIN. Did you know the FOOL hath said in his heart, there is no God? That's right, the Holy Bible has called you a fool! That means that basically, God says you're just stupid.
@NoAtheists Im not angry at god, god doen't exist and you cant be mad at something that's imaginary, I'll leave that kinda insanity to you and your buddies who worship imaginary sky wizards. Who cares what the bible says, it was written by desert dwelling sheep herders and fisherman, I am confident that my intellect surpasses theirs, even yours would! I find it odd you say that god thinks im stupid, if he created me in his image that means he's stupid to are u allowed to think that?
How could some of the scientists permit themselves to make a claim that would necessitate knowledge as extensive as the scheme of the universe, when their knowledge of the total scheme of being is *close* to zero, when confronted with a whole mass of unknowns concerning this very earth and tangible, lifeless matter, let alone the whole universe?
@NoAtheists Aww, I am sorry you are so angry at the fact that you don't get to live forever that you have to deny the obvious even though you know deep down this is the only life we've got. Confess to willful rejection of obvious reality and dump the self-righteous pride. The writers of the Bible were a mixture of good poets, philosophers, violent power freaks, and superstitious goat-herders from the Late Bronze Age.
@blahblahreadabook Atheists are always angry because they are full of self-denial. They deny their own soul. Atheists think they have no free-will and are just meaningless machine with no emotions or ability to be conscious or experience life.
Just like feminists are always angry. And republicans always angry.
@realoldguy1969 Nope. Its a load of rubbish. So what? Just because one bunch of people get spirituality totally wrong, doesn't mean we must all be meaningless machines with no soul. What if there are different spiritual beleifs that DO make sense? One that is in tune with empirical science and embraces evolution and the rest of stuff...
@noobenstein spirituality, faith, dragons, unicorns, souls, an afterlife, giants, fairies, elves, ogres, goblins, and ghosts are only real in your mind. Outside of the thoughts in your head, it doesn't exist. It is just wishful thinking and fantasy. Your "what if" is a fantasy thought.
@noobenstein You sat through a whole video(I'm assuming you've seen the vid you're commenting on) explaining that those who think atheists are mad don't understand atheists, yet you still aren't willing to get to know an atheist or two before you claim the exact same statement?
Well I'm an atheist, and I'd be happy to sit down and have a mature chat with you about this, explaining atheism and rational thought to you. That is, if you're willing to have an open mind about it. :).
@noobenstein You sat through a whole video(I'm assuming you've seen the vid you're commenting on) explaining that those who think atheists are mad don't understand atheists, yet you still aren't willing to get to know an atheist or two before you claim the exact same statement?

I am trying to understand why most clergy (rabbis, ministers, preists...) are pompous controlling jerks. Perhaps it is because they were misled in their youth, they had bad experiences with reality and were looking for ways out of reality, or perhaps they are just a more dull-witted ape that the rest of us.
There. How does that feel Rabbi? Better? Do you understand atheism better?
I'm an atheist and I have seen an insensitive eulogy. My brother's. My brother was NOT religious at all and my parents told the eulogist that, but she continued to go up there and spout religious bullshit. I was already Atheist and that just made me hate religion even more.
I am angry because religion is responsible for oppression and the deaths of millions. In science alone, if religion had not fought pretty much every advancement for centuries perhaps no one would be suffering from cancer or old age anymore. When I see a person suffering with a potentially preventable disease I get angry . Science actually has the potential to give everlasting life in a paradise of your own choosing free from death with god like powers- no wonder religion sees it as an opponent
"When I was a kid, I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised, the Lord doesn't work that way. So I just stole one and asked Him to forgive me."
I'm a practicing Jew and I think that these fundamentalist, especially Christians; are the problem, not atheist. I think atheist are up set with pathetic Jahovahs Witnesses coming to there door telling them to convert or burn in hell. That would aggravate anyone.
Fundamentalist Christians are just a result of uneducated people.
I am atheist, however I feel that these commentators are the very reason that atheists are vewed as ass holes, they take a very well reasoned and calmly written letter and mock it like condescending duche bags simply because the author believed in god. I think that most atheists are not like that however, most theists only notice those dicks that go out of their way to belittle religion. I wish they would stop, it gives all atheists a bad name.
@joecivit1 Did you listen to the video? First, it wasn't a letter, it was an article on the Newsweek website. Second, it may have been calmly written but was not well reasoned. Third, they didn't mock the author because of his religion but because of his arrogant, patronizing, self serving explanation for athiests lack of belief.
If you are an atheist you must have had someone ask you at some point why you became one? Also, religion belittles itself.
@joecivit1 No, the letter was hypocritical and patronizing as Russell pointed out, and this is what they mocked, not the fact that the writer believed in god. You would be angry too if someone made stupid assumptions out of their ass about what you think, say or do, say stupid things in your name, and state it as fact. If I told you I have an invisible leprechaun giving me wisdom and guidance, you'd probably not believe it. Now what if I told you you are just angry against my leprechaun?
@henf5671 If you want to practice your religion in a country that espouses religious freedom, perhaps you should leave the insults at home. One religion attacking will only lead to the banning of ALL religions.
Logically speaking, if every religion uses the same argument to prove they are right, it means they are either all right, or all wrong.
I believe there is a higher form of life out there. I don't, however, think you should get down on your knees for it. You aren't a servant or slave.
@henf5671 "Religion does not cause evil. you're an idiot."
Religion is the leading cause of death of the human race. From day 1 it has crippled humanity and progress. anything about science is from the devil. anyone who don't follow your view is the devil or with the devil and must die.
@jesse8258 wrong. i don't view science as the work of the devil. i view evil acts as the work of the devil and yes that includes religious blind faith actions such as 911. Religion if properly followed is not a bad thing. It is a form of meditation which you atheist fucktards fail to understand.
@henf5671 Science actually has the potential to , in the next few hundred years , to provide you with everlasting life in a paradise of your choosing , with god like powers and populated with the people and creatures of your own choosing , not someone else's. Read Ray Kurzwiel, he is perhaps too optimistic but the direction is clear. Religion fights this progress to a real attainable heaven at every step. Religion is a bad thing for this reason. Would not God want to see you in a real heaven?
There are a heck of a lot of atheists who, when debating christians, will use foul and abusive language to demean the christian, this, in my opinion will only back them into a corner and reinforce thier beliefs. I've found you can have a more productive debate if you use common sense and reason. .. they still wont listen, but you feel you've won the debate when they eventually stop responding.
This matafuckers just want views and attention that's all because one day in there life there where Christians and back slided because I know that fat basterd that's next to that bald bitch he said he was Christian before he's hypocrite!
@THEMAKDON What? They were christians and then realized they believed for poor reasons and that makes them hypocrites? How? Try a little less pointless insults and a little more point.
@THEMAKDON I loved your private comment. The complete message was "ignorant apes". I know it's just a meaningless insult, but I have no idea who you are insulting or why. Classic.
"angry atheist?" while i don't doubt there are some angry atheists, the way there are some angry christians, i honestly think atheists -- who aren't under any official organization or w/e.. are much more tolerant than very devout christians who think everyone is wrong except for them. even "celebrity" atheists and skeptics seem way more nicer and open minded than celebrity christians who come off as obnoxious and condescending.
Or perhaps their atheism is a rejection of the illogical, irrational, superstitious, stupid, and ignorant claims of religion that has been a societal poison for far too long.
If you ssomehow didn't show a child a religion until they were about 16/17, yeah, almost everyone would be Atheists. Notice how the 'innocent' religious people don't do anything for their religion. But the 'bad' Christians are the ones who enforce it. Wow. Reading a number of these Christian comments convinced me even more that all religions are wrong.
@pat5168 So you''re saying people who were brought up with no religion end up as atheists when they grow up? Idk if you're being sarcastic or not, but that's untrue, bro.
NEWS FLASH. People who drop religion or stray from religion tend to be agnostic or deist. You anti-god people have always been the minority of minorities and always will. You're too stubborn for your own good.
@MrPastrychef100 I'm not against most religious people, like I said, most people live life with religion barely involved, and I'm cool with that, some of the chillest people I know are Buddhists. My motto for life is that anyone should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't conflict the right for others to do the same.
@MrPastrychef100 And if what you said was true, that people who never get any contact with people who believe before them would believe the same thing? If that's true, how come we never stumbled across natives from a land who believed the same? Discover a native village in the Amazon who don't believe in a god having to do with their region if they do at all but believe in Christianity, and then I'll believe that people are "touched" and not told about it.
@MrPastrychef100 One last thing since you built up a straw man for myself. I'm not anti-god, I'm non-god, big difference. And if I seem to you to be anti-god than you're mistaken. And I think it's funny that you made that remark about how people who drop religion tend to be agnostic or deist, because I stopped believing a while ago and I can tell you right here and right now, your god does not have any viability to its existence. Maybe there is A god, but certainly not one made to date so far.
@pat5168 enforce it? their are both dush bag Christians and dush bag atheists, have you seen some of these atheist videos on here alone.. i know people who grew up with no religion but decided to believe later in life. Religion is wrong???? how so, to believe in say Christianity you believe in an afterlife and that if you are good in your life you will go to haven. long story short the msg is be good in life, live your life to the fullest, help others in need. please explain how that is wrong
@Baseshocks Religions are false, is more summing up of what I was trying to say. Contrary to your claim, I do agree with most of the morality teachings are that Christians often spread. But those are not founded on the bible, the morally active Christian picks and chooses what seems right to them. That in itself is showing morality does not need faith since they are discarding many of the things they do not agree with. The ones who take it completely literally (Eg. WBC) yes, are wrong.
@pat5168 being a Christian does not mean i have to follow every letter by the bible out of fear.... it means i believe in god. I do realize that there are extreme Christians in the U.S who say otherwise, please ignore them. The Bible is old translated in English written for people to understand ages ago, their are many translations of it. You cant expect everything in it to be right on the dot..
@Baseshocks Yes I acknowledged and made quite clear that I support non extremist Christians (Or non extremists in any religion for that matter.) like yourself. So do not mistake that I address every Christian in that comment. But my position still stands, for I said "'bad' Christians are the ones who enforce it." The extremists are the ones enforcing it, I cannot and will not simply ignore them when they wish to get their pseudoscientific views in science classes.
@Baseshocks said "You cant expect everything in it (the Bible) to be right on the dot..
If it were true, you could expect that it wouldn't contain nonsensical superstitions like killing witches. It was obviously written by superstitious people who didn't understand the world around them.
The evidence that we evolved from simpler life forms is overwhelming. Google Project Steve to see that the vast majority of scientists know that we were not created as humans. Genesis is just plain wrong..
@ndrthrdr1 ya..... the bible was written long time ago, do you expect the people of that time to understand and think the way we do now. it was written for the people of that time to understand., exactly its not all right on the dot i just said why, creation and evolution can be one in the same if you look at it differently. So how do you know witches were not real during at time long ago. their is no proof of... well actually ya, do some research in the wiccan religion.
"So how do you know witches were not real during at time long ago"
Because nothing supernatural, especially witchcraft, has been verified. Psychics are frauds, Ouija boards are a trick, alchemy is worthless, and magic doesn't happen. The only evidence of these things are stories about them, and we all know how trustworthy anecdotal evidence is, right?
If you really think you need to prepare your mind for research on Wicca, you are living in a fantasy. Wake up.
@coreygames i told you to do some research on it, not bluntly deny it after reading up on it on Wikipedia... open you mind and explore it then you will understand. if not then.... i guess just continue being ignorant.
Usually I'm fairly good at coming up with witty or thoughtful responses to comments despite the nature of people to post incomprehensible stupidity, rage-tastic insults, or a clever distraction, but you've got me stumped. What research am I suppose to gather on Wicca that I've put a closed mind to and not fully understood? What part of any superstitious reasoning am I suppose to look further into that I haven't already?
Enlighten me, because I'm genuinely confused right now :/
@pat5168 "If you ssomehow didn't show a child a religion until they were about 16/17, yeah, almost everyone would be Atheists." wrong. he just wouldn't be religious. the kid would still see gods everywhere, human brain does that all the time. it's an evolutionary adaptation that improved survivability in times when what you didn't know could easily kill you. the kid wouldn't know about jesus, but he would probably believe in an inteligent agency hiding in the unknown.
@omgopet You could bring a kid up to believe and see the intelligent agency of Cthulu if you constantly insisted and indoctrinated them, maybe that "improved survivability" was a benefit for early human societies when we didn't have the technology for measuring and indicating the cause of most natural phenomena, but in modern day science there is little room for the god of the gaps anymore. That is an argument from ignorance.
@pat5168 chtulu is a part of a religion of a sort. my point is that while you have to indoctrinate a kid with a particular theology, people in general are predisposed to asigning agency to the unknown.
of course it is completely unnecessary and even harmful today, we have gone a long way from roaming the savanna. i'm not arguing it's good, i was just correcting your statement which is false as demonstrated by sociological and neurological research.
@omgopet That's disturbing, but I think it isn't that way anymore. I stopped being a Christian at 13 and most of the kids from my middle and highschool were too despite all of us being brought up as Christians.
@pat5168 i was always an atheist with regards to the bible because i was never indoctrinated. but i was still afraid of unknown as a kid and wold personify my fear. it can be a monster in the closet or kid stealing gypsies that live around the block, but everyone has these kinds of associations as a kad. i bet you had them too.
the church gives those fears a name and a community instead of teaching kids to grow out of them. that's why you have grown, smart people believing ridiculous things.
@omgopet Regarding personifying fears actually never frightened me. I even went to a salvation army camp one summer and did a bloody Mary thing in front of the bathroom mirror because I wasn't afraid even though the councilors were dead serious about me seeing a bloody reflection of Mary in the mirror. That's why I'm not afraid of hell or any other immature concept of punishments religious people can think up of. It's just wrong that indoctrination will abuse that in a kid though and prolong it.
Why cant us Christians and you atheists just go our separate ways and quit arguing about whats true are not......let Christians be Christians and let atheists be atheists. Maybe everyone will be more happy. I don't hate atheists and i don't dislike them as people, but i do dislike their beliefs, just as they dislike my beliefs. And i'm okay with that. We Christians are not the ones to force God upon people, were just the ones to share God's word..... more of us Christians need to realize that.
@AllNightLong3333 If all christians were like that , maybe we could. But christians are trying to teach my children bronze aged religion in science class. They vote based on their beliefs, making others adhere to their book driven morality. If I don't swear on a bible in court I immediately have a bias against me. Some things are trivial, but some are much more. If we all can agree to keep government secular, we can all "go our own way".
I agree with the rabbi on his first statement about Atheists being angry, most Atheists I come across yell at me and tell me how idiotic my choices are. I spend a lot of time thinking about scientific theories and about God's very vague messages to us trying to understand, and I choose to beileve in God. Someone told me it was a hideous and disgusting practice. I never have found a kind Atheist.
@Zerachial thats funny, Christians like to tell me that i am going to Hell, the part that pisses me off the most. is they say it with a smarky smile on his/her face.
@OglethorpeofPluto I don't tell people that. I'm more agnostic than I am Christian. I consider myself a Christian but i have a hard time knowing what to believe.
@Zerachial "most Atheists I come across yell at me and tell me how idiotic my choices are."
You must have been evangelizing at them because otherwise they wouldn't know about your choices. Stop playing the victim when you've provoked people to anger.
I'm glad that After 35 years of being a Christian I finally started seeking the truth, because if I still believed after reading more of the bible then most Christians I would no longer be willing to Worship the god of the bible and so would live out my life knowing I was going to burn forever at the hands of an Evil tormentor who gets pleasure out of torturing others, And I am talking about God not Satan, heck if it were all true then who could blame Satan for rebelling. in Bible God is evil
@robtay1963 what true you are seeking and the after 35 years of you are being a Christian you realize demon belief of the atheist and you are one of them I'm feel sorry to you because you are in satan words
@Hiro9390 I am in a world created by the fusion of matter and the evolution and natural selection, I believe in modern science and peer tested knowledge, it is people who believe in invisible God I feel sorry for. But before I learned the truth, I quit being christian because if you really read the bible you see that god is far more evil then Satan, thou neither REALLY exist. Lets say bible was all true, power does not make one worthy of worship, but how one welds that power and god was cruel.
@Hiro9390 I don't personally study science, I have read several books on evolution from different authors and also on Cosmology( study of the starts). The books were written by people with money and technology to to test and retest each others information, and I just found it all way more credible then a book with so many stories that have no basis in real history. I have also read real books on Egyptology. But just reading the bible is enough to turn a Christian into an atheist.
@Hiro9390 Try reading the bible, I mean Samuel and joshua and the story of job, read them as a person who cares about children and kind people and don't only read the parts your pastor tells you to read, if after that you still want to worship him then you are very sick. If you read comments by atheists on here you will see that most know the bible better then most christians on here.....that is why we became atheist and found truth in science, it makes way more sense then 2000 year old book.
Maybe religion has helped human kind in some way, just like guns, but there comes a time when humans must realize we are advanced enough to put down the religion and the guns. Own up to the mistakes of humanity and ask questions on how to make it better.
Least that guy was a Sox fan. We're not angry, we are frustrated. We see so much illogic, and ill will and hatred all spawned from silly and illogical beliefs
I think atheist can't stand people being happy. despite all the yelling and frothing of the month, people still belive in their faith and are happy with their lives. Yes you have the fringe religious people but if an atheist thinks that represents the majority it just shows how blinded by hatred they are. Also assuming atheist are right that when we die it's oblivion..I ask..whats the point then...
@ubermisogynist Wow. You have made many claims about atheists that aren’t supported. Also, you misunderstand what atheism is. It is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the belief in an afterlife.
@Periph1989 The reason why ANYTHING is valuable is because it DOES NOT last forever. If the afterlife goes on forever, what is the point of this life since this life only lasts about 70 to 80 years? If this life is the only chance I’ll be able to have experiences, then it becomes MORE precious to me. Probably more precious than someone who believes they will live more than this life.
by definition atheists are angry because since they have seen the truth anyone would try to show it to others and they just can't see it. i have a good fucking reason to be mad BECAUSE I'M SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS!
@paenitet7nullum Thats maybe so, but pissing people off won't convince them to see your pov and in some cases it could be hazardous to one's health..im agnostic and I don't care what other people want to personally belive..this country was founded on religious freedom then either deal with it or get the fuck out.
@ubermisogynist If it pisses you off that atheists expresses their thoughts, then I apologize, but we have a right to do so. I find it funny when you typed “it could be hazardous to one’s health” because that is one of the biggest problems with religion: the mere instance of someone who speaks against it may cause trouble for him/her.
@Periph1989 Freedom of religion also includes freedom to reject it. This country was also founded on freedom of speech… so you can deal with that or “get the fuck out”.
Btw, agnosticism/ agnosticism deal with knowledge, and atheism/theism deal with belief. The terms aren’t mutually exclusive.
@paenitet7nullum the only way you atheist can get what you want is through genocide and totalitarianism..in that respect you guys wouldn't be any better than the religious people you hate.
@paenitet7nullum watch Adam Curtis's "All Watched by Machines of Loving Grace" it's about cybernetics but the overall theme is you can't control and tell people what to think and feel. This is what Atheist can't grasp. They need to just "deal with it".
@ubermisogynist No one is telling you what to think or feel. Stop clicking on atheist videos if you don't want to hear the godless perspective. This is what you can't grasp and you need to just deal with. That's like if you ordered a grilled cheese sandwich just to bitch about how the person making your food doesn't know what you want. Do you see your own logical fallacy of you even being on this video? Are you that stupid. Yes you are.
@paenitet7nullum i feel strange because I don't even care for relgion, but I defend it because my family, friends, coworkers are and I hate that atheist lump extremist with everyone else. I don't support womens rights, gay rights and I hate capitalism and like i said im not religions..
@ubermisogynist thats ignorant jabber.. all most atheists want is to keep religion out of the govt, allow people to believe what they want "religion or not" as long as they keep it in their homes, stop allowing cults to indoctrinate children, and stop allowing religious followers to force their beleifs on others..i.e. stem cell, abortion, gays, athiests, cloning, etc. i dont care if you want to beleive in fairytales, just keep that crap away from me, and out of my govt.
@flyinv1967 If you knew how to spell or the definition of the word moron, you would realize you are the moron. An offensive mentally challenged person, which perfectly describesyou and your annoying barely legible comments.
@flyinv1967 wow did you think the moon landing was not amazing? Do you not think that climbing mount everest for the first time was bot an outstanding desplay of human inginuity the fact that you are so full of lazyness and idiocy in equel amounts makes me physically sick
sayd robtay 1963 if not for religouse people we could be travelig to other planets by now.and who in hail would want to travel to another planet?oh yea lets sit here on the dirt with no trees for shade yea a fun place.nobody would want to go.no trees for houses and how could a space ship carry a cement truck?
I have often wondered what the world would be like today if no one had ever believed in God, I think without the dark ages where true science and any thing that made the holy books of the day seem false was punishable by the death we would be exploring other planets by now. Imagine if people had been allowed to study real science without fear 1000 years ago. I mean look how far science has come in just 235 years of freedom.....
@robtay1963 You have a greatly exagerated view of America's place in the world. And you're completely deluded if you think we are free. There is a far greater percentage of our population in prison than any other country in the history of the world. And with right wing scum trying to privatize it its going to get a lot worse. As for the spread of knowledge I advise you to look up "printing press" on wikipedia. You find the answer there.
@MasterOfSparks LOL true true, today all you say is true, I believe in freedom and laws against harming and stealing from others. I am not really speaking of today but of 236 years ago when this country was founded by men like Thomas Jefferson who warned Congress to be careful not to pass to many Laws based on individual beliefs or we will be come no better then the tyranny from which we have so recently escaped......Sadly if the right wing had there way true science will once again be Heresy.
@robtay1963 Actually, the church was the one that encouraged the scientific method, until it contradicted its beliefs. If the church never existed, there may not necessarily be an higher increase in scientific progress.
@robtay1963 Your hatred for religion is weird..you do know alot of science started because they were trying to figure out God..Newton was religions..Islam had a lot of scientific discoveries... but to answer your question I don't think it would have mattered..your problem is that you don't ackonlowed that PEOPLE are evil..if it's not religion to as you say "hold back" it's someone who want power and control over others..you know it was Atheist that invented the nuclear bomb,,,just sayin,,,
@ubermisogynist Actually, science started because they were trying to figure out reality... religion started because they tried to explain what they didn't know about reality with a primitive concept. As our understanding of science grew, some religions changed so that their beliefs became more and more obscure, or they died out.
@Periph1989 It doesn't matter what the religious beliefs of famous scientists were because the important discoveries that they made have no ties with their religious beliefs. What scientific discoveries were made because of Islam?
@ubermisogynist I don’t understand how “Atheists inventing the nuclear bomb” is relevant. If it is true (I don’t know if it is or not), their invention has nothing to do with their atheism.
What I don’t understand is that if the attributes that believers believe about God are true, that means he made us with the knowledge that we are “evil” and that some of us were destined for hell. If he is all knowing and all powerful, how can he NOT be all responsible?
@ubermisogynist I don't hate religion, I hate a belief structure that in the past has caused governments to go to war and kill and slaughter in the name of any God. Or to torture innocent people into clamming they believe something on pain of death. No ones arguments matter. I no longer believe in any God, but if you could prove to me beyond a doubt that the God of the KJV was real I would not worship him because he is a petty, egotistical, maniac who forces worship with death threats.
@robtay1963 fact is people will always have different views, i don't think all atheist are evil because they inventive the most destructive weapon man has known. I think atheist and religions people both need to learn tolerance. The only way atheist can get what they want is to do what religious people used(and sometimes now) is to do genocide and install a totalitarian form of government..supress freedoms etc..then Atheist would be no better than the people they hate
@robtay1963 Nice one John Lennon. lol This is true though 1000% Everyone could work for a common goal but whatever, it's better if you get those ideas out of your head now, because shit is going to get wayyyy worse before these ignorant fucks wake up and realize they were the ones moving their own bodies all along.
@Revolution2pointO What ticks me off is the fact that Christians push there agenda by saying how 80 percent of the population is christian, but that statement is bogus for two reasons first Atheist are treated with more contempt then Homosexuals so many won't admit even in a private survey that they don't believe, and Second because 700 years and more ago people were being tortured into believing and for fear of death taught their children who taught there children and so on:: Continued.....
@robtay1963 Continued::::: Which means that if centuries ago only a handful of the population believed and government forced it upon everyone then that would increase the number which would grow generation after generation. Christians want to remain blind to the holy wars, converting whole countries by force or the Inquisitions but without those events I bet the 80/20 would be flipped to 20/80....Sad to believe in a loving god who repeatedly kills innocents and forces belief with fear of fire.
@OtonielRochaSC - Why is the atheist against something that does not exist? Because the theists are trying to legislate morality and enact laws in a country that's supposed to be a secular democracy, based on the holy book of a bigoted, frightened, ignorant mob of desert dwellers. That's why. If the religious would STOP trying to teach nonsense about nonexistent deities in public school science classes, and STOP trying to legislate what people do with their own bodies, you wouldn't hear a peep.
This letter seems perfectly reasonable to me. His observation about atheists often having had a bad encounter with organised religion is true in many cases that I have observed.
Could one of you Jesus nuts please explain something? Is it your claim that the creator is a sociopath who created billions of people to torture for all eternity for simply not believing something that really makes no sense? Or do you claim that he is INCAPABLE of saving people who don't believe some nonsense because your god is not as powerful as Satan? Which is it? Is your god completely psychotic or just incompetent?
@MasterOfSparks God is like an indecisive child my son, trying desperately to decide whether to burn the ants in the ant mound with his magnifying glass or draw a pretty picture of them in crayon.
In the end he cannot make up his mind and so he drops trou' and pisses all over the ant mound (this is what causes rising sea levels btw) thus satisfying himself. Here's a bible quote which sums it up;
@lancecryor No sorry lance. You being an idiot then calling me one ain't gonna cut it. Either answer the question (which you obviously can't) or stfu (which apparently you can't do either). But calling me an idiot without being able to answer the question only makes YOU look stupid. Did I say "look"? Identifies you as stupid is more precise.
@MasterOfSparks lol asking a dumb question like "Is God psychopath or incompetent?" and then expecting an intelligent answer makes you sound dumber than you are and also proves that you just want to argue. Grow up. You're lucky you got an answer at all with that dumb garbage. Nothing you say can be taken seriously, and so YOU can't be taken serious. For dumb questions you get dumb answers.
@lancecryor Its a very sensible question. The Christian version of god is the worst demon in all of literature. He wipes out entire civilizations on a whim, tells parents to murder their children, and wants everyone who refuses to believe some idiocy to burn in eternal flames. He's vile, disgusting, and stupid. That's one option. The alertnative is that he doesn't have a choice in his behavior because he's being controlled himself. Which is it? Why do you worship a demon?
Wow. You guys look reallly angry. lol

Many pious peeps believe only in the stereotyped atheist.
If they aren’t using reason and rationality, why would they expect anyone else to?
Religions survive on ignorance; it is the fodder of the clergy and without it, religion dies.

Part 1 of 2
I am an atheist.

@blahblahreadabook
Part 2 of 2
2. it is infuriating to watch as people's basic rights are taken away because the majority of our society still lives by the arcane moral standards outlined in the bible and they see fit to impose those morals onto the rest of society.
3. it is infuriating to watch people die for and kill over whose imaginary friend is the most real
4. it is infuriating to see scientific progress stopped because it threatens the church.
this is why atheists always seem angry!

@blahblahreadabook
I think atheists might seem angry in America where they are having to fight as a discriminated against minority.
In countries where atheists are not in a minority (I live in one) then they don't seem so angry and we don't talk about religion merely so much... No need to.

@blahblahreadabook The atheist Delusion!

I wish they would stop, it gives all atheists a bad name.
joecivit1 5 months ago
@joecivit1 Did you listen to the video? First, it wasn't a letter, it was an article on the Newsweek website. Second, it may have been calmly written but was not well reasoned. Third, they didn't mock the author because of his religion but because of his arrogant, patronizing, self serving explanation for athiests lack of belief.
If you are an atheist you must have had someone ask you at some point why you became one? Also, religion belittles itself.
Mark3164 4 months ago
@joecivit1 No, the letter was hypocritical and patronizing as Russell pointed out, and this is what they mocked, not the fact that the writer believed in god. You would be angry too if someone made stupid assumptions out of their ass about what you think, say or do, say stupid things in your name, and state it as fact.
MrPastrychef100 5 months ago
@MrPastrychef100 I'm not against most religious people, like I said, most people live life with religion barely involved, and I'm cool with that, some of the chillest people I know are Buddhists. My motto for life is that anyone should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't conflict the right for others to do the same.
pat5168 5 months ago
@MrPastrychef100 And if what you said was true, that people who never get any contact with people who believe before them would believe the same thing? If that's true, how come we never stumbled across natives from a land who believed the same? Discover a native village in the Amazon who don't believe in a god having to do with their region if they do at all but believe in Christianity, and then I'll believe that people are "touched" and not told about it.
pat5168 5 months ago
@MrPastrychef100 One last thing since you built up a straw man for myself. I'm not anti-god, I'm non-god, big difference. And if I seem to you to be anti-god than you're mistaken. And I think it's funny that you made that remark about how people who drop religion tend to be agnostic or deist, because I stopped believing a while ago and I can tell you right here and right now, your god does not have any viability to its existence. Maybe there is A god, but certainly not one made to date so far.

Baseshocks 4 months ago
@Baseshocks Religions are false, is more summing up of what I was trying to say. Contrary to your claim, I do agree with most of the morality teachings are that Christians often spread. But those are not founded on the bible, the morally active Christian picks and chooses what seems right to them. That in itself is showing morality does not need faith since they are discarding many of the things they do not agree with. The ones who take it completely literally (Eg. WBC) yes, are wrong.
pat5168 4 months ago
@pat5168 being a Christian does not mean i have to follow every letter by the bible out of fear.... it means i believe in god. I do realize that there are extreme Christians in the U.S who say otherwise, please ignore them.

Wake up.

@pat5168 "If you ssomehow didn't show a child a religion until they were about 16/17, yeah, almost everyone would be Atheists." wrong. he just wouldn't be religious. the kid would still see gods everywhere, human brain does that all the time. it's an evolutionary adaptation that improved survivability in times when what you didn't know could easily kill you. the kid wouldn't know about jesus, but he would probably believe in an inteligent agency hiding in the unknown.
omgopet 3 months ago
@omgopet You could bring a kid up to believe and see the intelligent agency of Cthulu if you constantly insisted and indoctrinated them, maybe that "improved survivability" was a benefit for early human societies when we didn't have the technology for measuring and indicating the cause of most natural phenomena, but in modern day science there is little room for the god of the gaps anymore. That is an argument from ignorance.
pat5168 3 months ago
@pat5168 chtulu is a part of a religion of a sort. my point is that while you have to indoctrinate a kid with a particular theology, people in general are predisposed to asigning agency to the unknown.
of course it is completely unnecessary and even harmful today, we have gone a long way from roaming the savanna. i'm not arguing it's good, i was just correcting your statement which is false as demonstrated by sociological and neurological research.
most kids are theists even if not raised so.
omgopet 3 months ago
@omgopet That's disturbing, but I think it isn't that way anymore. I stopped being a Christian at 13 and most of the kids from my middle and highschool were too despite all of us being brought up as Christians.
pat5168 3 months ago
@pat5168 i was always an atheist with regards to the bible because i was never indoctrinated. but i was still afraid of unknown as a kid and wold personify my fear. it can be a monster in the closet or kid stealing gypsies that live around the block, but everyone has these kinds of associations as a kad. i bet you had them too.
the church gives those fears a name and a community instead of teaching kids to grow out of them. that's why you have grown, smart people believing ridiculous things.
omgopet 3 months ago
@omgopet Regarding personifying fears actually never frightened me. I even went to a salvation army camp one summer and did a bloody Mary thing in front of the bathroom mirror because I wasn't afraid even though the councilors were dead serious about me seeing a bloody reflection of Mary in the mirror. That's why I'm not afraid of hell or any other immature concept of punishments religious people can think up of. It's just wrong that indoctrination will abuse that in a kid though and prolong it.

@OglethorpeofPluto I don't tell people that. I'm more agnostic than I am Christian. I consider myself a Christian but i have a hard time knowing what to believe.
Zerachial 7 months ago
@Zerachial "most Atheists I come across yell at me and tell me how idiotic my choices are."
You must have been evangelizing at them because otherwise they wouldn't know about your choices. Stop playing the victim when you've provoked people to anger.
Valthepixie 7 months ago 2
@Valthepixie I don't believe in evangelism. I literally am a victim.
Zerachial 7 months ago
@Zerachial So how did these atheists know your choices to be telling you how idiotic they are. Telepathic are they.
Valthepixie 7 months ago
@Valthepixie They automatically assumed.

@Zerachial I don't believe you. Got to go with the side that doesn't tell so many lies.

I'm glad that After 35 years of being a Christian I finally started seeking the truth, because if I still believed after reading more of the bible then most Christians I would no longer be willing to Worship the god of the bible and so would live out my life knowing I was going to burn forever at the hands of an Evil tormentor who gets pleasure out of torturing others, And I am talking about God not Satan, heck if it were all true then who could blame Satan for rebelling. in Bible God is evil
robtay1963 7 months ago
@robtay1963 what true you are seeking and the after 35 years of you are being a Christian you realize demon belief of the atheist and you are one of them I'm feel sorry to you because you are in satan words
Hiro9390 7 months ago
@Hiro9390 I am in a world created by the fusion of matter and the evolution and natural selection, I believe in modern science and peer tested knowledge, it is people who believe in invisible God I feel sorry for. But before I learned the truth, I quit being christian because if you really read the bible you see that god is far more evil then Satan, thou neither REALLY exist. Lets say bible was all true, power does not make one worthy of worship, but how one welds that power and god was cruel.
robtay1963 7 months ago
@robtay1963 what is the main studying of science ? where it come from ?
Hiro9390 7 months ago
@Hiro9390 I don't personally study science, I have read several books on evolution from different authors and also on Cosmology( study of the starts). The books were written by people with money and technology to to test and retest each others information, and I just found it all way more credible then a book with so many stories that have no basis in real history. I have also read real books on Egyptology. But just reading the bible is enough to turn a Christian into an atheist.
robtay1963 7 months ago 2
@Hiro9390 Try reading the bible, I mean Samuel and joshua and the story of job, read them as a person who cares about children and kind people and don't only read the parts your pastor tells you to read, if after that you still want to worship him then you are very sick. If you read comments by atheists on here you will see that most know the bible better then most christians on here.....that is why we became atheist and found truth in science, it makes way more sense then 2000 year old book.
robtay1963 7 months ago
Maybe religion has helped human kind in some way, just like guns, but there comes a time when humans must realize we are advanced enough to put down the religion and the guns. Own up to the mistakes of humanity and ask questions on how to make it better.

Least that guy was a Sox fan. We're not angry, we are frustrated. We see so much illogic, and ill will and hatred all spawned from silly and illogical beliefs
Patriots09ist 7 months ago
I think atheist can't stand people being happy. despite all the yelling and frothing of the month, people still belive in their faith and are happy with their lives. Yes you have the fringe religious people but if an atheist thinks that represents the majority it just shows how blinded by hatred they are. Also assuming atheist are right that when we die it's oblivion..I ask..whats the point then...
ubermisogynist 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist Wow. You have made many claims about atheists that aren’t supported. Also, you misunderstand what atheism is. It is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the belief in an afterlife.
(cont.)
Periph1989 7 months ago
@Periph1989 The reason why ANYTHING is valuable is because it DOES NOT last forever. If the afterlife goes on forever, what is the point of this life since this life only lasts about 70 to 80 years? If this life is the only chance I’ll be able to have experiences, then it becomes MORE precious to me. Probably more precious than someone who believes they will live more than this life.
Periph1989 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist sorry for the many post. i just really felt like talking... I hope you read everything. thank you.
Periph1989 7 months ago
by definition atheists are angry because since they have seen the truth anyone would try to show it to others and they just can't see it. i have a good fucking reason to be mad BECAUSE I'M SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS!
paenitet7nullum 7 months ago
@paenitet7nullum Thats maybe so, but pissing people off won't convince them to see your pov and in some cases it could be hazardous to one's health..im agnostic and I don't care what other people want to personally belive..this country was founded on religious freedom then either deal with it or get the fuck out.
ubermisogynist 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist If it pisses you off that atheists expresses their thoughts, then I apologize, but we have a right to do so. I find it funny when you typed “it could be hazardous to one’s health” because that is one of the biggest problems with religion: the mere instance of someone who speaks against it may cause trouble for him/her.
(cont.)
Periph1989 7 months ago
@Periph1989 Freedom of religion also includes freedom to reject it. This country was also founded on freedom of speech… so you can deal with that or “get the fuck out”.
Btw, agnosticism/ agnosticism deal with knowledge, and atheism/theism deal with belief. The terms aren’t mutually exclusive.
Periph1989 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist i know that what u say might be the right thing to do, but i just can't do it man. when i see freedome i want it for other people.
paenitet7nullum 7 months ago
@paenitet7nullum the only way you atheist can get what you want is through genocide and totalitarianism..in that respect you guys wouldn't be any better than the religious people you hate.
ubermisogynist 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist well uummm plz explain. btw EMIN3M is the shit!!!
paenitet7nullum 7 months ago
@paenitet7nullum watch Adam Curtis's "All Watched by Machines of Loving Grace" it's about cybernetics but the overall theme is you can't control and tell people what to think and feel. This is what Atheist can't grasp. They need to just "deal with it".
ubermisogynist 7 months ago

@ubermisogynist ok...

@ubermisogynist thats ignorant jabber.. all most atheists want is to keep religion out of the govt, allow people to believe what they want "religion or not" as long as they keep it in their homes, stop allowing cults to indoctrinate children, and stop allowing religious followers to force their beleifs on others..i.e. stem cell, abortion, gays, athiests, cloning, etc. i dont care if you want to beleive in fairytales, just keep that crap away from me, and out of my govt.

flyinv1967 8 months ago
I have often wondered what the world would be like today if no one had ever believed in God, I think without the dark ages where true science and any thing that made the holy books of the day seem false was punishable by the death we would be exploring other planets by now. Imagine if people had been allowed to study real science without fear 1000 years ago. I mean look how far science has come in just 235 years of freedom.....
robtay1963 8 months ago 11
@robtay1963 You have a greatly exagerated view of America's place in the world. And you're completely deluded if you think we are free. There is a far greater percentage of our population in prison than any other country in the history of the world. And with right wing scum trying to privatize it its going to get a lot worse. As for the spread of knowledge I advise you to look up "printing press" on wikipedia. You find the answer there.
MasterOfSparks 8 months ago
@MasterOfSparks LOL true true, today all you say is true, I believe in freedom and laws against harming and stealing from others. I am not really speaking of today but of 236 years ago when this country was founded by men like Thomas Jefferson who warned Congress to be careful not to pass to many Laws based on individual beliefs or we will be come no better then the tyranny from which we have so recently escaped......Sadly if the right wing had there way true science will once again be Heresy.
robtay1963 8 months ago
@robtay1963 Actually, the church was the one that encouraged the scientific method, until it contradicted its beliefs. If the church never existed, there may not necessarily be an higher increase in scientific progress.
swisscheesepotatochi 8 months ago
@robtay1963 Your hatred for religion is weird..you do know alot of science started because they were trying to figure out God..Newton was religions..Islam had a lot of scientific discoveries... but to answer your question I don't think it would have mattered..your problem is that you don't ackonlowed that PEOPLE are evil..if it's not religion to as you say "hold back" it's someone who want power and control over others..you know it was Atheist that invented the nuclear bomb,,,just sayin,,,
ubermisogynist 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist Actually, science started because they were trying to figure out reality... religion started because they tried to explain what they didn't know about reality with a primitive concept. As our understanding of science grew, some religions changed so that their beliefs became more and more obscure, or they died out.
(cont.)
Periph1989 7 months ago
@Periph1989 It doesn't matter what the religious beliefs of famous scientists were because the important discoveries that they made have no ties with their religious beliefs. What scientific discoveries were made because of Islam?
Periph1989 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist I don’t understand how “Atheists inventing the nuclear bomb” is relevant. If it is true (I don’t know if it is or not), their invention has nothing to do with their atheism.
What I don’t understand is that if the attributes that believers believe about God are true, that means he made us with the knowledge that we are “evil” and that some of us were destined for hell. If he is all knowing and all powerful, how can he NOT be all responsible?
Periph1989 7 months ago
@ubermisogynist I don't hate religion, I hate a belief structure that in the past has caused governments to go to war and kill and slaughter in the name of any God. Or to torture innocent people into clamming they believe something on pain of death. No ones arguments matter. I no longer believe in any God, but if you could prove to me beyond a doubt that the God of the KJV was real I would not worship him because he is a petty, egotistical, maniac who forces worship with death threats.
robtay1963 7 months ago
@robtay1963 fact is people will always have different views, i don't think all atheist are evil because they inventive the most destructive weapon man has known. I think atheist and religions people both need to learn tolerance. The only way atheist can get what they want is to do what religious people used(and sometimes now) is to do genocide and install a totalitarian form of government..supress freedoms etc..then Atheist would be no better than the people they hate
ubermisogynist 7 months ago
@robtay1963 Nice one John Lennon. lol This is true though 1000% Everyone could work for a common goal but whatever, it's better if you get those ideas out of your head now, because shit is going to get wayyyy worse before these ignorant fucks wake up and realize they were the ones moving their own bodies all along.
Revolution2pointO 7 months ago
@Revolution2pointO What ticks me off is the fact that Christians push there agenda by saying how 80 percent of the population is christian, but that statement is bogus for two reasons first Atheist are treated with more contempt then Homosexuals so many won't admit even in a private survey that they don't believe, and Second because 700 years and more ago people were being tortured into believing and for fear of death taught their children who taught there children and so on:: Continued.....
robtay1963 7 months ago
@robtay1963 Continued::::: Which means that if centuries ago only a handful of the population believed and government forced it upon everyone then that would increase the number which would grow generation after generation. Christians want to remain blind to the holy wars, converting whole countries by force or the Inquisitions but without those events I bet the 80/20 would be flipped to 20/80....Sad to believe in a loving god who repeatedly kills innocents and forces belief with fear of fire.

why the atheist is against something that does not exist?
OtonielRochaSC 8 months ago
@OtonielRochaSC - Why is the atheist against something that does not exist? Because the theists are trying to legislate morality and enact laws in a country that's supposed to be a secular democracy, based on the holy book of a bigoted, frightened, ignorant mob of desert dwellers. That's why. If the religious would STOP trying to teach nonsense about nonexistent deities in public school science classes, and STOP trying to legislate what people do with their own bodies, you wouldn't hear a peep.
Andraste77 8 months ago
@OtonielRochaSC i really think atheists just want to bitch about things to make this life more of a challenge.us against them
flyinv1967 8 months ago

Could one of you Jesus nuts please explain something? Is it your claim that the creator is a sociopath who created billions of people to torture for all eternity for simply not believing something that really makes no sense? Or do you claim that he is INCAPABLE of saving people who don't believe some nonsense because your god is not as powerful as Satan? Which is it? Is your god completely psychotic or just incompetent?
MasterOfSparks 8 months ago
@MasterOfSparks God is like an indecisive child my son, trying desperately to decide whether to burn the ants in the ant mound with his magnifying glass or draw a pretty picture of them in crayon.
In the end he cannot make up his mind and so he drops trou' and pisses all over the ant mound (this is what causes rising sea levels btw) thus satisfying himself. Here's a bible quote which sums it up;
see a broad to get dat booty yak 'em
eg 'er down a smack 'em yak 'em!

lancecryor 8 months ago
@lancecryor No sorry lance. You being an idiot then calling me one ain't gonna cut it. Either answer the question (which you obviously can't) or stfu (which apparently you can't do either). But calling me an idiot without being able to answer the question only makes YOU look stupid. Did I say "look"? Identifies you as stupid is more precise.
MasterOfSparks 8 months ago
@MasterOfSparks lol asking a dumb question like "Is God psychopath or incompetent?" and then expecting an intelligent answer makes you sound dumber than you are and also proves that you just want to argue. Grow up. You're lucky you got an answer at all with that dumb garbage. Nothing you say can be taken seriously, and so YOU can't be taken serious. For dumb questions you get dumb answers.
lancecryor 8 months ago
@lancecryor Its a very sensible question. The Christian version of god is the worst demon in all of literature. He wipes out entire civilizations on a whim, tells parents to murder their children, and wants everyone who refuses to believe some idiocy to burn in eternal flames. He's vile, disgusting, and stupid. That's one option. The alertnative is that he doesn't have a choice in his behavior because he's being controlled himself. Which is it? Why do you worship a demon?
